Oman often feels like the forgotten country of the Middle East. Located at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman stays out of the major political tension and drama that dominates the region. This may be why Oman has been frequently dubbed the “Switzerland of the Middle East”.

But Oman’s low profile is exactly what makes it so extraordinary. There is a stillness here that is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever visited. From It’s 2,000 miles (3,165 kilometers) of wild coastline to breathtaking mountains and hidden wadis, Oman is truly one of a kind. The locals are also incredibly kind and hospitable people. They go out of their way to make their country feel like home during your stay.

In my Oman travel guide, I’ve included the top places in Oman to explore, personalized travel recommendations, cultural insights, and the most essential tips for planning your journey to this unforgettable and timeless country. I’ll share the top things to do in Oman and advice that will ensure your trip is smooth and enjoyable.

Oman is unforgettable, once you visit you’ll understand why.

Reasons to Visit the Sultanate of Oman

One of the top reasons to visit Oman is to experience the authenticity and richness of the Arab culture. While many of Oman’s Gulf neighbors have lost a piece of themselves through rapid development and flashy skylines, Oman has retained its local atmosphere and culture while modernizing into a developed nation with the worlds second strongest currency. Interestingly, buildings in Oman cannot be built taller than five stories. This has surely contributed to the country’s harmony with It’s natural surroundings and the ongoing respect for preserving local Omani customs.

Another reason Oman is one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited is because of the countrys dramatic scenery and breathtaking nature. From the serene stillness of Jebel Shams at sunrise to the wild, mysterious camel filled shores of Salalah, Oman’s connection to the natural elements makes it a soulful place to explore. Traveling to Oman will leave you inspired.

Experience the timeless beauty and serene landscapes of Oman, a country where tradition coexists with modernity. From the tops of towering mountain cliffs to pristine camel filled beaches, discover why Oman is unlike anywhere else in the Middle East.

When to Visit Oman

The best time to visit Oman is October through April. Summertime in Oman, like the rest of the Arabian Peninsula, gets brutal and the humidity swelters at the coast.

Another great time to visit Oman is during the Dhofar region’s Khareef season. This is Salalah’s monsoon season. The entire coastline of Southern Oman is blanketed in a thick mysterious mist and the mountains are green and filled with vegetation. However, the thousands of wild camels that usually roam free are contained to keep them from drifting on the roads.

Visiting Oman during Ramadan and Eid

I visited Oman during the end of Ramadan and during the Eid days, the most important Islamic holiday in the country. During Eid al-Fitr, many restaurants and shops are closed. When I went to Nizwa, most of the souq was shut. However, the places most commonly visited by travelers remain open along with the hotels. Unlike the majority of Islamic countries, Oman celebrates four instead of three days of Eid.

You will see many Omanis dressed in their best traditional clothing and taking pictures everywhere. There are many social and cultural events that occur during Eid as well.

I visited towards the end of the month long Ramadan fast. During the day, many businesses remain closed. Avoid eating or drinking in public, as many Omanis fast from sunrise to sundown.

Getting In | Muscat international Airport

Most people arrive in Oman at the Muscat International Airport. Muscat’s Airport is a modern yet understated Middle Eastern airport, reflecting the country’s calm nature. Unlike the other Gulf nations, the Muscat airport feels peaceful. My favorite part of the airport is the large date palms that line the terminals. Once you arrive, you will go through immigration and customs before bing allowed in the Sultanate.

It’s also possible to arrive by a land border via Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates. If you are renting a car, make sure they allow you to cross the border into Oman.

Moving around in Oman

Getting around Oman is easy, but it does require a bit of planning. The country is large and spread out, with public transportation being limited outside major cities.

Renting a car is the best way to explore Oman. Roads are in excellent condition and most signs are written in both English and Arabic. Driving here is much more orderly than other Middle Eastern countries. In fact, Oman is one of the easiest places I’ve ever driven. A 4WD may be easier if you plan to discover many of Oman’s mountains, wadis, and hidden beaches and is required to Visit the Jebel Akhdar mountains.

Just watch out for speed camera towers along the major highways. They are common and will automatically capture a picture of your car and charge you a speeding fine.

Taxis and rideshares are another great way to get around Oman’s cities. Currently, Uber isn’t operating in Oman. Otaxi and Tasleem are the main rideshare apps. Interestingly, only natural born Omanis are permitted to work as taxi drivers in Oman.

If you plan to visit the Dhofar province in southern Oman, I’d recommend flying from Muscat to Salalah. The flight is less than an hour, very affordable, and is a great way to see the country from an aerial view.

Visas in Oman

Many nationalities often get visas for arrival in Oman. Currently, the US, UK, EU and GCC countries get a visa on arrival, usually for 30 days which can be extended once inside the country.

For peace of mind, you can request a tourist visa to Oman through the Royal Oman Police ahead of your arrival to the country.

Sim Cards in Oman

I highly recommend getting a SIM card when traveling to Oman. This was a game changer since it made staying connected and navigating Oman way easier. You will be able to use your phone throughout the entire country, even in the mountainous and remote areas.

You can pick up a SIM card after going through customs at Muscat and Salalah airports. The actual card itself costs around $3. Plans range from $5-$25 depending on how much data you need. I was able to reload my SIM card when I needed more data.

There are a few SIM card companies. I went with Ooredoo Oman and I would recommend them. I picked up my SIM card at the Muscat airport. Their kiosk is right outside customs in the Muscat airport before the exit. You can also download their app before arriving to Oman.

Currency in oman

The currency in Oman is called the Omani Rial. It is one of the strongest currencies in the Middle East. 1 OMR ~ 1 USD. Coins are less common. Aesthetically, the Omani Rial is one of the most beautiful currencies in my opinion. ATMs can be found throughout the country.

Most places in larger cities like Muscat, Salalah, and Sohar accept credit cards, mainly Visa and Mastercard. I would recommend having some cash on hand for smaller stores and locations that are off the beaten path.

Note: Be cautious about getting Omani currency in the United States before your trip. My bank gave me a mix of some outdated Omani bills. When I arrived in Oman, all of the shops and restaurants would not accept the currency that was outdated. They told me I would have to go to a national bank of Oman branch for them to exchange the outdated bills with the current currency. It may be better to exchange currency once you arrive in Oman. You can usually do this at the airport.

Sultanate of Oman Guide | Best experiences and places to visit

Here are a few of the incredible locations to explore and top experiences I had during my first journey through the Sultanate of Oman.

Explore the Coastal Capital of Muscat

Muscat is unlike the other capitals of the Gulf countries in the Arabian Peninsula. While cities like Dubai, Doha, and Riyadh are known for their shiny towers and soaring skyscrapers, Muscat retains a more traditional, residential feel. This has allowed Muscat to preserve more of its local culture in a way that other cities in the region simply have not. Both men and women wear traditional clothing and the atmosphere is much more authentic. In fact, buildings in Muscat cannot exceed 5 stories. Geographically, Muscat is long and linear, unfolding along the Gulf of Oman’s endless shorelines and the jagged slopes of the Al Hajar Mountains.

There are many places to explore in Muscat. The Mutrah Corniche is a relaxing seaside promenade that is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Nearby is the Mutrah Souq, a maze of colorful shops selling antiques and Omani speciality items. Additionally, there are many traditional forts in the area to visit. You can also go swimming in the warm water of the Arabian Sea at Qurum or Seeb Beaches. The Mall of Oman is noticeably more relaxed than malls in Dubai, making it an ideal place to cool off and escape the heat. It’s also home to Amouage, Oman’s most famous oud perfumery.

One thing to note is that the neighborhoods of Muscat are spread out and sprawling. Public transportation is limited, so it’s easiest to move around by renting a car or taxi.

I highly recommend treating yourself to a stay at one of Muscat’s five star resorts. There is no shortage of stunning luxury hotels in the city. Many are built right on the beach, lining the shore with tall, lush date palms. Usually, there are several restaurants at larger properties so you don’t even need to leave the resort. Other common amenities include spas, full gyms, and recreational activities like tennis and jet skiing.

I stayed at Jumeirah Muscat Bay, one of the top hotels in the city. Located just outside the city center of Muscat, Jumeirah is tucked away in a hidden beach cove. Every morning I was awakened by the song of local Omani birds and walked along the coastline at sunrise. The setting of the property is incredibly scenic and relaxing. The interior of the hotel is serene and beautifully detailed with traditional architecture and Arabian style arches.

Just two hours from the coastal capital of Muscat lies the historic city of Nizwa. Nestled at the foot of the arid Hajar Mountains, Nizwa has a traditional and timeless feel. Best known for the expansive Nizwa Fort, the city also has a bustling souk, one of the best places to search for local Omani products and souvenirs. Here you can find khanjar daggers, traditionally worn by Omani men on special occasions. I purchased a traditional stick called an asa made with wood from local trees and adorned with silver engravings. Additionally, traditional Omani clothing is cheaper in Nizwa. The best deals are located in the shops below the Nizwa Mosque.

The streets of Nizwa come alive at night, with coffee shops bustling late into the evening. On Fridays, there’s a weekly goat market that is lively to spectate.
Known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia, Jebel Shams is one of the best places to experience the peace and breathtaking beauty of Oman’s mountains. Translated from Arabic as the “Mountain of the Sun”, Jebel Shams is Oman’s highest point. The Wadi Nakhr gorge that runs through Jebel Shams is 3,280 feet deep (1000 meters).

There are many trails in Jebel Shams. The most famous is called the Balcony Walk officially known as the W6 trail. One of my favorite things about Jebel Shams is that there are many places to spread out and enjoy the panoramic views during sunrise and sunset in peace.

You can camp on the rim of the canyon and there’s also several hotels and guest houses in Jebel Shams. You don’t need a 4WD to visit Jebel Shams, but it can make the drive easier since sections of the road up are unpaved and pretty steep.

The mountains of Jebel Akhdar are one of the most enchanting places in the Middle East. Located high in the Al Hajar mountain range, Jebel Akhdar is known in Arabic as the “green mountains”. It gets its name from the surprising vegetation that sprawls over the mountains and surrounding valleys. The region is dotted with dense rose gardens, pomegranate orchards, and produce farms, all connected by an ancient irrigation system. There’s also several mud brick villages that cling to the mountains of Jebel Akhdar. Some are empty while others are sparsely inhabited.

I visited Jebel Akhdar during the Rose season when the mountains and terrace farms of Jebel Akhdar are filled with pink, fragrant, Damask roses. The Damask rose season in Jebel Akhdar typically runs from March to late April. Jebel Akhdar is actually famous for its rose water, which is made from the flowers using an ancient technique.

Staying at the Suwgra is incredibly rejuvenating. Breathing in the fresh mountain air and hiking the many trails above the village is a deeply grounding way to experience Oman’s nature. The family prepars traditional Omani meals with fresh, local ingredients. I got to see the cooking of the shuwa, a local Omani dish prepared on special occasions and holidays.

One of my favorite memories of staying at the Suwgra was when they transported all my luggage by zip line across the canyon ravine.

By far one of my favorite experiences in Oman was getting to watch a traditional Omani bull fight. Before visiting Oman, I was unaware that bull fighting has been a local tradition for hundreds of years. Unlike Spanish bullfighting however, no harm is meant for the bulls and there’s also no matador.

The Omani bull fights are local and intimate. I was the only westerner in attendance and I didn’t see any women. If you plan to visit, I highly recommend wearing traditional clothing. If you’re a man, wear a dishdasha, the Omani version of a thobe. Women should probably cover their heads, considering this is a local event. The Omani bull fights aren’t well advertised, but I was able to get in touch with the local event coordinators who invited me to the event.

My favorite part of Oman is Salalah. Located in Oman’s southern Dhofar region, the coasts of Salalah are lined with thousands of wild palm trees. Dense tropical plantations growing papaya and bananas stand feet away from the sea, and the roads are lined with fresh fruit and juice stands. You can even drive your car on the beaches here.

However, my favorite part of Salalah is the thousands of wild camels that roam the hills and beaches of this tropical Middle Eastern city. They are literally everywhere, and camel warning signs line the highway.

Oman is a country filled with many large and grand mosques. The soaring minarets and expansive domes can be seen towering above highways and at the centers of Oman’s most important cities.

One thing that I admire about the mosques of Oman is that a majority are built out of local materials. Many use minimalistic, whitewashed walls made of stone or clay. Many also have expansive courtyards and gardens, emphasizing the importance of community.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat is Oman’s most famous mosque. Completed in 2001, it blends traditional Omani architecture and contemporary Islamic design. Another one of my favorite mosques in Muscat is the Al Zulfa Mosque in Al Seeb. With more than 20 green domes, the mosque looks like something straight out of Aladdin. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Sohar is also truly breathtaking, combining Iranian and Central Asian influences. The tile work on this mosque is especially beautiful. It’s truly magical to visit at night, when the grounds are still and serene.

Tourists should not visit mosques during the five daily designated Islamic prayer times.

Eat at Traditional Omani Restaurants

Another one of my favorite things about Oman is the food. Omani cuisine is very tasty and flavorful.

The best places to eat in Oman are traditional and local restaurants. If the sign is written in Arabic, you’re probably in the right area. I like the type of places where they put a plastic placement down and serve your food on large metal plates. Some restaurants, like Rozna in Muscat, are even built like the Omani forts found throughout the country.

These aren’t just places to eat, they are windows into the country’s rich heritage, hospitality, and flavors. Along with standard wooden tables, many restaurants have areas with low seating that consists of colorful rugs and cushions. A majority of local restaurants also have private family seating so women can take off their hijabs to eat more comfortably.

One of the best foods I tried in Oman was camel skewers. The meat was very tender and tasty. Oman also has excellent restaurants from other Middle Eastern cuisines like Kuwaiti, Saudi, and Lebanese.

shop for Omani Frankincense and Bakhoor

One of the top things to buy in Oman is frankincense. Resembling small white pebbles, frankincense is produced in Oman’s southern Dhofar region in Salalah. It is harvested from the local Boswellia Sacra trees. When burned, a clean and resinous smell is released. It is used to welcome guests and during religious ceremonies. Historically, omani frankincense traveled across the ancient world on trade routes out of Arabia. Frankincense is also sometimes called Lubán.

Another famous incense in Oman and the entire gulf region is bakhoor. Usually made in the form of a woodchip, bakhoor is coated with various scented oud oils that when burned exude a rich, strong sent. All the countries in the Arabian peninsula have cultural ties to the burning of bakhoor during social occasions.

Discover Oman’s authentic mountain heritage and timeless hospitality at the Suwgra, nestled high in Jebel Akhdar -Old Soul Explorer

Note: This blog and review of the Suwgra is not sponsored and is completely based on my own experience.

Tucked in the Rose Scented Fold of the Jebel Akhdar Mountains

High above the coastal shores of Muscat rise the soaring peaks of Jebel Akhdar. Known as the “Green Mountains”, the highlands of Jebel Akhdar isn’t very green at all for the most part. The most beautiful time of year to visit Jebel Akhdar is during the Damask Rose bloom, where 3 ancient villages connected by cliff hugging stone paths are covered in pink, fragrant flowers.

Tucked high in the rose scented fold of the Jebel Akhdar mountains lies one of Oman’s most authentic places to stay. The Suwgra is built into the side of a cliff and is a 500 year old mountain village turned bed and breakfast. All of the traditional elements in the Suwgra have been retained while adding modern comforts like private bathrooms with warm water and internet. When visiting Oman, the Suwgra is one hotel you simply can’t miss. Reasonably priced, it provides a glimpse into traditional Omani living and will be a stay like no other. The Suwgra isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an experience.

What is the Suwgra

Nestled deep in Oman’s Al Hajar mountain range, the Suwgra is Jebel Akhdar’s oldest cliffside village. Nearly 500 years old, the Suwgra was named for the once abundant “Suwgra” trees that were used to build homes and sturdy ceilings. The original inhabitants of the Suwgra carved their homes into limestone terraces and used olive, walnut, and juniper wood for additional construction and decorative elements.

Oman underwent rapid development beginning in the 1970s. The development continued into the early 2000s, with a gravel road being built just short of the Suwgra in 2004 for the first time.

By 2014, most of the Al Sheriqi family, descendants of the village’s original residents, had relocated to newer homes down the road seeking modern utilities and convenience. The family began to restore the mountainside village in 2015, using local clay and timber, while preserving and honoring traditional Omani architecture. Intricate wood carvings, some centuries old, still adorn the doors and ceilings

Today, the Suwgra has emerged as a beacon of sustainable tourism, including 11 rooms, each with their own private bathroom and terrace. While the accommodations are simple and clean, they remain true to the spirit of this storied Omani village. At the heart of the village is Anat Cafe, a small coffee shop with stunning views of the entire village. There are also multiple activities to either find peace and solitude in the mountains or pursue adventures in Jebel Akhdar.

The Traditional Omani Experience | Cultural Immersion in the Al Hajar Mountains

The Suwgra isn’t just a hotel, it’s a fully immersive encounter with the heritage and spirit of Oman’s Al Hajar mountains. While maintaining a serene air of mountain minimalism, every detail feels deeply intentional. From vibrant red rugs to intricate wood carvings on thick earth toned walls, staying here will transport you to another time. You’ll wake to the call to prayer echoing through the canyon, recited by one of the younger family members who still live and work in the village. The cooler mountain air offers a welcome relief from the unrelenting heat of the Arabian Peninsula.

Still run by the same family that nourished the Suwgra trees, this bed and breakfast retains tradition and comfort in the same breath.

My Experience at the Suwgra

From the second I arrived at the Suwgra, I was greeted with the warmth of Omani hospitality. Locals greeted me and took my luggage. A minute later, my suitcase and Louis Vuitton duffle were flying across the canyon on a zipline, the only way to transport luggage to the hotel.

I descended a steep stone staircase which offered remarkable views of the Suwgra, carved into the mountainside, like something out of a novel or a dream. I walked through the garden where pomegranates, grapes, and olives grow in abundance. It’s important to note that trespassing in the garden without permission and guidance is not allowed.

In winter, a wooden bridge is the only safe way to cross as the river rages with fresh mountain water.

When I ascended the last of the stone steps, I was received with fragrant Omani coffee with cardamom and dates. My room was simple yet rich in traditional charm, everything I needed for my stay in the Jebel Akhdar mountains. It had a beautifully carved door, Arabian rugs, and arched windows. I had a private bathroom which was very clean and had hot water. I also had a private terrace with a porch swing on it. There are multiple room types, from simple dwellings like mine to more spacious suites.

I spent lots of time at Anat cafe, enjoying the peaceful energy of this cliffside coffee shop.

Road to the Suwgra

Be advised the road to The Suwgra is unpaved and extremely steep in sections.

A 4WD vehicle is required to access the village. In fact, there is a local police checkpoint at the base of the mountain and you will not be allowed to pass unless you driving a 4WD. All other vehicles are turned away.

Anat Coffee

Perched just above the entrance to The Suwgra, Anat Cafe offers a serene, grounded spot to sip espresso and take in panoramic views of the mountain village and surrounding canyon.

Even if you aren’t staying overnight, visitors are welcome to stop by Anat and order a drink. Just like the rest of the village, Anat features local wood accents and earthen tones. It’s simple, rustic, and tasteful. The coffee was excellent.

Meals at the Suwgra

Breakfast and dinner are included as part of the stay. Breakfast consisted of shakshuka, Omani pancakes, afoul medames (stewed fava beans) along with fresh juice.

Dinner featured grilled meats, spiced rice, traditional Omani bread, and seasonal vegetables. Before the meal, all guests gather together in a communal space to hear stories about the history of the Suwgra.

Lunch isn’t typically included but can be arranged upon request.

Activities at the Suwgra

There’s no shortage of things to do at the Suwgra. Whether you’re seeking stillness and solitude in the mountains or a more adventurous experience in Jebel Akhdar, the Suwgra offers a rich variety of activities.

Three Villages Walk | Exploring Jebel Akhdar’s Ancient Settlements

One of the highlights of my stay was the Jebel Akhdar Three Villages Walk. Led by a guide from the Suwgra, the Three Village Walk includes stops at all three of Jebel Akhdar’s biggest historical settlements. The route winds past terraced farms with panoramic views of Jebel Akhdar and closely follows the ancient falaj irrigation channels.

While Al Aqr and Al Ayn remain partially inhabited, Al Shirayjah is now mostly comprised of renovated Airbnbs. Many families who once lived in traditional stone dwellings have since resettled in the nearby ‘modern village’ just above the road, with quicker access to modern amenities.

The Damask Rose Season in Jebel Akhdar

One of the reasons I decided to visit Oman in early April was to experience the damask rose season of Jebel Akhdar. Typically, the roses of Jebel Akhdar bloom from March to mid-April each year. The traditional villages and terraced farms are covered in pink and pungent damask roses. It’s a beautiful springtime activity.

My guide from the Suwgra, Mohamed, explained the cultural importance of damask roses in producing traditional Omani rosewater. I even got to help pick roses and learn the traditional process of distilling rosewater.

// For more information on the rose season in Jebel Akhdar, check out my guide (COMING SOON)

The Making of Shuwa | A Traditional Omani Experience

If you are lucky enough as I was, you’ll have the rare chance to watch the cooking of the Shuwa. Literally translated from “grilled” or “roasted” in Arabic, Shuwa is marinated meat (often goat of lamb) slow cooked underground for up to two days.

Marinated with garlic and Omani spices and wrapped in banana or palm leaves, the Shuwa is the true definition of a slow burn. The meat and leaves are often placed in a sack made of palm fiber or cloth.

I had the privilege to watch the cooking of the Shuwa during Eid Al-Fitr during the end of Ramadan. Shuwa is a tedious process and usually prepared during holidays or weddings. It’s a symbol of pride for Omani heritage and culture. It was one of those moments that made staying at the Suwgra feel truly immersive.

There are several trails around the Suwgra that are worth exploring.

Hike to the Top of the Mountain

One of the shortest and most stunning is the path that leads directly above the cliffside village. Ascending upwards on a series of steep granite stairs leads to the top of the mountain. Along the way, I passed by herds of mountain goats and suwgra trees. At the top of the summit, there was an incredible panoramic view of Jebel Akhdar.

I sat under a large tree and admired the incredibly serene and stunning views of Oman’s Al Hajar mountains. It was the perfect place to pause and breathe in the fresh mountain air, a moment of tranquility and appreciation for my first visit to Oman. The hike from the Suwgra to the top of the mountain takes about an hour. It’s an easy hike but be careful for uneven rocks and slippery steps.

For a more off the beaten path experience you can hike to Al Wakan, a traditional mountain village with terrace farms and large date trees. Al Wakan truly feels like a desert oasis, less traveled than other villages in Jebel Akhdar.

Previously used as a path for donkeys, the hike to Al Wakan is rocky and uneven at parts. It’s an all day hike, around 10 hours in total. If you decide to do the hike, start early, bring lots of food and water, and wear sturdy hiking shoes.

Hike to Al Masdara

Known as the Hidden Lakes Trail, the path to Al Masdara is one of the most adventurous hikes in Jebel Akhdar. This 3.7 mile (6km) hike takes you through lush wadis, cascading waterfalls, and past secluded freshwater pools. It’s approximately 4 hours round trip from the Suwgra.

In my Amman guide, I have included my personal travel tips and recommendations for exploring the city’s Roman ruins, hidden cafes, and hilltop views of Jordan’s exciting capital – Old Soul Explorer

It was around a 30 minute uphill walk from Jabal Al-Weibdeh to the top of the ancient citadel. On that steep hilltop are remains of Roman ruins, Byzantine walls, and the old Umayyad palace. Sunset drenched the arid and sprawling capital in a thousand hues of pink, purple, and gold. The call to prayer drifted through the valley as schools of birds danced in the sky. Across the way, the Roman Theater glistened in evening orange lights. This is Amman, the capital and ancient heart of Jordan.

Amman is incredibly old and is one of the most surprising cities I’ve visited in the region. An endless sea of earth tone apartments intermix with ancient ruins throughout the densely-packed hills of a city as old as civilization itself. It has a surprising creative side too, a hidden jewel of the Middle East.

In my travel guide to Amman, I share the best places to eat, shop, and explore during your time in this remarkable and storied city built on seven hills. I have also included my Google Map which you can download for your trip to Amman.

What I love most about Amman is the strong sense of both history and authenticity that prevails everywhere you go. Ancient ruins sit side by side with bustling markets and neighborhood cafés, giving the city an energy that feels both timeless and alive. Whether you’re wandering the old souks Downtown, sipping tea on Rainbow Street, or standing at the Citadel overlooking layers of history, you’re constantly reminded that Amman’s past and present are deeply connected.

A Brief History of Amman

Founding by the Ammonites

While evidence suggests Amman was inhabited since Neolithic times, the current city began to take root and grow under the Ammonite civilization. The Ammonites were a Semitic people mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. They congregated around the hills of Amman naming their city Rabbath Ammon. Due to its strategic location, Amman was known early on as a meeting point for neighboring civilizations and cultures.

Greco-Roman Rule and Islamic Conquest

After the conquests of Alexander the Great, the city was renamed Philadelphia by Ptolemy II of Egypt. Under Roman rule, Amman continued to grow, becoming a member of the Decapolis, the “cities of 10” with strong political, commercial, and cultural ties to Rome. Like so many of the other cities in the Levant, Amman flourished and expanded rapidly during Roman rule. The Byzantine period came with the spread of Christianity and the construction of many churches.

The city was conquered by the Islamic armies in 635 A.D., just 3 years after the Prophet Muhammad’s death. Much of the history of Amman is rather obscure during the subsequent years, but records indicate the significance of the city declined. By the time the Ottomans took control of the “Transjordan”, Amman was just a small town.

Modern Resurgence

Amman began to see a revival in its importance during the 19th century. This was attributed to the building of the Amman railway connecting Istanbul to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, along with the resettlement of Muslim Circassians fleeing Russian persecution. Many of these refugees settled in Amman creating a need for new zoning and administration. New businesses were opened and the city saw an economic revitalization.

Rapid growth and development continued into the 20th century during the creation of the Kingdom of Jordan. The city has emerged as an economic, political, and cultural center in the Middle East. It also has a growing arts scene. Following the footsteps of the Circassians, many Palestinian and Iraqi refugees have sought safety in Amman, contributing to the city’s diversity.

Best Time to Visit Amman

The best time to visit Amman (and the rest of Jordan) is from March through May and September through November. Visiting Amman will be more enjoyable as the weather is warm but manageable. The summertime in Jordan is intense with soaring temperatures. Additionally, Jordan also has a rainy season in the winter, bringing desert thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Transportation in Amman

There are several ways to get around the city. Unfortunately, Amman does not have extensive public transportation options or a metro system. The government has plans to establish a modern metro lightrail, so hopefully when I return to Amman I will be able to see the finished project in action.

The Queen Alia International Airport is about 20 miles (30 km) south of Amman, so plan for a 30–45 minute drive into the city center.

Taxis

One of the best ways to get around Amman is by taxi. Taxis are an essential part of getting around in Jordan, but some drivers try to scam tourists, especially the yellow taxis. These taxis often linger near major tourist sights and many drivers aggressively approach foreigners asking if they need a ride. I don’t recommend using these taxis as they often overcharge both tourists and locals alike.

The best way to find a reliable taxi is through a designated taxi agency. Many agencies have cars waiting at the Amman airport. If you’re happy with your driver’s service, ask for their WhatsApp number so you can arrange rides directly with them throughout your stay. If you haven’t agreed on a fare beforehand, always make sure the driver turns on the meter at the start of the ride.

Rideshare Apps

A good alternative to taxis is using rideshare apps. The most common options in Jordan are Uber and Careem. You can easily request a ride on the app or schedule rides in advance. It’s also possible to book longer trips from Amman to places like Petra or Wadi Rum. Rideshare apps are often a safer and more predictable option, with fares agreed upfront and less risk of being overcharged.

Walking

The best way to get around Amman is on foot. In my opinion, this is the best way to discover what Amman is really all about. I found hidden art galleries, cozy coffee shops with skyline views, and fascinating street murals only by walking. As I wandered, I began to discover the city’s personality and character, as I heard children playing, mothers reprimanding their kids, and old radios giving the score of a soccer game or sharing global events in a muffled Arabic. Many of the important sights are within walking distance of each other.

Be prepared though, many of my walks were incredibly steep. Amman is a city built over seven hills. In my experience, climbing them by day and night only added to the adventure and memories of the city.

Buses

Amman does have a public bus system, including regular city buses and the newer Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. The buses are modern, air-conditioned, and very affordable. However, bus routes and schedules can be confusing for travelers and stops are not always clearly marked.

The BRT is more reliable, with dedicated lanes and frequent departures connecting key parts of the city. If you’re up for a local experience and don’t mind a bit of unpredictability, riding the bus can be an interesting and budget friendly way to see Amman.

A Note About Driving in Amman

Driving in Amman is complete chaos. A swarm of cars cutting each other off at the last minute and an unending sound of car horns make driving in Amman a total nightmare. I considered driving in Amman but every travel source I came across advised against it. I highly discourage driving in Amman unless you are familiar with these types of disorganized driving conditions.

If you plan on driving in Jordan and doing a road trip to Petra and Wadi Rum in the South, I strongly recommend picking up your rental car after you leave Amman. I got my rental car at the airport which made for an easy return when leaving the country.

Jabal Al-Weibdeh

Known as a more bohemian and artsy neighborhood, Jabal Al-Weibdheh has a unique creative energy. Vibrant street murals cover its walls, and trendy coffee shops and art galleries line the hills. It’s within walking distance of the Amman Citadel, the Roman Theater, and the lively streets of Downtown.

Downtown Amman (Al- Balad)

This is Amman’s historic and social core. Both of Amman’s most famous landmarks, the Roman citadel and Roman Theater are located in Downtown Amman. Large boulevards connect antique markets, lively souqs, oud shops, and shawarma stalls. The energy in Downtown Amman is electric. This is where you can buy unique clothes and priceless souvenirs to remember your trip to the Middle East. It also has some world famous street food where even the royal family of Jordan eats.

The Roman Citadel of Amman

Perched on the highest hill in the center of the city, the Roman Citadel feels like the crown of Amman. Continuously inhabited since the Bronze Age, it’s home to ancient ruins like the Temple of Hercules, the domed Umayyad Palace, and the remains of a Byzantine church. It also includes a small museum that houses artifacts and statues found near the acropolis. When I visited the citadel, I couldn’t help but feel that this is the place that bridges the history of Amman with the current aspirations of the city.

The elevated position of the citadel offers the most incredible 360-degree panoramic views of the city. Ancient ruins, modern apartments, and slender minarets adorn the rugged and arid hills of the capital. The Roman Citadel of Amman is most mesmerizing at sunset, when the sky is painted a million colors and the call to pray drifts through the valley.

I walked to the top of the Roman Citadel from my Airbnb in Jabal Al Weibdeh. Hiking to the top of the citadel was a great way to discover the city’s hidden gems by foot.

You’ll need a ticket to enter the Roman Citadel. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the entrance. Admission is included for those who purchased the Jordan Pass.

//Note: The Jordan Pass covers your tourist entry visa fee and gives you access to over 40 attractions across Jordan, including Petra, Jerash, and Wadi Rum.

The Roman Theater

Carved into the hillside across from the citadel, the Roman Theater is one of Amman’s most impressive ancient landmarks. Built in the 2nd century AD, this steep stadium was once among the largest in the Roman Empire, with space for 6,000 spectators. It’s incredible to stand here and marvel at the engineering it took to carve an arena of this scale into the side of the hill.

Today, the theater is surrounded by modern apartments, another reminder of how history is woven into daily life in Amman. Near the entrance, you’ll also find a well preserved Roman road and a smaller amphitheater.

The plaza in front of the Roman Theater is lively at all hours, with Jordanian families gathering and kids playing casual soccer matches. It’s a great spot to catch a glimpse of the simple joys of daily life in the capital. Opening and closing times vary throughout the year, and the Roman Theater usually closes earlier than the citadel. To enter, you’ll need to purchase a ticket or show your Jordan Pass.

Discover Downtown Amman

Downtown Amman, or Al-Balad, is the city’s bustling heart. It’s full of old souqs, tiny shops, and streets that hum with the chaotic, beautiful rhythm of Jordan’s capital. Here you’ll find spice stalls, gold markets, antique shops, historic mosques, and classic cafés all side by side. It’s the best spot to see Amman as it really is; old, chaotic, and full of surprises.

In Downtown Amman, you will find old coins, brass keepsakes, and mouthwatering street food you will remember for a lifetime.

Amman’s Souqs

Amman’s Downtown souqs are the real draw of Al-Balad. You’ll find endless stalls selling everything from fresh produce and herbs to gold jewelry and cheap clothes.

Souq Al-Sukar is known for its fruit and vegetables, while Souq Jara (open on Fridays in summer) has local crafts and antiques. Wandering through these markets is the best way to see how the city trades, shops, and socializes.

Even the King and Queen of Jordan eat here!

Rainbow Street

A short walk uphill from downtown, Rainbow Street is where old Amman meets its modern café culture. Lined with colorful houses, small boutiques, rooftop spots, and casual restaurants, it’s a nice place to stroll in the evenings. On weekends, it’s full of students, families, and travelers stopping for ice cream, coffee, or a quick snack with a view.

Amman Traveler Tips

Two days was more than enough time for me to explore Amman’s highlights and find my own favorite hidden corners of the city. I also used it as a base to explore Jerash and then the Jordan Valley (the Jordan River, Dead Sea, and Mt. Nebo).

I recommend trying to visit Amman first on your visit to Jordan. It’s a great first introduction to this small but incredibly special Middl Eastern nation. It’s a good place to begin your adventure before heading south to the ancient city of Petra and the vast orange desert sands of Wadi Rum.

Rainbow Street has cozy youth hostels, perfect for swapping stories on rooftop terraces that overlook the city.

Eating in Amman is an invitation to slow down and enjoy. Platters of mezze, warm bread, and grilled meats bring people together around noisy tables and fragrant streets. Jordanian cuisine is all about simple, generous flavors: earthy mansaf, smoky kebabs, fresh herbs, and mouthwatering hummus made to be scooped by hand. Every bite carries the warmth of hospitality that defines Jordan itself.

Safety in Amman

Amman is generally safe, with low crime rates and friendly locals. However, petty theft can occur in crowded areas like Downtown, so stay vigilant. Protests do occur, especially over regional issues like Palestine, so stay aware of the news and avoid large gatherings. Overall, solo travelers and groups will find the city welcoming with normal precautions.

Bargaining is part of the fun while shopping in Amman’s souqs. Expect to haggle for souvenirs, spices, or a good shawarma deal at a street stall. Vendors will appreciate humor and patience. Fixed prices are more common in malls and big restaurants.

Cash is King | Have Some Local Currency on Hand

In Amman, cash still rules daily life. Many small shops, taxis, and street food stalls prefer Jordanian dinars over cards. ATMs are easy to find, but carry small bills for tips, snacks, and purchases at small storefronts. A bit of cash makes everything smoother, especially Downtown.

Day Trips from Amman

Jerash

Visiting Jerash will transport you back to an era long before the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was even imagined. The Greek and Roman ruins here are some of the best preserved not only in the Middle East but in the entire world. This vast archaeological site is filled with ancient columns, temples, plazas, theaters, and even a full size hippodrome once used for chariot races. Jerash stands as a testament that Jordan has always been a crossroads of civilizations.

AL MAGHTAS | THE BAPTISM SITE OF JESUS

The Baptism Site of Jesus, known as Al-Maghtas in Arabic, is one of the most holy sights in Christianity. This part of the Jordan River is considered holy water. There are many churches dotting the Jordan River, the best access is the Greek Orthodox Church. In the middle of the river is a buoy, dividing the river between Jordan and Israel. Soldiers flank either side of the river. Getting to submerge myself in the same water Jesus was baptized in was a truly once in a lifetime spiritual experience. Al-Maghtas is only an hour from Amman.

Dead Sea

Situated at the lowest point on Earth, the Dead Sea is a traveler’s dream. I can’t fully describe the euphoric feeling of floating on its salty and gentle waves, arms and legs stretched out like a starfish. The mineral-rich mud here is famous for its rejuvenating and healing properties found nowhere else on Earth. Arid mountains flank either side of the Dead Sea, marking the border between Jordan and Israel. Make sure to rinse off afterward so the salt doesn’t irritate your skin.

Mt. Nebo

According to the Bible, Mt. Nebo is where Moses stood and overlooked the Promised Land. From the top of Mt Nebo, you can see the entire Jordan Valley, the Dead, Sea, and even Jerusalem. There is a modern basilica which covers centuries old christian mosaics.

Mt. Nebo is also close to both the Jordan River baptism site and the Dead Sea, making it easy to visit all three in a single day.
