Crete is one of the most wild and untamed places in all of Greece. Located at the southern edge of the country and surrounded by the endless blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is Greece’s largest island. Crete has always had a fiercely independent and resilient identity throughout its long history. It has unique traditions and customs that differ from the other regions and islands of Greece. Due to its location, it’s significantly warmer than the rest of Greece and its geography ranges from expansive olive groves, towering mountains, and exotic beaches. Visiting Crete truly feels like an adventure.

One of my favorite things about Crete is that there’s plenty of room to spread out, soak in the diverse scenery, and connect with the Greek culture and people on a deeper level. Even several weeks here won’t feel like enough. It would take a lifetime to fully appreciate all of Crete’s treasures.

A Brief History of crete

The history of Crete goes back to the earliest human settlements of both Greece and modern Europe. The Minoan Civilization was the first great power on Crete. They established flourishing port cities at Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania. The Minoans also built the expansive and lavish Palace of Knossos, famous in Greek mythology for the legend of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth.

Following the Minoans, Crete came under the control of the Mycenaean Empire, expanding the island’s cultural connection with the broader Greek world. The Roman and Byzantine civilizations both left their mark on Crete, followed by nearly 500 years of Venetian rule. The years of Venetian rule greatly shaped Crete. Although there was economic prosperity, the Greek Orthodox majority constantly resisted Venice.

The Ottoman Empire occupied Crete for nearly two hundred years. During this time, mosques with towering minarets transformed the skyline of Crete’s ports, many of which still stand today. The Cretans eventually joined the Greek Revolution that started in mainland Greece. Crete’s unification with Greece was finalized in 1913.

Why Visit Crete

Crete is one of my favorite islands in all of Greece. It’s massive, with four distinct regions that vary greatly in terrain and history. There are endless natural wonders, historical landmarks, cultural activities, and pristine beaches where the water remains warm for most of the year.

Exploring Crete feels more adventurous than other Greek islands. This is because of the diverse and exotic scenery that can change drastically within just a couple of miles. Crete will leave you truly inspired. You can visit multiple times and have a completely different experience on every trip.

Best Time to Visit Crete

The best time to visit Crete is April through early June and September through October. The weather is warm and sunny but less intense than during the highs of the summer months. Additionally, Crete is significantly less busy during these periods compared to the summer rush of July and August. The water also remains warm on Crete for the majority of the year.

Visiting Crete during Greek Orthodox Easter

A special time to visit Crete is during Easter. Like the rest of Greece, Crete observes Orthodox Easter, which usually falls on a different date than that celebrated by the Catholic Church and wider Christian world.

There are many beautiful religious services and traditions that take place during Holy Week. These are special opportunities to experience the cultural heritage of Crete, which is strongly influenced by the Greek Orthodox religion. On Easter Sunday, lamb is cooked all over the island.

How Many Days do You Need on Crete

How much time you spend on Crete depends on the length and goals of your trip.

In my opinion, a week is needed at minimum to even crack the surface of Crete. I spent ten days on the island and it was simply a taste of the island’s rich natural and historical beauty. You could truly spend a lifetime here connecting with the scenery and the culture of the place. The depth in Crete is immense.

However, It’s possible to visit Crete within just a few days if you plan right. I would say three days is enough time to visit one of the historic cities like Chania Town or Rethymno Town along with some of the other nearby beaches and sites in the region.

Getting to Crete

You can get to Crete either by plane or ferry.

Crete has three major airports with direct flights from Athens and Thessaloniki. They are located in Chania, Heraklion, and Sitia. The flight from Athens to Crete is less than an hour and tickets are very affordable.

The other option is to travel to Crete by sea. You can ferry from Athens or one of the Greek Islands. There are several ports on Crete, but the largest are in Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno. Ferry times vary, but the ferry from Athens usually takes around 8 hours.

Getting Around Crete

As Greece’s largest island, Crete is truly immense. It can take up to 7 hours to get from one end of the island to the other. The easiest way to get around Crete is by renting a car. However, if you’re nervous to drive on Crete, there are several other options to get around the island.

Renting a Car on Crete

The best way to get around Crete is by renting a car. By having your own vehicle, you’ll have the flexibility to get anywhere on the island whenever you want. Additionally, driving on Crete is incredibly scenic while taking in the diverse terrain which can change drastically within just a couple miles.

If you plan to drive on Crete, there’s a few things you should know. The main highway on the island stretches nearly the entire northern coast. It’s called the VOAK (Northern Road Axis of Crete). It spans all the coastal cities from Chania to Sitia. Other important roads connect the north to the south of the island throughout Crete’s four regions.

Driving on Crete’s smaller mountain roads and gravel passes can be both adventurous and slightly anxiety provoking. I took extra caution when driving through the tight and winding two lane mountain roads. Some of the paths through the gorges are very narrow and often hug steep cliffs. Additionally, if you’re tailgated by impatient locals or work trucks, let them pass. Trust me, you’ll have a much less stressful drive.

Scooters, Motorbikes, and ATVs

You can also rent a motorbike or ATV while on Crete. However, It’s never recommended to rent a vehicle your unfamiliar with, especially in a place like Crete.

Buses on Crete

Crete’s bus system, run by Greece’s KTEL, is a reliable and affordable way to get around the island without a car. It connects all the major cities with frequent routes along the north coast.

From Crete’s main cities, buses extend to beaches, villages, and key sites like Matala, Knossos Palace, and Samaria Gorge. However, these routes run less frequently and are often limited outside summer.

While the buses are a great way to get between Crete’s major cities, it becomes restrictive once you move beyond the main routes. Much of Crete’s beauty lies in its remote corners, where buses don’t usually reach.

Taxis and Uber on Crete

You can also use general taxi services or Uber on Crete. This is a good way to get around shorter distances within cities. Longer trips can also be arranged but costs could rise quickly. Longer distance fares are usually agreed upon in advance.

Where to Stay on Crete

Because of Crete’s size, the island is split up into four geographical regions. Where you stay will help determine travel time between cultural sites and beaches.

Accommodations on Crete range from no frills budget friendly hostels to some of the most luxurious and exclusive resorts in all of Greece.

Acro Wellness Resort

Staying at Acro Wellness Resort was one of the highlights of my first trip to Crete. The entire property is perched on a steep cliff just outside Heraklion that overlook the endless waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The aesthetic and design of the hotel is minimalist and earthy.

The property is very grounding and calming. Acro offers wellness packages such as daily yoga, spa services, and holistic treatments. Additionally, there’s a fully equipped onsite gym that overlooks the sea. There are multiple restaurants within the resort that use local and fresh Cretan ingredients. Breakfast is included on most bookings.

But by far, the most memorable part about staying at Acro is the rooms. Most rooms are private cave suites with a plunge pool that offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.

• Hotel Eleni, Matala: An affordable and laid back option near the famous caves of Matala Beach, perfect for travelers looking for a no frills stay by the sea.

Travel Hostels

• Cocoon City Hostel, Chania: A modern and social hostel with clean design and a welcoming atmosphere, ideal for meeting other travelers while staying close to the city center.
• Intra Muros Hostel, Heraklion: Set within the old city walls, this hostel offers a more intimate, communal feel with easy access to Heraklion’s main sights. The property has clean, calming Grecian architecture.

Below are the top places I visited while exploring Crete. Since Crete is colossal, I’ve broken down the most important places to see on Crete by the island’s four regions.

Chania Region

Chania is the Westernmost region of Crete. It’s often considered the most beautiful part of the island.

Chania is known for its exotic beaches, dramatic mountain gorges, and for having some of Crete’s best preserved architecture. Chania Town is a fascinating place to explore, with Venetian shipyards and churches that were once mosques (some with both belltowers and minarets still intact). It’s one of the prettiest coastal cities in all of Greece.

• Explore Chania Town: Chania Town is the center of Crete’s Western region. Explore the stunning churches, mosques, shipyards, and watch the sunset by the waterfront. It’s easy to take day trips into the broader Chania region from Chania Town.
• Balos Beach Lagoon: Balos Lagoon is one of the most famous beaches in all of Greece. It has shimmering and warm turquoise waters backed by rugged mountains.
• Akrotiri Peninsula: The Akrotiri Peninsula is a wild and hilly stretch of land that houses some of Crete’s most important monasteries. It’s blanketed by dense olive groves.
• Seitan Limania Cove: This is one of Crete’s greatest hidden beaches. It’s tucked away in the Akrotiri Peninsula. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunset.
• Aptera Archaeological Site: A low key historical site with an ancient amphitheater and columns amongst the olive trees. The site is backed by Crete’s White Mountains.
• Samaria Gorge: One of the most famous hikes in Greece. It’s one of the longest gorges in all of Europe.
• Elafonissi Beach: An expansive beach with soft pink sand and crystal clear water. It’s a great place to soak in the Cretan sea and sun.

Rethymno Region

Rethymno is situated between Chania and Heraklion. The Rethymno region is known for having some of Crete’s best beaches, authentic Cretan cultural events, and several important historic sites. Rethymno Town is a beautiful relic of Venetian and Ottoman architecture, with many mosques and churches dotting the port’s skyline.

• Rethymno Old Town: One of the best preserved historic towns on Crete, Rethymno’s Old Town is filled with Venetian alleys, Ottoman minarets, lively cafes, and a growing nightlife scene. Sunsets here are unforgettable near the old stone lighthouse.
• Preveli Palm Forest and Beach: Preveli may just be one of the most unique beaches in all of Greece. The beach is filled with wild date trees native to the island and a freshwater stream which runs directly into the sea.
• Arkadi Monastery: This is one of the most important historical and religious sites on Crete. Arkadi Monastery was famous for Its role in Crete’s struggle for independence against the Ottoman empire. It’s often dubbed “Crete’s Alamo”.
• Kalypso Bay: Hidden within a now semi abandoned resort, Kalypso Bay is one of the most idyllic places to swim in all of Crete. It’s a perfect place to spend the afternoon diving from the rocks into the Mediterranean Sea.
• Kourtaliotiko Gorge: Another beautiful gorge on Crete is the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. Towering limestone cliffs conceal a series of hidden waterfalls along with several mountain chapels.

Heraklion Region

As Crete’s capital and largest city, Heraklion has an abundance of places to visit both within Heraklion Town and the broader region. Heraklion is known for Its wild hills and mountains, historical sites, and traditional villages.

• Heraklion Town and Venetian Harbor: There are many things to discover within Heraklion’s historical city center. The Venetian Harbor, historic churches, and lively cafes make Heraklion an epicenter of Cretan culture.
• Acro Suites Wellness Resort: A luxurious adults only all inclusive wellness resort with breathtaking cliff views of the Mediterranean Sea. Many villas are cave suites with private plunge pools and sea views.
• Knossos Palace: Crete’s most famous archeological site, once the epicenter of the islands legendary Minoan Civilization. Knossos Palace is legendary for the labyrinth and mythical battle of the Minotaur.
• Agios Myron Greek Orthodox Shrine: A shrine with two churches commemorating Saint Myron, a 4th century bishop of Crete. His relics are miraculous and stream myrh or holy oil.
• Matala Beach: Matala was famous in the 1960s as a place hippie’s would gather and sleep in natural caves overlooking the sea. It is one of the most eclectic beaches in all of Crete.
• Master Christ the King Chapel: Situated high on the top of a mountain, this chapel is often blanketed by clouds. It’s a great place to connect with nature and light a candle in complete stillness. On a clear day, it offers unobstructed panoramic views of the Heraklion region.

Lasithi Region

Often less explored and traversed than the other regions of Crete, Lasithi is the most peaceful part of the island. The Lasithi region has a fertile elevated plateau with stunning sea views and green rolling plains. This is the best place to connect with the scenery and culture of Crete on the island’s easternmost region.

• Vai Beach: This is one of Crete’s most unique beaches. The shoreline is covered by a wall of tall date trees. Vai is Europe’s largest natural palm beach.
• Lasithi Plateau: Green and rolling hills with olive groves and iconic white windmills. Lasithi Plateau is also home to several traditional Cretan Villages. 
• Agios Nikolaos: Possibly the prettiest seaside town in all of Crete. Agios Nikolaos is centered around a very deep lake, which myth says is bottomless.
• Faneromeni Monastery: One of the most sacred monasteries on Crete famous for a miracle from the Virgin Mary. It’s a yearly pilgrimage destination for Cretans and visitors from all over Greece. 
• Itanos Beach: A concealed beach cove shaded by Tamarisk and Date trees, Itanos Beach is a perfect place to get away from the crowds and savor the joy of the Mediterranean Sea.

Beaches on Crete

Greece’s largest island has an abundance of beaches. From perfect stretches of soft sand to exotic coastlines covered by palm trees, there is a beach for every type of traveler who visits Crete.

• Balos Beach Lagoon: A breathtaking turquoise lagoon with shallow, crystal clear water and soft white sand, Balos feels like one of the most exotic beaches in all of Greece.
• Seitan Limania: Tucked between steep cliffs, Seitan Limania is a wild and dramatic cove known for its bright blue waters. Visitors often share the beach with local mountain goats.
• Elafonissi Beach: Famous for its soft pink sand, Elafonissi is one of the most unique and serene beaches in Crete.
• Preveli Beach: Where a river meets the sea beneath a lush palm forest, Preveli feels like a hidden oasis unlike anywhere else on the island.
• Kalypso Bay Beach: Set within a deep rocky cove, Kalypso Bay is a rugged, fjord-like beach known for its warm waters and rock diving.
• Vai Beach: Backed by Europe’s largest natural palm forest, Vai Beach brings a rare tropical feel to Crete with golden sand and clear blue water.
• Matala Beach: Known for its iconic cliffside caves and laid back vibe, Matala blends history, culture, and beautiful coastal views.
• Itanos Beach: A peaceful and lesser known beach near ancient ruins, Itanos offers a quiet escape from the crowds.

Monasteries on Crete

The monasteries on Crete have preserved both the spiritual and cultural fabric of Cretan life for thousands of years. They are more than religious institutions, they function as a living testimony to Crete’s history and resilience. Many have beautiful domes and bougainvillea filled courtyards that overlook the endless waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, many monasteries are painted from floor to ceiling with vivid and colorful Byzantine icons.

• Agia Triada Monastery: A beautifully preserved Venetian era monastery in Chania, Agia Triada is known for its stunning architecture, peaceful courtyards, and surrounding olive groves. It’s recognizable from It’s five orange domes.
• Arkadi Monastery: One of the most historic monasteries in Crete, Arkadi stands as a powerful symbol of Cretan resistance and sacrifice. 
• Gonia Monastery: Perched near the sea on the Rodopou Peninsula, Gonia Monastery has a fortress like design and offers sweeping views of the surrounding coast.
• Chrysoskalitissa Monastery: Dramatically set on a cliff above the sea, Chrysoskalitissa is known for its breathtaking location with panoramic views of the Mediterranean.
• Toplu Monastery: A fortified monastery in eastern Crete, Toplou is known for its imposing tower, rich history, and surrounding vineyards.
• Faneromeni monastery: Set in a quiet mountainous landscape, Faneromeni Monastery is literally built into the rock. It’s famous for a yearly pilgrimage in honor of the Virgin Mary which takes place every August.
• Preveli Monastery: Overlooking the Libyan Sea, Preveli Monastery is both a scenic and historic site tied to Crete’s resistance during wartime.

The Mani Peninsula is one of the most remote and untouched regions in all of Greece. Located at the very bottom of the Peloponnese, it’s the southernmost part of the Greek mainland. Wild olive groves and towering cypress trees extend from the mountains all the way to the sea. Tall stone towers dot the Mediterranean landscape, creating a unique sense of mystery. Until recently, the Mani wasn’t very touristed. Traveling here is an encounter with the very essence of the Greek spirit and culture. The Mani was never occupied by the Ottoman Empire. Subsequently, many of the key leaders of the Greek Revolution of 1821 hailed from the peninsula’s seaside towns and rocky villages.

There are many traditional villages with unique architecture, which is distinct from the rest of Greece. Family homes were built tall and slender with thick walls and narrow windows. The design of these towers was oriented towards practicality rather than aesthetics, as families and tribes often warred with one another for dominance. This was Greece’s true “Wild West”. The internal violence and conflict of the Mani has long passed. Today, travelers are greeted with charming villages, beaches concealed by walls of olive and cypress trees, and rugged landscapes unlike anywhere else in Greece.

Where is the Mani

Located just south of the coastal port city of Kalamata, the Mani is a slender and mountainous peninsula. It’s the middle of the three peninsulas at the southern tip of Greece’s Peloponnese region, forming a shape that resembles a fork. It boasts the southernmost point on the Greek mainland marked by the lighthouse of Cape Tainaron. In Greek mythology, this spot was thought to be the entrance to Hades, or the underworld.

Due to the rugged and inaccessible terrain and its history of tribal conflict, many of the key leaders of Greece’s Independence movement from the Ottoman Empire hailed from the Mani.

Getting to the Mani

To reach the Mani Peninsula, you have to get to Kalamata in the south of Greece. From Athens, you can either fly, drive, or take the bus to Kalamata.

The flight from Athens to Kalamata is usually less than an hour. Tickets are very affordable and there are multiple direct flights a day.

Additionally, you can drive from Athens to Kalamata. It’s a roughly 4 hour trip one way on the A7 Motorway. Along the highway, you will find many toll stations that collect fees. These toll stations collect between 1-2 euro per stop. They span the entirety of the road making them impossible to avoid. In total, it costs around 15-20 euro one way on the highway. There are smaller side roads throughout the Peloponnese, but the time it would take to reach Kalamata would nearly triple, not to mention some of them being in questionable condition. It’s worth the time and convenience to just use the tollway.

There’s also a bus connecting Athens to Kalamata. The bus departs from the Kifissos KTEL Bus station and takes 3 hours to reach Kalamata. There are multiple trips a day, the earliest departing Athens at 7:00 a.m. Typical tickets cost around 25 euros. This is a great option for budget travelers since It’s cheaper than flying or renting a car

Getting Around the Mani

The easiest way to get around the Mani is by renting a car. Having your own car will give you the greatest flexibility to go off the beaten path and explore some of Mani’s unexpected treasures.

You can either rent a car in Kalamata or drive from Athens to the Mani like I did. It was one of my greatest adventures in Greece to drive from Athens to the southernmost point of the Greek mainland. It was a roadtrip of a lifetime.

The main roads of the Mani are paved and are overall easy to drive on. Side roads are often made of gravel or dirt and are more narrow. I wouldn’t recommend driving at night since there are barely any street lights in the Mani.

Buses run from Kalamata through the Mani connecting bigger towns like Areopoli and Gerolimenas. However, many travelers report that buses are infrequent and not super reliable.

The narrow and mountainous Mani Peninsula is full of countless hidden beaches and rolling hills, carpeted with endless olive groves and cypress trees.

I’ve described every place I visited in the Mani so you can plan your own adventure and roadtrip through the southernmost region of the Greek mainland.

Kalamata

Kalamata is the natural starting point for trips to the Mani Peninsula. It’s the second biggest city on the Peloponnese and is the capital of the Messinia region. Kalamata is a lively city and is one of my favorites in all of Greece. It’s full of charm and character: local cafes buzzing with life, narrow streets where laundry hangs over balconies, and motorbikes speeding through the alleys.

Overlooking the coastal city and Mediterranean Sea is the Castle of Kalamata. Built in the 13th century by the Franks, it is one of the city’s proudest landmarks. At night, It’s illuminated by soft orange lights. The waterfront promenade, which runs along Navarinou Street, is full of restaurants and coffee shops where you can sit near the water or go for a morning swim.

You can easily spend a few days in Kalamata before setting off on your road trip through the Mani Peninsula.

Polylimnio Waterfalls

While in Kalamata, I made a minor detour before heading south into the Mani. Roughly 45 minutes west of Kalamata’s  city center, the Polylimnio Waterfalls are a series of cascading freshwater streams that empty into a set of sparkling emerald pools. The largest of the waterfalls is at the back of the canyon.

You can swim in the refreshing freshwater pools and let the waterfalls rush over your head. At first, it’s a little brisk, but as you swim and adjust, the water is actually surprisingly pleasant. The entire hike took me around two hours to complete, which included time swimming under the waterfalls. Parking is free and I’ve added the location in my map.

Barreira Beach Bar

As I drove out of Kalamata south toward the Mani peninsula, I found a small beachfront that caught my attention. Barreira Beach Bar is a warm and coz spot right on Kalamata’s shoreline with umbrellas, lounge chairs, and eclectic decor.

It’s the perfect spot to lounge for a few hours sipping drinks and swimming in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The entire beach is backed by soaring limestone mountains, highlighting the beauty and contrast of Kalamata’s terrain. The beach has small pebble rocks, so I recommend bringing water shoes. Like many of the beaches in Greece, these rocky shores are not fun to walk on barefoot. 

The Drive Down South into the Mani Peninsula

The drive south from Kalamata into the Mani is an unforgettable drive. The road is filled with endless olive groves, towering cypress trees, and pine forests. The landscape only becomes more dramatic and rugged the deeper you travel into the Mani.

I discovered gorgeous side roads with endless olive trees overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The nature of this region is one of the most raw and wild in all of Greece. Photographers and nature lovers will want to take their time to capture the scenery and surrounding villages.

Maniot Architecture

Along the road, I came across many old brick towers and fortified stone villages. This architecture is distinct to the Mani peninsula and is unlike anywhere else in Greece. The thick walls and tall towers were essential for the threats of both outside invasion and internal rivalries. The toughness of the region is demonstrated in these unique structures; ghosts of the peninsula’s past can be found everywhere in the Mani.

The villages of Kampos, Stavropigi, and Vathia showcase the unmistakable fortress-like architecture of the Mani. Homes are built out local stones, which helps harmonize with the natural surroundings. It’s very different from the white washed architecture of the Greek Islands.

Kardamyli

Kardamyli is one of the most charming towns in the Mani. Quaint streets lined with mulberry trees are filled with local cafes, artisan shops, and apartments adorned with wrought iron balconies. Outside the main streets, on shaded dirt roads, proud old homes built with sturdy stones look as though they’ve seen generations come and go from the Mani Peninsula’s arid soil. This is one of the best destinations to savor the Mani at a slower pace.

Just outside the streets of the main town is the Old Kardamyli Traditional Restaurant. This little taverna is shaded by ancient trees with sturdy wooden tables. It’s placed right in the heart of an expansive olive grove. It feels like it’s actually part of the landscape rather than a place to eat. The menu includes local Maniot recipes cooked with fresh and local ingredients. There’s also several friendly kittens who call the restaurant home.

Kalamitsi

Just down the road from Kardamyli lies Kalamitsi, one of the most idyllic coastlines in all of Greece. Kalamitsi Beach is framed by towering cypress trees and the water is shallow and calm for swimming. The view of Kalamitsi Beach is truly breathtaking, opening up to a vista of the tree covered coast and the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. There’s a place to park and enjoy the view just off the main road which I’ve included in my Google Maps.

It’s the perfect spot to swim and lounge amidst the lush Mediterranean vegetation. Kalamitsi is still one of the most underrated beaches in all of Greece.

Patrick Leigh Fermor Home

My fascination with the Mani Peninsula began when I read Patrick Leigh Fermor’s Mani: Travels in the Southern Peloponnese. Patrick, an English expat who served with the Allied forces during the liberation of Crete during WWII, was one of the greatest travel writers in the 20th century and a lover of Greece.

Patrick and his wife Joan moved to the Mani and built a grand home in Kalamitsi. Their house was built entirely in traditional Maniot architecture and constructed from local materials. Inside the home, hundreds if not thousands of books belonging to Patrick and Joan line the shelves. A panoramic terrace on top of a rocky cliff overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and the cypress trees covering Kalamitsi Beach. Additionally, the house has a private path down to the shoreline.

Patrick Leigh Fermor’s home is now a private guesthouse. Individual rooms or the entire property can be booked at a time. Understandably, prices can surge during summer months. Additionally, tours operate several times a week or on request.

Agios Nikolaos

Around 15 minutes south of Kalamitsi is Agios Nikolaos, a rocky seaside town framed by the Taygetus mountain range which spans the entire western side of the Mani Peninsula. Its rugged beauty made it a memorable half way point on my road trip through the Mani.

Its unique setting sandwiched between the Taygetus mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea give it an idyllic, almost cinematic feeling. You could easily spend a few days in Agios Nikolaos, swimming in the sea and eating at the local family run tavernas.

I stayed at Calme Suites, a charming bed and breakfast. The property includes a group of fully renovated stone residences built with traditional Maniot architecture. It’s a one minute walk from the sea. Another perk of staying at Calme Suites is free breakfast at Medikon, a seaside cafe right on the waterfront. It has a large breakfast selection. I highly recommend getting the Greek coffee served in a traditional copper kettle called a briki. It’s a very authentic Greek experience.

Byzantine Churches of the Mani

As I continued driving south deeper into the Mani, I was amazed by how many churches and chapels dot the countryside and rolling hills of the peninsula. Many are small domed structures crowned with orange clay roofs.

The majority of these churches were built during the Byzantine period and are painted from the floor to ceiling with Orthodox icons. Some of the icon frescos are nearly 500 years old. The icons are visibly worn and withered by time and years of soot from burning incense and lighting beeswax candles.

You can find these churches throughout the entirety of the Mani. Many are undergoing restorations to preserve the unique historical and spiritual heritage of the region.

Maniatika Artopoiemata Greek Bakery

As you continue onwards from Agios Nikolaos, you’ll pass one of the best bakeries in all of the Mani. Maniatika Artopoiemata Bakery is full of locally produced Maniot products like olive oil, honey, jam, fresh breads, and traditional Greek pastries.

I was amazed at their expansive selection of Greek desserts and cookies. I got an assorted bag of traditional Greek cookies to try as many as possible. This is an absolute must stop on a trip through the Mani. They also have a large patio to enjoy your sweets and a coffee.

Areopoli | Capital of the Mani

Areopoli is the historical capital of the Mani Peninsula. Due to the region’s history of tribal conflicts and internal struggles, Areopoli is named in honor of Ares, god of war.

Areopoli is a fascinating village to explore. The town is lined with old cobblestoned streets, stone towers, and several Greek Orthodox chapels with vivid paintings of the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. There are many modern coffee shops as well and restaurants serving local dishes and souvlaki gyros. The atmosphere of Areopoli is laid back and mellow yet full of tavernas and artisan shops.

During the summer months, Areopoli has many concerts and traditional panagiris (Greek festivals) with barbecued lamb and Greek dancing. It serves as an epicenter of cultural life in the region.

Kyrimai Hotel

Located in the fishing village of Gerolimenas, Kyrimai Hotel is one of the most enchanting properties to stay at in all of the Mani. Formerly a private stone home for a wealthy trading family, Kyrimai Hotel was converted into a 5 star property and retains all the character and charm of its former glory. No detail was spared, with detailed maps of the region and old photos displayed throughout the hotel. Arches, panoramic terraces, and hidden staircases add to the architectural depth of Kyrimai Hotel. It evokes the very soul of the Mani and the best of Greek hospitality.

The hotel sits right on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The sound of the ocean literally lulls you to sleep. Kyramia has both a pool and lounge chairs near the sea to relax. I spent hours sipping Greek coffees and orange juice vodkas while diving off rocks into the warm embrace of the sea. I would suggest spending at least a leisurely half a day at Kyrami just to enjoy the rejuvenating elements of the property’s slow pace.

I booked the Master Suite. This room is truly magical, with countless windows to let in the sea breeze and a private patio overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The canopied bed is upstairs and requires climbing a set of old wooden stairs.

Vathia Stone Towers

One of the most surreal towns in all of the Mani Peninsula is Vathia. Now semi abandoned, Vathia is considered a “ghost village”. The town is full of many tall stone towers where local clans and families fought one another for dominance. Exploring Vathia feels like stepping back in time to a different world. The towers of Vathia stand as silent witnesses to the history of the Mani’s tribal past. Vathia is especially beautiful to visit in the late afternoon before sunset.

Cape Tainaron

In my opinion, Cape Tainaron is the most special place in all of the Mani. It’s the southernmost point of the Greek mainland (with Crete being 150 miles further south). Cape Tainaron is marked by a simple lighthouse built on the last rocks of Greek earth. Seeing the sunset here was truly a once in a lifetime experience for me, as I watched the fishing boats and shipping vessels moving in the distance, the backbone of the Greek economy. There is a unique energy here, the place where the Ionian and Aegean Seas meet and where the ancients thought the entrance to Hades or the afterlife began.

The walk to the lighthouse is around an hour each way. It’s an easy path for the most part, but as you approach the lighthouse, sections of the trail become more rocky and uneven. I suggest starting the walk back from the lighthouse shortly after sunset to avoid hiking in total darkness.

3 Day Mani Guide Itinerary

My Experience on Karpathos – A Hidden Corner of the Aegean

Karpathos is unlike any Greek island I’ve ever visited. Its rugged landscape invites a unique sense of adventure that stirs the traveler’s deepest sense of wanderlust. After a short hour flight from Athens on one of Olympic Air’s small propeller planes, I was met by towering limestone peaks, dense pine forests, and sweeping cliffside views of the Karpathian mountain range that runs through the entire island.

Perched at the far edge of the Dodecanese, Karpathos still bears the legacy of its ancient Doric ancestors, visible in the island’s dialect, customs, and timeless mountain villages like Olympos. Built between two mountains, Olympos clings to the cliffside and overlooks the vastness of the sparkling Aegean Sea. The beaches on Karpathos are truly mesmerizing. From peaceful coves concealed by pine forests to volcanic black sand shorelines, the beaches on Karpathos will leave you breathless.

Visiting Karpathos allowed me to connect with the Greece I so often search for. A Greece not watered down from the impact of overtourism, social media, and materialism. I think that’s what makes Karpathos so special: its dramatic scenery, its authenticity, and its commitment to preserving the heart of Greek culture while still welcoming visitors with open arms.

Best Time to Visit Karpathos

Karpathos is still very much a hidden gem when it comes to the Greek islands. Compared to islands like Santorini and Mykonos, Karpathos retains a more authentic and local atmosphere.

With that said, Karpathos is beginning to turn heads in the travel community. In early 2025, Karpathos was listed as one of the top 10 emerging global destinations. I recommend visiting now before the island’s popularity continues to increase.

The best time to visit Karpathos is during Greece’s shoulder seasons which runs from May through early June and September. During these months, the weather is less intense during the daytime and the ocean is still warm. The island is much busier in the peak summer months of July and August.

Holidays and Greek Orthodox Feast Days

A special time to experience the spiritual and cultural heritage of Karpathos is during Greek Orthodox holidays. These feast days are deeply observed and cherished by the locals.

Orthodox Easter is the most important holiday in Greece and the island comes alive with elaborate religious services and community celebrations. Even as a visitor, you’ll be welcomed with open arms and likely invited to share the Easter meal, centering around fresh cooked lamb.

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15 is another major feast day often called the ‘summer Easter.’ In the days leading up to it, villages across Karpathos host panagiris, or Greek festivals filled with food, music, and dance. The village of Olympos has an especially big celebration, with locals wearing traditional clothing.

getting to Karpathos

Flying is the fastest way to reach Karpathos. There are at least 3 daily flights from Athens to Karpathos. The flight is quick, lasting approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. A ticket one way costs around €50.

It’s also possible to ferry to Karpathos. You can ferry directly from the Piraeus Port in Athens or from nearby islands like Rhodes or Crete.

Getting Around Karpathos

There are several ways to get around while exploring Karpathos. Since Karpathos is a relatively large island, you won’t be able to walk to different regions of the island.

Rent a Car (Best Option)

The best way to get around Karpathos is by renting a car. Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore at your own pace. The main highways are in excellent condition while smaller roads are usually made of gravel or dirt and require extra caution.

Although driving in the main port of Pigadia and mountain villages can be difficult due to small roads, it becomes less intimidating once you get the hang of it. If you plan to visit remote villages or beaches where the road is unpaved, I recommend renting a 4WD.

Most of the rental car pick up locations are at the airport, but there are a few branches in the port of Pigadia, Karpathos capital and main town.

I also thought the daily rental price was pretty affordable on Karpathos compared to other Greek islands.

Bus

Karpathos also has a local bus system that connects the main villages and beaches to Pigadia. Buses are affordable and routes stop at the most popular villages and beaches.

Keep in mind that schedules can be limited, especially outside of peak seasons. However, if you don’t mind traveling Karpathos at a slower pace, the bus could be a good option for exploring the island.

Taxi

Another way to get around Karpathos is by Taxi. Fares are usually set for transportation to the airport and popular beaches and rides can be set up in advance. However, the costs can add up quickly, so It’s definitely more economical to rent a car.

Istia Luxury Villas

During my visit to Karpathos, I stayed at Istia Luxury Villas.  Nestled in the hills just above the port of Pigadia, staying at Istia felt like a dream. Built on top of an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite, the grounds of Istia are exceptionally beautiful and calming.

The property is secure and gated which made me feel extra safe as a solo traveller. From the second you walk into the property, you are greeted by the view of an infinity pool that overlooks the Karpathian mountains and the Aegean Sea. 

The design of the property is meant to be minimalistic in all the best ways, combining natural elements with the iconic white washed island architecture. Each of the four villas has their own designated floating pool lounge, a large living room with floor to ceiling windows, 2 luxurious bedrooms, and a spacious kitchen.

Guests can visit the onsite ancient temple of Aphrodite, which is only accessible to Istia guests. Istia Luxury Villas is one of my favorite properties I have stayed at in all of Greece.

Karpathos is a perfect island for solo travelers. The island offers many unique and impactful experiences for those looking to take a trip by themselves. Things to do on Karpathos

These are the places and activities I enjoyed most while exploring Karpathos.

Port of Pigadia

A good place to start exploring Karpathos is the port of Pigadia, the islands capital. The waterfront of Pigadia is lined with many lively restaurants, tavernas, bars, and coffee shops. It’s the perfect place to sip a Greek coffee or cappuccino and watch the island slowly come to life.

Pigadia is also Karpathos’ main transportation hub and largest port. Many ferries arrive daily from Athens and nearby islands like Rhodes and Crete. Pigadia was first inhabited by the ancient Dorians. Considered ancestors of modern day Karpathians, the Dorians’ presence on the island dates back over 3,000 years.

One of the best things to do is walk along the seaside promenade which has shops and apartments overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. If you have the time, I recommend walking through the Archaeological Museum of Karpathos to see some of the island’s earliest artifacts.

The main church of Pigadia is the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The church holds religious and cultural significance to the island and has vivid Byzantine icons lining the walls from the floor to the ceiling.

Villages on Karpathos

Karpathos is dotted with extraordinary mountain and seaside villages that preserve the island’s residential and communal feel. These villages, or Chorios, offer fascinating glimpses into local life and are incredible places to explore.

Olympos

One of the main reasons I chose to visit Karpathos was to see the traditional mountain village of Olympos. Built on the cliffside of two mountains that overlook the Aegean Sea, Olympos captures the very heart of Karpathian culture and is a place where family, community, and tradition shape everyday life.

Unchanged for centuries, Olympos is deeply rooted in the Doric traditions of Karpathos’ ancestors. Local women wear unique headscarves called mandíli and the houses are built in traditional styles that blend harmoniously into the surrounding terrain. The entire village is off limits to cars, protecting the cultural heritage of Olympos.

One of the most special things about Olympos is how timeless it feels. Until recent memory, Olympos was relatively isolated from the rest of Greece and functioned as a self contained community. Running water, electricity, and modern roads only reached the village in the later half of the 20th century. Today, it’s home to less than 1,000 permanent residents. Many of the villagers have relocated elsewhere in Greece, Europe, and the United States and come back for holidays and special celebrations.

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Sitting atop Olympos like a crown, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church is the village’s spiritual core. The interior of the church is old, dark, and mystical. The ceiling is lined with withered frescos from years of burning beeswax candles and incense, some dating back to the Byzantine period. The church includes a golden iconastasis with silver gilded icons, stained glass windows, and wood railings where elderly can lean on during long services.

Staying in Olympos

If you have the time, staying the night in Olympos could be a really special way to experience the village at a slower pace. You’ll be able to watch the sunrise and sunset and gaze up at the stars unobstructed from city lights.

Here are a few hotels to stay in Olympos village:

• Olympos Princess Villa: Clean and minimal yet showcasing traditional Karpathian architecture. A very authentic stay. 
• Irene’s House: Traditional home with intricate and warm Karpathian wood carvings. Feels grounding for a quick stay on Olympos.
• Anemos Guest House: Offers an expansive patio with views of the village and Aegean Sea. Simple, clean rooms with all the essential amenities a traveler could need.

Other Villages on Karpathos

While Olympos is the most beautiful village on the island in my opinion, here is a list of other villages to explore while on Karpathos.

• Diafani: Colorful fishing village just north of Olympos. Has a quiet harbor with tavernas, small guesthouses, and a beach.
• Menetes: Remarkable views of the sea and cobbled alleys above Pigadia. Menetes is known for a large church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is considered one of the island’s holiest churches.
• Mesochori: Known as the middle village. Mesochori’s white houses protrude out of the mountains and have a panoramic views. It’s the perfect place to go for a stroll and take in the beauty of Karpathos villages.
• Aperi: Once the capital of the island, Aperi stands out with its red tiled mansions and its flower filled courtyards. It is the perfect place to grab a coffee and slow down in one of the village’s many fountain adorned squares.

Chapels and Churches in karpathos

It’s estimated that Karpathos is home to more than 300 chapels and churches. Many are perched high on mountaintops, overlooking the sea, or tucked away in caves.

Each chapel is dedicated to a saint or feast day in the life of Christ or the Virgin Mary. A wooden iconostasis often divides the altar from the rest of the church.

One of my favorite chapels on Karpathos was the Church of Holy Archangels. There is an icon of the Archangel Michael and an intricate wood carving of Christ on the cross standing over serpents. This was a beautiful place to light a candle and say a prayer.

When visiting, remember to extinguish candles in the sand box and dispose of them in the metal fireproof boxes. And if the chapel has a gate, be sure to close it behind you, it’s there to keep the goats out.

Beaches on Karpathos

Karpathos has some of the most breathtaking beaches in all of Greece. From quiet coves hidden in dense pine forests to pristine sandy shorelines, these are the top beaches that stood out to me the most while exploring Karpathos.

Agios Minas Beach

My favorite beach on Karpathos is Agios Minas Beach. This beach is tucked away in the north of the island just off the main highway connecting the port of Pigadia to Olympos. A small detour marked by a withered sign leads you down the rugged gravel road to Agios Minas Beach.

Agios Minas Beach is a secluded bay covered with wild olive trees. The beach itself has a volcanic black pebble coastline and gentle waves perfect for swimming. I recommend renting a daybed with an umbrella which cost me around 10 euros. Above the beach, the little Agios Minas chapel clings to the hillside, offering unforgettable views of the sparkling sea below.

There are two Greek tavernas if you are hungry for some mouthwatering seafood. The calamari was very fresh and came right from the sea. I definitely recommend having lunch here. The food is amazing and you get to support the local families who run these amazing restaurants.

Although Agios Minas Beach is incredible, I highly recommend having a car that is able to go off roading. The drive down to the beach is unpaved and rocky. The road is not very big, barely wide enough for two cars to pass. I have included everything you need to know about the drive and planning a day trip to Agios Minas Beach in another blog.

Apella Beach

Often ranked as one of the most gorgeous beaches in all of Greece, Appella Beach is truly mesmerizing. Appella is tucked away in a hidden cove and is framed by dramatic pine covered cliffs that slope all the way down to the shoreline. The beach has soft white pebbles and shimmering blue waters.

You can rent a recliner with an umbrella for a few Euros or bring your own towel to enjoy the beach. There is also a small taverna above the beach which offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. It’s also worth mentioning the drive to Apella was absolutely stunning and shaded by beautiful forests and views of the ocean.

Diakoftis Beach

Located at the southernmost tip of Karpathos, Diakoftis beach truly feels like a dream. The water here was very warm. But the most impressive thing about Diakoftis beach is that the water is crystal clear. You can literally see your feet on the ocean floor. It feels like your’e in the Caribbean rather than in the Mediterranean Sea. The beach is also shallow, making it the perfect place to wade in the water and swim. It’s also near the airport, so it’s the perfect place to plane watch.

• Kyra Panagia Beach: Picturesque beach with a mix of soft sand and pebbles. A small red domed chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary overlooks the beach.
• Lefkos Beach: Sandy bay perfect for swimming. Lefkos has clear waters and lounge chairs and is backed by juniper trees.
• Agios Nikolaos (Arkasa): Located near the village of Arkasa, Agios Nikolas beach has golden sand and is known for its sunsets. It is surrounded by mountains which protects it from winds.

I created my Mount Athos Guide to help you prepare for your journey to Greece’s Holy Mountain. There is no place in the world quite like Athos – Old Soul Explorer.

Mount Athos is one of the most otherworldly and unusual places in all of Greece. It’s also one of the most unforgettable for those privileged enough to visit. The first time I ever heard of Mount Athos was in a 60 Minutes documentary. From the moment I first learned about this place, I was captivated and knew I had to visit.

Often referred to as the Agion Oros (Holy Mountain in Greek), visiting Mount Athos feels like stepping into another world, one seemingly untouched by time. Towering monasteries with high walls and crowned by domes cling to the cliffside or sit on steep hills overlooking the Aegean Sea. They are surrounded by dense forests and breathtaking coastlines, many having their own harbors and ports.

Traveling to Mount Athos isn’t a vacation though, it’s a pilgrimage. It’s a place to seek solitude and contemplation, to reflect and take in everything this place has to offer about this life and beyond. I felt its spiritual energy the moment I stepped off the speedboat that carried us from the mainland to this sacred peninsula set apart from the world.

In my Mount Athos guide, I’ve included everything you need to know about visiting the Holy Mountain. This is a destination that requires careful planning, so I’ve included tips and insights on requesting visitor permits, securing accommodations at the monasteries, transportation, and what a typical day on Mount Athos looks like. I hope you enjoy your time on the Holy Mountain and leave both enlightened and inspired.

What is Mount Athos

Mount Athos is a secluded peninsula in Northern Greece with 20 monasteries where monks live in total devotion to prayer and contemplation. The peninsula is a place of solitude, ritual, and timeless spirituality. It is often considered the beating heart of the Eastern Orthodox religious tradition.

Women are barred from visiting, maintaining the monks’ undisturbed spiritual focus on the monastic way of life and patronage to the Virgin Mary. This restriction, known as the Avaton rule, has been upheld since the establishment of the earliest monasteries on Athos.

A Brief History of Mount Athos

Mount Athos has served as a spiritual sanctuary for thousands of years. The first monasteries were founded in the 9th century when hermits and monks sought solitude and contemplation among the peninsula’s remote forested cliffs.

The Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos formally recognized Mount Athos as an autonomous monastic republic in 1045. More monasteries sprang up, many built with stone walls and towers to protect against invading armies and pirates. The monasteries also became centers of learning and culture, translating the Bible into multiple languages and refining the art of icon painting with delicate gold leaf. Many were economically self sufficient, producing wine, honey, and olive oil for trade with the outside world.

Thanks to the monks’ diplomacy and political skills, the Holy Mountain continued to function normally throughout Ottoman rule which lasted from the 15th-19th centuries. After the Greek War of Independence, the autonomy of Mount Athos was enshrined in the Greek constitution. To this day, life flows as it always has on Athos. Apart from the arrival of electricity and a few buses, very little has changed since the Byzantine era.

My Experience on Mount Athos

Mount Athos is single handedly the most unique place I’ve visited in all of Greece. Time and space are suspended here; the rhythm of life operates independently from the rest of the world. This is Christianity’s Nepal and Tibet, the beating heart of the Eastern Orthodox mystical experience. During my four day stay, I attended the full cycle of religious services, ate with the monks in the refectory (dining hall), and saw spiritual relics and Orthodox icons that were literally thousands of years old.

Being a half Greek American traveler, visiting Mount Athos was a rare opportunity to connect with both my religion and culture. Being woken up at 3 a.m. to attend the liturgy in ancient Greek with only a few lit candles preventing me from tripping over thousand year old uneven marble floors felt like a once in a lifetime experience. In the middle of the night, the hanging oil lamps illuminating the icons of the Virgin Mary and the saints looked like twinkling stars in the otherwise pitch black church. I didn’t mind that I didn’t know the language, I felt everything that was happening: the chanting, the incense, and the gaze of the icons that pierce right through you. This place is one of Greece’s greatest treasures.

For me, hiking the wooded trails around the monasteries that overlook the Aegean Sea was a profoundly reflective and contemplative experience. Many of the trails are built on the balconies of mountains that offer panoramic views of the ocean and are surrounded by dense forests of olive, cypress, and pine trees. The nature here is truly some of the most scenic and protected in all of Greece. Towering above it all is the peak of Mount Athos, casting an even deeper air of mystery over the terrain.

A Holy Place With Complicated Realities

And while I had a profoundly impactful experience on Mount Athos, I also felt conflicted about being there at times. It didn’t hit me how I would feel about women being prohibited from visiting Athos until I got there. I never understood why women were banned from visiting, which has been enforced since the Holy Mountains earliest foundations. It was hard to wrap my head around why the miraculous belt of the Virgin Mary, known for curing infertility and protecting women during childbirth, was kept on a peninsula where only men can access.

I struggled with the fact that I was surrounded by so many Russian pilgrims who while kind and devout, were allowed to visit Mount Athos during a war of aggression between two Orthodox countries. Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill called the invasion a “holy war”. The response of the Holy Mountain has been one of silence if not aloofness toward the situation. These things were not lost upon me during my time at one of the holiest places in Orthodoxy.

But I remained silent. I was visiting Mount Athos as a guest, as a traveler. My task was simply to absorb as much as I could. Sometimes, having a nuanced experience is what makes travel so impactful to begin with.

Best Time to Visit mount Athos

Mount Athos gets busiest during the summer months of July-August. Many Greeks and pilgrims from Eastern Europe are on summer break during this time. Monasteries overflow with visitors and hiking between them can be uncomfortable due to the heat. The Holy Mountain is also especially crowded during major feast days such as Pascha (Easter) and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15.

I visited towards the end of September and the weather was perfect. It was warm and pleasant during the day and cooler in the evening. Additionally, the rainy season hadn’t fully arrived yet so the days wer’e sunnier. May to early June is another ideal time to explore the Holy Mountain before the crowds and heat arrive.

Who Can Visit Mount Athos

Only men are allowed to visit Mount Athos. This is due to the “Avaton” rule which was set in place during the Byzantine Empire. The tradition was established to preserve the monks celibate way of life and their spiritual focus on the Virgin Mary, who according to tradition, was the last woman to set foot on the Holy Mountain. Even female animals are barred from Athos.

Pilgrims to Mount Athos must be over 18 years old. Orthodox and non Orthodox can visit, but priority is given to Orthodox Christians.

How Can Women experience Mount Athos

I personally do not understand why women are not allowed to visit Mount Athos. This rule will most likely never change. However, women pilgrims can sometimes take a cruise around the Holy Mountain. The boat is required to stay 2,000 feet away from the peninsula at all times. The cruise usually offers views of seaside monasteries like Xenophontos, Simonopetra, and Dionysiou and holy relics and icons are often brought aboard for blessings.

Diamonitirion | Entry Visa for Mount Athos

Mount Athos is a semi autonomous monastic republic. While under Greek sovereignty, Mount Athos is exempt from certain civil laws that allow it the freedom to manage its own affairs. The Greek Constitution (Article 105, Section 2) explicitly recognizes the autonomy of Mount Athos. International law and the European Union also acknowledge the self governance of the Holy Mountain.

Because of this, Mount Athos has the authority to allow or deny entry to visitors at their discretion (hence no women allowed). The Diamonitirion is the special entrance permit needed for anyone who wants to steep foot on Athos. The document serves as a visa and is issued by the Pilgrims’ Bureau of the Holy Mountain, typically granting permission to visit for 4 days and 3 nights. If you would like to stay longer, you will need special permission from the Pilgrims Bureau with your reason for an extended stay. The entry permit must be acquired by all visitors, even clergy. You will need to keep this document with you throughout your stay on the Agion Oros. Many of the monasteries ask to see it upon arrival before showing you to your room.

You can apply for the Diamonitirion up to six months in advance. Applications are on a first come first serve basis. There are 100 permits for Orthodox and 10 for non Orthodox issued per day. I recommend requesting your Diamonitirion as early as you can, especially if you plan to visit Mount Athos during the summer months. The Diamonitirion costs between € 30-35.

I’ve included the location of the Pilgrims Bureau in my Google Maps attached to this blog. This is where you will pick up the Diamonitirion permit before embarking on your journey to Athos.

Getting To Mount Athos

It’s quite the journey just to get to Mount Athos. First, you’ll need to fly to Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city. From there, you’ll have to get to the KTEL Chalkidikis Bus Station. The bus station is a good distance from the historical city center.

It’s approximately a 3 hour bus ride from Thessaloniki to Ouranoupoli, the port city that serves as the launching pad for trips to Mount Athos. Along the way, the bus stops at small chorios (villages) and even on the side of the road to pick up passengers. Some of the bus stops are at the most random locations. Ouranoupoli is the very last stop.

Tickets usually cost less than €15 which I found a great value for the experience overall. The bus to Ouranoupoli felt clean and the seats were spacious. I definitely recommend purchasing your tickets in advance to secure your transportation to Athos and reserve a better seat.

Get to the bus station early. Announcements are only in Greek and the lines are not well organized. I made sure to ask the staff behind the glass counters inside the bus station where I was supposed to wait. I didn’t want to miss my ride.

Note: due to a translation error KTEL, names Ouranoupoli as“Oyranoypoli”. You will need to look up the destination location under this name. The website has the full list of bus trips and times. I booked seat 4 at the front of the bus by the window. It was a good way to soak in the small villages and the countryside of Greece’s Chalkidiki region.

The alternative to taking the KTEL bus is to hire a private taxi or rent a car and drive to Ouranoupoli, both of which would be much more expensive.

Ouranoupoli | Gateway to Mount Athos

The small port town of Ouranoupoli serves both as a cheap summer vacation hotspot and the departure point for pilgrims to Mount Athos. You’ll see a mix of families going to the beach, pilgrims with hiking gear, and monks in flowing cassocks. There are several tavernas and cafes by the waterfront along with overpriced jewelry and icon shops.

I’d recommend staying the night in Ouranoupoli that way you can catch the earliest ferry to Athos the following morning. I stayed at the Arxontariki Suites, a cozy guesthouse in the center of town which had all the amenities you need as a traveler. It’s also close to the Byzantine Tower, the perfect place to walk on the beach and watch the sunset.

It’s also possible to take the 6:00 a.m. bus from Thessaloniki and ferry to Mount Athos on the same day. Most pilgrims need to pick up their Diamonitirion from the Pilgrims’ Bureau in Ouranoupoli which is close to the port.

Ferries to Mount Athos

The two most common ferries that bring pilgrims from Ouranoupoli to Daphni, Mount Athos main port, are Agia Anna and Odigitria. Both usually have two round trips per day. It’s around an hour trip to reach Mount Athos from Ouranoupoli. The boat ride is filled with stunning views of the peninsula’s walled monasteries that sit on the coastline or perched on cliffside rocks. Rising above it all is the towering summit of Athos itself.

Transportation on Mount Athos

Transportation options are limited on Mount Athos. Here is everything you need to know about moving around the Agion Oros.

The majority of roads on Mount Athos are gravel and unpaved. This makes the process of getting around the interior of Athos very slow, even between close monasteries. Sections of the road can be narrow and bumpy. Pilgrims are not permitted to drive on Mount Athos.

Buses | Karyes Center

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to get around Mount Athos is by bus. Large buses transport pilgrims between the monasteries several times a day. The buses are old but well maintained.

On the bus, you’ll notice a sea of flowing robes, long beards, and black hats called Kalymavkion (usually worn by Orthodox clergy). The bus is usually silent but sometimes a liturgy or religious chant in Greek plays softly through the speakers.

Most buses will pick pilgrims up from the port of Daphni and bring them to the capital of Karyes. There are multiple daily buses connecting Daphni to Karyes every day when the speedboats and ferries arrive.

In Karyes, you’ll find a line of different buses waiting to transport pilgrims to the various monasteries. You’ll need to know when your bus is departing, but reservations aren’t required. Fares typically range from €3 to €5. Larger monasteries have more structured bus schedules, while the others have several trips a day but are less predictable.

My best advice is to arrive in Karyes early and check when the bus for your monastery departs. Things on Mount Athos aren’t always clearly marked or perfectly organized, but if you ask for help someone will always point you in the right direction.

private Taxis and Minibuses

It’s possible to arrange private transportation outside the regular bus schedules to get around Mount Athos. A range of small minibuses, vans, and jeeps connect pilgrims to the surrounding monasteries. Some are driven by the monks themselves.

Depending on the destination, prices can range from €25 to €100. Cost is most often split between the passengers of larger pilgrim groups. To book private transportation, you’ll need to either contact your monastery or coordinate with a travel agent on Mount Athos.

Water Taxis

Private water taxis offer flexible transportation between monasteries on Mount Athos’ coastline and the port of Ouranoupoli. They’re ideal for small pilgrim groups who need to travel directly to a specific monastery by sea.

Hiking Between the Monasteries

Hiking between the monasteries on Mount Athos is a beautiful way to experience the peninsula’s quiet forests and timeless scenery. Ancient footpaths once used by monks still connect many of the monasteries, though the trails can be steep and rugged in places. If you choose to walk, bring good shoes, plenty of water, and patience. On Athos, the journey itself is part of the pilgrimage. I think hiking is the most immersive way to move around the Holy Mountain.

Requesting Accommodations on Mount Athos

To stay overnight at the monasteries on Mount Athos, you’ll need to request accommodation in advance by phone, WhatsApp, or email. You simply call or write to the monasteries you wish to visit and request a place to stay. Lodging at the monasteries is free. Don’t expect resort level amenities though, lodging on Athos is “no frills” in the truest sense. Additionally, the majority of the monasteries don’t have wifi.

There are two main types of sleeping arrangements on Athos; dormitory and cell style rooms. Dorms are large open spaces that fit multiple twin beds and are ideal for pilgrim groups. However, if you’re traveling solo like I was, there’s a chance you’ll be rooming with people from other countries who don’t speak your language.

The larger monasteries often have numerous cells, or individual sleeping quarters. Cells are narrow individual rooms that come with a twin size bed, blanket, pillow, and towel. The cell I stayed in at Dionysiou Monastery had an incredible view of the Aegean Sea. Some monasteries have more cells than others, so it’s worth asking about room types before you make your reservation.

It’s best to request accommodation at least one month in advance. During summer (June-September) or around major Orthodox feast days contact the monasteries two months in advance. You will be required to show your Diamonitirion permit upon arrival before being shown to your room.

A Typical Day on Mount Athos

Life on Mount Athos is structured around religious services, meals, and the daily rhythm of the monasteries, with the gates bolted shut at sunset until the following sunrise.

Services on Mount Athos

The day often begins around 3:00 a.m with the Orthros and the Divine Liturgy, or morning church services. A monk will walk around striking a wooden or metal semántron, a plank instrument used to wake the monastery and call everyone to prayer. The Divine Liturgy usually ends around 7:00 a.m.

Guests are not required but highly encouraged to attend the religious services. I usually woke up around 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. and the services were already well underway. Experiencing these rituals is deeply mystical and surreal. You are immersed in a spiritual landscape of dramatic frescoes, glistening icons, and hanging oil lamps. One monk originally from America explained that the design of Mount Athos churches is intended to bring a piece of heaven down to earth.

The services are entirely in Greek (or other languages if you visit one of the Slavic monasteries). A monk usually reads from the Bible or chants in a soft voice. One phrase you will hear repeatedly is Kyrie Eleison or lord have mercy, a prayerful plea that is one of the most memorable sounds of Mount Athos.

Meals in the Refectory

There are usually only two meals on Mount Athos. Pilgrims eat with monks in the refectory, or communal dining hall. The main meal is dinner after the evening church services. Everyone is seated at long tables where the food is set out. A monk reads the Bible in ancient Greek and no one talks. Everyone eats quickly and silently. When the reading is done, a bell is rung and everyone stops eating and exits the refectory.

There is a lighter morning meal usually consisting of olive oil and whole grain bread. The food on Mount Athos is simple yet incredibly nourishing. The simple and smaller portions are intended to sustain the body without distracting from prayer and contemplation, emphasizing balance and mindfulness.

Arrival at New monasteries

After the Divine Liturgy and morning meal, many pilgrims collect their belongings and depart the monastery they were staying at. The remainder of the day usually consists of traveling to the next monastery either by vehicle, boat, or hiking.

Upon arriving at a monastery on Mount Athos, a tray of pastries and Greek Coffee or traditional liquor called tsipouro, similar to the Italian grappa, is set out as a greeting. Pilgrims can enjoy the monasteries’ serene surroundings, walk the mountain trails, or speak with the monks about spiritual life.

Other things You Should Know Before Visiting athos

Here are a few other helpful tips you should consider before planning your journey to the Mount Athos.

Photos

In my experience, Mount Athos was quite strict when it came to photography. I totally understand Athos isn’t a tourist destination, but when people travel from far reaching corners of the globe, they naturally want to capture some of the special things they’re experiencing.

If you plan to take photos, be expected to stop if explicitly asked to. Otherwise, you will notice many people taking pictures despite the strict rules.

Luggage

I highly recommend bringing luggage that’s easy to move around Athos. I often had to climb steep cobble stone paths and rocky hills with a roller suitcase and leather duffle bag. It wasn’t the most convenient choice of luggage on my journey to the Holy Mountain. It’s best to travel as light as possible when coming here.

Dress Code

Conservative dress is required when traveling to Mount Athos. Long pants should be worn at all times. Shorts are not allowed. Short sleeve shirts are ok, but long sleeves are recommended. Swimming in the sea is prohibited. Closed toed shoes should also be worn when staying in monasteries.

Holy Communion

Only baptized Orthodox Christians can take communion on Mount Athos. Communion rules are stricter on Athos than in the general Greek Orthodox Church. Those wishing to receive Holy Communion should ask the guestmaster or spiritual father of the monastery for permission.

I was unaware of this rule. I didn’t know who the guestmaster or spiritual father was. When I was staying at Iviron Monastery, I was able to receive Holy Communion without any issues. At Dionysiou Monastery, the priest stopped me mid communion line and asked me to step aside. A monk who spoke English told me I had to speak to the guestmaster and wouldn’t be allowed to receive communion. This was a difficult and disappointing moment, especially since I had no issues at the previous monastery.

Karyes | Capital of Mount Athos

Karyes is the capital of Mount Athos. It’s home to administrative buildings and a few small restaurants and grocery shops. People leave their bags all over the streets as they wait to depart for the next monasteries and stroll around.

Overall, parts of Karyes feel rundown. Some of the buildings are faded and you can sometimes spot street cats fighting in narrow alleyways. There is nothing to do in Karyes except wait for the buses to take you to the monasteries and attend religious services at the Protaton Church. Everything shuts down around 8:00 p.m.

Protaton Church of the Axion Estin

Karyes’ Protaton Church is one of the most significant on all of Mount Athos. The church is built in a basilica style with arches and a vaulted ceiling. Byzantine iconography lines the walls from the floor to the ceiling with images in the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Saints and angels glare down from crevices and on columns. It’s an ancient, mystical space.

Behind the altar lies the treasure of the Protaton Church, the Axion Estin Icon. This is one of the most famous icons on all of the Holy Mountain. It features the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child who is clinging to a scroll. Meaning “she is worthy” in Greek, the Axion Estin Icon is overlaid completely in Silver.

Guesthouses in Karyes

Karyes has a few guesthouses if you wish to stay in the capital during your stay. I spent one night in Karyes and it was honestly enough. 

I would suggest staying at the newer guesthouse. There are other older guesthouses above restaurants which are outdated with few accommodations.

Monasteries I Visited on Mount Athos

Below are the monasteries I stayed at and visited during my first trip to Mount Athos.

Iviron Monastery

Iviron was the first monastery I stayed at on Mount Athos. Located on the northeast coast of the peninsula, it ranks fourth in importance among the Athonite monasteries. Founded by Georgian monks in 980, Iviron has long maintained a rich scholastic and cultural heritage, especially for the translation of the Bible and other sacred texts into Georgian. In my experience, the atmosphere at Iviron felt more strict compared to other monasteries.

Perched on a steep slope overlooking the Aegean Sea, Iviron offers panoramic views of both the coast and the surrounding forests. It also has its own harbor and shipyard. Surrounded by thick walls built to defend the monastery from invaders, Iviron looks more like a castle than a monastic community. There’s also a tall stone tower which was constructed in 1513 to spot armies and pirates.

The monastery is organized around a shaded courtyard which is encircled by the monks’ cells. At its heart stands the katholikon (main church) with elaborate Byzantine frescoes stretching from the floor to the ceiling and gilded icons encased in gold and silver adorning the walls. Just adjacent to the katholikon is the side Chapel of the Theotokos Portaitissa that houses a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. According to tradition, the icon was first seen floating above the sea in front of the monastery. The Virgin Mary instructed Iviron’s founder, St. Gabriel the Iberian, to walk on water and bring the icon ashore, where it would become a source of devotion for generations of pilgrims.

Vatopedi Monastery

Founded in the 10th century, Vatopedi is one of the most important monasteries on Mount Athos. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the monastery is said to house the actual belt of the Theotokos. The sacred relic is credited with many miracles, especially helping women struggling with pregnancy or childbirth. Since women cannot enter Mount Athos, the belt is often brought to mainland Greece for regular blessings.

The monastery grounds are expansive. Today, Vatopedi is home to around 60 to 70 monks, though it once housed more than 200 at its peak. Its library and collection of relics, icons, and biblical manuscripts are among the largest and most significant on Athos. Vatopedi contains numerous ornate chapels and even a holy well that descends deep into the earth. The refectory, or dining hall, is also especially beautiful.

Simonopetra Monastery

Thanks to its dramatic location and the stunning surroundings, Simonopetra is one of the most idyllic monasteries to explore. Winding through narrow stone corridors of the monks’ quarters feels like an adventure while the large wooden porches with wrought iron railings offer unobstructed views of the Aegean Sea. It’s the perfect place to pause and soak in the scenery. The monastery’s katholikon is especially beautiful and houses a table of relics that includes Agia Anna (mother of the Virgin Mary), Agios Panteleimon the Healer, and a piece of the True Cross of Christ.

Dionysiou Monastery

Ranking fifth in hierarchical order of the twenty governing monasteries of Mount Athos, Dionysiou Monastery may just be the most beautiful. This was the last monastery I stayed at, making it a perfect way to end my journey on the Holy Mountain.

Dionysiou Monastery is built on a steep rock that overlooks the Aegean Sea and the island of Euboea across the way. At night, you can see the lights of Euboea, while Athos remains pitch black except for the millions of twinkling stars above. The fortified monastery features some of the most striking architecture on the Holy Mountain. Its large stone bell tower resembles the spire of a castle, while the red katholikon, crowned with multiple domes, is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Inside, 16th-century Byzantine frescos and precious icons framed in gold adorn the walls. After evening services, a table is set with countless relics from across the Orthodox world for pilgrims to venerate. Meals in the refectory are simple yet incredibly nourishing.

Chapel of the Akathistos

Adjacent to the katholikon is a chapel housing a famous icon called Akathistos, or the Virgin Mary of the Akathist Hymn. According to Orthodox tradition, during an attack on Constantinople, the city’s residents held the icon over the walls and saw the Virgin Mary appear in white with her arms outstretched protecting the city. To this day, the monks of Mount Athos believe the icon has shielded Dionysiou Monastery from invasion on multiple occasions. It is also said to be one of three icons painted by St. Luke the Evangelist and is known to stream myrrh from time to time. The exterior of the church features intense imagery inspired by the Book of Revelation and the end times.

Here’s a snapshot of my four days exploring Mount Athos.

Note: Remember that your exact itinerary may differ based on which monasteries you choose to stay at and how early and how late you depart the Holy Mountain. Consider this as an example on how to plan your own schedule on Athos.

The Panagia Evangelistria Church is the most visited religious site in all of Greece. Every year, nearly two million Greeks and foreigners alike make the journey to the island of Tinos to seek the prayers and intercession of the Virgin Mary. As the ferry approached Tinos and the first glimpses of the Panagia Church came into sight, I couldn’t help but feel the unique energy the island exudes. The church is built around a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, rediscovered during the turbulence of the Greek Revolution. For more than two centuries, this sacred image has served as a spiritual symbol and patron of the Greek people. This is the Lourdes of Greece, a place where miracles and wonders of faith unfold every day.

During my four days exploring the island of Tinos, I visited the Panagia Evangelistria Church every morning. In my guide, I’ve included everything you need to know about the church: its history, traditions, and what to expect when visiting this unforgettable place.

A Brief History of Panagia Evangelistria Church

The story of the Panagia Church and the Tinos icon begins with a nun named Pelagia, who lived at the nearby Kechrovouni Monastery. The Virgin Mary appeared to her in a series of visions revealing the location of the icon buried beneath the earth. Digging began at the site of an ancient Byzantine church and the icon was rediscovered in 1823, around a year after the start of the Greek Revolution. Many believe it to be one of three icons painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. The name Panagia Evangelistria translates from Greek as the “All Holy Bringer of Good News”.

Construction of the new church began soon after and was completed in 1830. Because the rediscovery of the icon coincided with Greece’s independence struggle, many viewed it as a sign of divine blessing for the establishment of a new nation. Today, the Tinos Icon is regarded as the patroness of all of Greece. Pilgrimage to Tinos quickly became popular for those seeking the prayers and help of Panagia, or the Virgin Mary. Countless personal miracles have been attributed to the Virgin Mary on Tinos.

My Experience at the Panagia Church

The Panagia Church on Tinos is unlike anywhere else I’ve visited in Greece.

As a half Greek American traveler who was introduced to the Greek Orthodox faith by my yiayia (grandmother), visiting Tinos was a profoundly personal experience. The entire church exudes a mystical energy. There is a calm amidst the crowds and sometimes chaos of the Panagia Church. It’s a spiritual force, one rooted in the sincere faith of those who come to honor the Mother of God, offering peace in contrast to the confusion and tension of the modern world.

It was an experience I’ll always cherish, a rare opportunity to so deeply connect with my religion and culture.

Hours and Best Time to Visit

The official hours of the Panagia Church are from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm daily. However, the church really opens its doors to visitors as early as 7:00 am. This is the time I went every morning while staying on Tinos.

I recommend arriving as soon as the church opens. In the early morning you can experience the basilica in peace before the crowds arrive and even watch the sunrise from the church’s portico, a truly memorable experience. As the day continues on, the church swells with visitors from all over Greece.

Locals told me that pilgrims often walk from the port to the Panagia Church after being dropped off by the ferries and leave shortly afterward. In the later hours of the morning after the boats arrive, the line to enter the church becomes quite long as pilgrims wait to venerate the miraculous Tinos icon. If you visit early you will avoid the worst of the crowds.

Services at the Panagia Church

There is a divine liturgy or mass every day of the year at the Panagia Church. Services start as soon as the church opens and last well over 3 hours.

Most afternoons, a Paraklisis or religious service asking for the Virgin Mary’s prayers is conducted in the church. It starts around 2:00pm.

Marian Holidays at the Panagia Church

Tinos celebrates four feast days in honor of the Virgin Mary, drawing thousands of pilgrims and making it the busiest time to visit both the island and the Church of Panagia Evangelistria.

Below are the four largest Marian holidays on Tinos when the island is at its busiest.

• Discovery of the Miraculous Icon of Tinos (January 30)
• Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (March 25)
• Vision of Saint Pelagia & location of the icon revealed (July 23)
• Assumption of the Virgin Mary (August 15)

Of these, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15 is by far the most important. After the Divine Liturgy, priests and sailors carry the miraculous Tinos Icon in a grand naval procession from the Panagia Church down to the port. This moving event is one of the most significant religious celebrations in all of Greece.

visiting Panagia Evangelistria Church

The entrance to the Panagia Evangelistria Church is striking. Flanked by two large doors depicting the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, both entrances have long red carpets running from the road into the church grounds. Built in the neoclassical style, the exterior is decorated with marble from the nearby villages of Tinos. The ground in front of the church is designed with black and white rock mosaics, common artistic styles found at important churches and monasteries in the Greek islands.

The Pilgrims Path | Crawling to the Panagia Church

As an act of devotion to the Virgin Mary, many pilgrims crawl on their hands and knees all the way from the port to the Panagia Church. The journey is exhausting and those who have done it have described it as both physically draining yet spiritually moving. By crawling in humility to the Panagia Church, devout pilgrims seek repentance and the favor of the Virgin Mary before God to answer prayers.

Once the pilgrims reach the Panagia Church, they climb up the red carpets and can skip the line of people by holes built into the fence. Inside, many do not rise until they have a chance to venerate the Tinos icon.

Part of the main road up leading to the church is marked off by orange traffic cones to protect the pilgrims from cars as they slowly make their way up the hill on their hands and knees.

Candle Room

After entering through the front doors of the Panagia Church, you’ll notice a small door just to the right of the main entrance. This leads into the candle room where people light candles in prayer for relatives, friends, and loved ones who have passed away. What’s incredible about the beeswax candles at the Panagia Church is how large they are. The votive candles often stand about 6 feet (2 meters) tall. It was amazing lighting candles that were almost my height. Once lit, the candles sit in a large metal box to keep them in place. The candles do not have a price but leaving a donation is customary.

Inside the candle room are images of the life of the Virgin Mary along with copies of some of the most revered icons of the Panagia found across Greece.

Basilica of Panagia Evangelistria

After exiting the side door of the candle room, you’ll walk up the marble steps to the basilica. If you arrive early enough, you may be able to enter right away. However, as the most visited church in Greece, there is almost always a line to enter the church, which can quickly become long. To get inside the church, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. A metal fence keeps some order in the line while small openings allow crawling pilgrims to bypass it and continue their act of devotion. As you wait, the church keeps its windows open to let the sound of the liturgy spill out. Additionally, the portico of the basilica has a stunning view of the glistening Mediterranean Sea, making it a pleasant wait.

Numerous oil lamps cover the interior of the church and the walls are adorned with gold and silver gilded icons of the Virgin Mary and saints. Many of the oil lamps have unique votive objects hanging from the bottom of them. Some of them include boats and planes. Parts of the church appear dark, which is due to the limited amount of windows and a thin layer of soot from over 200 years of burning candles and incense.

Tinos Icon

The central focus of the Panagia Evangelistria Church is the Tinos icon framed in a gold case and placed in a marble throne. The image depicts the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, with the angel Gabriel holding a lily and the Holy Spirit represented as a dove. Over the years, countless pilgrims have left necklaces, rings, and other precious objects and placed them over the icon. Today, it’s no longer possible to see the image beneath these gifts of devotion.

If you bring religious items like crosses and icons, you can bless them on the Tinos icon. To do this, make the sign of the cross three times with the object directly touching the icon.

Myron (Myrrh) From the Tinos Icon

Once you enter, you’ll find two stands distributing small beeswax candles to light inside the Panagia Church. At the right hand wooden desk, you can ask the church staff for myron, or myrrh. The Tinos Icon is traditionally believed to stream myrrh or weep oil during certain times. The fragrant holy oil is believed to have healing and protective powers.

When you request the myron, the church attendant will provide you cotton swabs with the myrrh in a protective white bag. You can use the Myron to anoint yourself or your icons. Afterward, it’s advised to keep the cotton swabs in a ziplock bag and use them during times of need or to give them to a priest rather than throwing them away.

The balcony of the Church

From the altar, exit through the left door of the basilica. Just a few steps away, another open doorway leads to a steep staircase. From here, you can get an aerial view of the church’s interior from up high. I would come here every morning for 20 minutes to listen to part of the liturgy and collect my thoughts. It’s a great place to admire Greece’s most visited and sacred church from above.

Back Door of the Panagia Church

At the very back of the church, there’s a small door that’s always left open. This entrance is convenient if you want to slip into the basilica or enjoy the serene church grounds without waiting in the long line at the front gates. However, if you want to venerate and see the Tinos icon, you will have to wait in line as cutting is both disrespectful and prohibited.

Additionally, along the outer left wall of the church grounds, you’ll also find parking. From there, it’s only a short uphill walk to the back entrance.

Chapel of Zoodochos Pigi | A Church Beneath a Church

The new neoclassical basilica of Panagia Evangelistria was built right over the older Byzantine church. Originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the Zoodochos Pigi chapel is now named in honor of the Virgin Mary of the Life Giving Spring. According to tradition, this is the exact spot where the Tinos icon was rediscovered in 1823.

The three isled chapel contains the original ancient stone walls and a black and white checkered floor. Arches and vaulted ceilings connect each of the rooms. One room holds an altar for liturgies or masses, while the other two contain fonts for baptisms.

There are places to light candles, and during the major feasts of Orthodoxy, large metal bowls are put out with cut pieces of tsoureki (Greek sweet bread) for pilgrims to take.

Holy Water of Zoodochos Pigi

During my first visit to the Panagia Church, I noticed many Greeks bringing empty plastic water bottles. Inside the Zoodochos Pigi chapel, I quickly realized that the empty containers were for taking holy water home. I returned to my car, got an empty water bottle, and filled it up from the marble font.

If you’re traveling long distances like I was back home, make sure your bottle is tightly sealed. Fill it all the way to minimize air pressure changes on the plane. Remember to keep the holy water in your checked bag or airport security may make you throw it away.

Memorial to Elli

Right outside the chapel of Zoodochos Pigi stands the Memorial to Elli. The marble monument honors the Greek cruiser Elli, which an Italian submarine attacked and sank on August 15, 1940. The attack in Tinos port occurred while the crew was celebrating the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary inside the church.

In total, 9 Greek sailors died and 24 people suffered injuries. Each year, participants hold a wreath laying ceremony alongside the religious services.

Treasury

Next to the basilica stands the treasury of the church. Inside, countless gold and silver votives to the Virgin Mary, jeweled icons, and royal gifts are some of the many objects that make the treasury not just a museum but a living record of the Greek people’s devotion to the Panagia.

Icon shops and Religious Stores Around Panagia Church

There are many icon shops and stalls along the streets next to the Panagia Church. You can find religious objects such as icons, crosses, votive lamps, and kombiskini (prayer ropes). I was able to purchase an exact replica of the Tinos icon to always remember my visit.

Kechrovouni Monastery

Perched high above Tinos port and the Panagia Evangelistria Church is the Kechrovouni Monastery. This is the spot where St. Pelagia lived as a nun and received visions from the Virgin Mary instructing her where to rediscover the lost icon of Tinos. Built in the 10th or 11th century, the monastery is home to around 40 nuns, making it one of the largest nunneries in Greece.

The walled monastery is quite expansive and resembles a Greek island village with tiny streets, bright alleys, and small chapels. The cell where St. Pelagia experienced her revelations from the Virgin Mary has been turned into a shrine where visitors can light candles. There are two large churches where the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, one of which is crafted from precious Tinian marble.

Unlike the Panagia Church where more casual attire is allowed, full length pants and tops covering your shoulders is required for both men and women.

A dirt lot in front of the monastery provides parking. Kechrovouni Monastery is open daily from 7:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. and opens again from 2:15p.m. to 7:15p.m.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Tinos is from September through early October. The Mediterranean Sea is still warm and the crowds are much thinner than in July and August. May and early June is another good choice to visit Tinos since the island is still quieter with pleasant weather. The water, however, may be a bit brisk since the ocean hasn’t fully warmed up for the summer.

Religious Feasts on Tinos

There are four large feast days in honor of the Virgin Mary celebrated on Tinos. The largest is on August 15 for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The island swells with pilgrims from all over Greece who flock to the Panagia Church. While witnessing the unique festivities and energy of Tinos during the holidays is definitely an unforgettable experience, the crowds can be overwhelming, especially in Tinos Chora and port.

Below are the four largest Marian holidays on Tinos when the island is at its busiest.

• Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (March, 25)
• Vision of Saint Pelagia & location of the icon revealed (July, 23)
• Assumption of the Virgin Mary (August, 15)

Getting to Tinos

The only way to get to Tinos is by ferry. Tinos does not have an airport.

You can ferry from Athens’ Piraeus or Rafina ports. Piraeus is Athens’ main port. It has more daily connections to Tinos but the routes are slightly longer. Rafina port is closer to Athens airport and is the fastest ferry route but has fewer trips. When ferrying to Tinos, the boat will stop at other islands along the way to drop and pick up passengers.

If you’re island hopping Greece, it’s also possible to ferry from islands like Mykonos, Syros, or Andros.

Getting Around Tinos

To get around Tinos, you can either rent your own transportation or take public buses. Here’s everything you need to know about moving around the island.

Cars, Motorbikes, and Atvs

To explore Tinos fully, I definitely recommend renting a car. Having a car will allow you the freedom to explore hidden mountain villages and access remote beaches. You’ll need to show your passport and valid drivers license before picking up the keys.

I used Jason’s Rental Car on Tinos. Their customer service was excellent. They waited for my ferry to arrive at the port and drafted the contract right at the waterfront. Jason’s rental prices are some of the most fair and affordable I’ve found in Greece. Returning the car was also easy and fast.

It’s also possible to rent a motorbike or ATV on Tinos. However, it’s never recommended to rent a vehicle if you don’t know how to drive it, especially in a different country. 

Buses

Another option to get around Tinos is the buses. The public buses are operated by KTEL and connect the Chora and port with popular villages and beaches. However, bus schedules are limited outside July and August. Additionally, buses are often late, so be prepared for potential delays.

Where to Stay on Tinos

Tinos has accommodations for every type of traveler and budget. Here are some options worth considering.

Where I Stayed | Calma Azul

I stayed at an Airbnb overlooking the Mediterranean Sea close to the port. The name of the property is called Calma Azul. It is a flat on top of a three story building that has panoramic views of the ocean, the town, and the port. It has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a balcony that sits overlooking the sea. I would watch the sunrise and sunset here everyday. The views are truly unmatched.

The host, Panagiotis and his family live in the bottom two units of the building. They baked fresh bread and gave me homemade honey. They even did my laundry for me at the end of my stay. The location was perfect for exploring Tinos and the view was unforgettable. Since its close to the port, It also made for an easy arrival and departure from the island.

There is even private access to the beach with a wooden dock that leads directly into the sea.

Luxury Seeker

If you want a luxury experience on Tinos, Pnoēs is hard to beat. It’s made up of three private villas designed in Cycladic style each with a pool, garden, and stunning sea views. It has a slightly modern feel yet retains traditional architectural elements that capture the light of the Cyclades. It’s the perfect spot to splurge on comfort and exclusivity.

Mid Range Affordability

For something more affordable but still comfortable, Eleana Hotel in Tinos Town is a solid pick. It’s family run and just a short walk from the port and Chora. The rooms are simple but clean, and the location makes it perfect for exploring Tinos. The hotel also has free breakfast.

Budget Travelers

If you’re looking to save without sacrificing comfort, Tinos Chora has plenty of guesthouses and small hotels that offer an affordable place to stay. Rooms are basic but cozy with rates typically around $60–$100 per night depending on the season. Guesthouses like Porto Manolis in the Porto area offer sea views and a quiet, laidback vibe. It’s a real value for travelers on a budget.

Travel Hostel

Tinos doesn’t have a large hostel scene, however there are a few budget friendly places to stay. The Hermes Rooms is a well regarded option in the Chora. Although it’s mainly just a place to rest your head, it includes communal areas to meet other travelers, free WiFi, shuttle services, and baggage storage. The location is perfect and reviews praise the friendliness of the staff.

Below are the top things I did and places I discovered while exploring Tinos.

Churches and Monasteries on tinos

Church of the Panagia Evangelistria

The Panagia Evangelistria Church is the most visited church in all of Greece. Situated on top of what used to be an ancient temple dedicated to Dionysus, god of wine, there was also an early Byzantine church dedicated to St. John.

According to tradition, a nun named Pelagia had a vision from the Virgin Mary instructing her where to find a lost icon buried in the earth. Excavations began immediately and the icon was found in a field close to the port. The icon depicts the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary with the angel Gabriel holding a lily and the Holy Spirit depicted as a dove. Since the discovery of the icon occurred during the early stages of the Greek war of independence against the Ottomans, the image became a powerful spiritual symbol for the emerging Greek state.

The church sits in a walled compound and centers around a large three isled basilica. The icon sits inside the church and is covered with so many necklaces and other objects that it’s hard to see the original image.

Even if you’re not religious, visiting the Panagia Church offers a fascinating window into the role faith plays in modern Greek identity and culture.

Kechrovouni Monastery

Perched high above Tinos’ Chora and port is the island’s second most important religious site, the Kechrovouni (sometimes spelled Kehrovouniou) Monastery. The monastery was founded in the 10th or 11th century. In 1822, St. Pelagia had a vision from the Virgin Mary in her cell guiding her to dig up the lost icon.

The monastery is built to resemble a mini Cycladic village, with bright alleys, arches, and little chapels. St. Pelagia’s cell has now been turned into a shrine where visitors can light candles. The monastery remains an active nunnery with over 40 nuns, making it one of the largest convents in Greece.

Be sure to wear full length pants. I had swim shorts on and had to go back to my car to put on my trousers. Large tour buses full of Greek pilgrims also park right in the middle of the road which can make parking difficult, but there’s a small dirt lot right in front of the monastery’s entrance where you can park.

The catholic Influence on Tinos

Despite Tinos being the largest Greek Orthodox pilgrimage destination in all of Greece, the island also has a remarkable Catholic legacy.

Catholicism spread to Tinos during the Venetian rule which lasted from 1207-1715. The Catholics were granted protections under the Ottomans and flourished alongside Orthodox communities.

Today, Tinos has one of the largest Catholic populations in all of Greece. In villages like Xinara, Loutra, and the Komi Valley, Catholics and Orthodox live side by side, often intermarrying and celebrating holidays and feasts from both traditions. I was surprised to find out that many of the small simple white chapels in the villages and hillsides of Tinos are actually Catholic.

Tinos Chora

Almost every island in Greece centers around a Chora. Tinos Chora is the island’s transportation, economic, and cultural core. There are many cafés, tavernas, and artisan shops along with the ferry terminal. There are also several wine and cocktail bars tucked between the towns quaint and charming streets. The Panagia Church is also located on one of the hills above the Chora. A small section of the port’s road is marked off by orange traffic cones for pilgrims to crawl on their hands and knees up to the church.

One of the most enjoyable things to do in Tinos Chora is walk the entirety of the waterfront during sunrise. This is where you can see the island really start to wake up and come to life. I grabbed a freddo espresso every day and took a short morning stroll to get my body moving.

Don’t miss the War Memorial of Tinos. It has a spectacular view of the Chora, the port, and the Panagia Church along with the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. It’s just a short drive from the center of town.

Villages on Tinos

One of the most special things about Tinos is the countless whitewashed villages built into the hillsides and overlooking the Aegean Sea. Each has its own unique charm. Here are some of my favorite villages I discovered while exploring Tinos.

Agapi

The village of Agapi is one of my favorites on Tinos. Tucked between the hills and olive groves, Agape literally translates as the village of “love” in Greek. It’s centered around a charming blue domed basilica and has many narrow streets to wander and explore. It also has many of Tinos’ iconic dovecotes, the traditional stone towers used for raising pigeons.

Pyrgos

Pyrgos is often considered the most charming village on Tinos, and it’s easy to see why. The narrow streets are full of character, with marble motifs carved above doors and windows. As one of Greece’s great centers of marble production, Pyrgos has always drawn artisans and creatives who shape the island’s white stone into sculptures and works of art. Cafés and restaurants cluster around the lively main square, making it a great spot to sit and take in the atmosphere.

I also recommend visiting the Museum of Marble Crafts to learn more about how marble has influenced Tinos’ culture and economy.

Volax

With its massive granite boulders scattered across the hills, Volax feels more like a anouther planet than a Cycladic village. Whitewashed houses with flower pots on balconies sit tucked between the rocks, while cats lounge lazily in the shade.  The village has a whimsical, almost otherworldly charm, and its cozy tavernas are perfect for sipping freddo espressos or enjoying classic Greek dishes after wandering through the winding lanes.

Loutra

Loutra is one of the greenest and most peaceful villages on Tinos. As you walk its quiet streets, it almost feels as if you can still hear the laughter and commotion of the lively community that once filled the village. Loutra has deep Roman Catholic roots, with both a Jesuit and an Ursuline convent still standing today.

Komi

Komi is one of the largest and most vibrant villages in Tinos’ interior. Its narrow alleys twist between whitewashed houses, opening onto a shady main square where tall trees shelter cafés and tavernas. It’s the kind of place where locals gather, lingering over coffee or a long Greek meal, and where you can easily slip into the village’s rhythm of life for a moment.

Isternia

Perched on the hillsides of western Tinos, Isternia may have some of the best views of the Aegean Sea in all of Tinos. The village is famous for marble, and some of Greece’s most famous sculptures are from here. Marble is literally everywhere in Isternia, from ornate doorframes to elegant squares. Isternia has several cafes that overlook the ocean and provide some of the best spots to watch the sunset in all of Tinos while sipping on cocktails and Greek wine.

My favorite spot in Isternia is the Mayou All Day Bar, a cafe with sweeping views of the ocean and the nearby island of Syros. It’s the perfect place to spend a few hours just admiring the view while drinking Greek coffee.

Kardiani

Clinging to the slopes of Mount Pateles, Kardiani is one of Tinos’ most captivating villages. Natural springs run through the village, making Kardiani full of lush trees and gardens, which shade the town from the relentless Mediterranean sun. The entire town has sweeping views of the sparkling sea below.

Tinos Dovecotes

Tinos Dovecotes are one of the island’s most unique and beautiful architectural features. These stone towers, often two stories tall, are decorated with geometric patterns of triangles, diamonds, and small openings where pigeons once lived. Families competed to build the most ornate designs, turning these functional farm structures into works of art.

Today, many dovecotes still stand in fields and valleys around the island’s villages.

Beaches on Tinos

After just one visit, I was captivated by Tinos’ Beaches. I’m honestly convinced Tinos is one Greece’s best kept secret when it comes to enjoying the sea. There are countless stretches of sandy shorelines that you can have entirely to yourself. You won’t find any of the polished day clubs or organized cabanas like on nearby Mykonos, but that’s what makes Tinos so special.

The most magical thing about the beaches here is that you don’t have to have a particular one in mind. You can simply drive along the coast, stop wherever catches your eye, and lay your towel down for a day of sunbathing or swimming.

Here are a few of my favorite beaches on Tinos.

Isternia Beach

Also known as Paralia Isternion in Greek, Isternia Beach quickly became one of my favorites on Tinos. The drive down to the beach is unforgettable, with panoramic views of the sparkling Aegean Sea. It’s hard to keep your eyes on the road, especially if you’re traveling solo like I was.

The beach is a mix of pebbles and sand. It’s perfect for swimming in the gentle waves of the cove. It truly feels like a little paradise, away from the crowds and the chaos of more visited Greek Islands. You can either bring your own chair and towel or rent a daybed at Disbarko beach bar if you plan to stay for a few hours. Daybeds usually cost around €10 for the afternoon.

Agali Beach

Just a short walk from Chora, Agali Beach is one of the most convenient on Tinos. The shoreline is sandy with some small pebbles and shaded by tamarisk trees. The water is incredibly refreshing, perfect for both swimming and sunbathing while watching the small waves and ferries passing between Tinos and the surrounding islands.  The beach has an unpretentious feel to it, which is what makes it so special. There are several Greek tavernas nearby if you’re hungry after the beach.

Kolimvithra Beach

Kolimvithra is one of the most famous beaches on Tinos. Located along a wide bay on the island’s northern coast, the sand here is soft and golden with clear waters that are perfect for swimming on calm days. There is often a DJ playing music, so the beach has a more energetic vibe. The beach also has large mushroom shaped umbrellas to help protect from the bright Mediterranean sun.

Pachia Ammos Beach

Pachia Ammos is one of the widest beaches on Tinos, with soft golden sand that stretches along a quiet bay. The water is shallow and perfect for swimming, making it a great spot for families or anyone who wants a day to relax by the sea. There are a few small tavernas nearby, so you can grab a fresh Greek salad or iced coffee without leaving the beach.

Agios Sostis Beach

Agios Sostis is a small, peaceful beach tucked away in the southern coast. It’s mostly sand with some areas with small pebbles. The water is crystal clear and calm. The beach has a very lowkey vibe and is shaded by tamarisk trees.

Eating and Drinking on Tinos

One of the best parts of visiting Tinos is the food. The island is fill of mouthwatering Greek dishes and fresh seafood, and the prices are often much more affordable than neighboring islands. There are also many restaurants serving international cuisines as well.

Below are a few of my favorite spots to eat in Tinos.

Gyros

You simply cannot come to Greece without having a gyro. Two of my favorite gyro spots on the island are both in the chora and happen to be right next to each other, Sikoutris and Edesma. Both also serve Greek salads, souvlaki skewers, and beer.

Take your gyro and walk to the waterfront to enjoy your sandwich by the sea.

Pizza

Two of my favorite restaurants serving pizza on the island are Pizza Tales and Pizzeria both located in the central Chora. They are also both open late into the evening and have takeaway options as well.

Seafood

Tinos has incredible seafood. I highly recommend stopping at a local Greek taverna in Ormos Panormou near the village of Pyrgos to enjoy lunch or dinner by the water.

Breakfast

My favorite breakfast spot on Tinos is a waterfront cafe called Nebo. They have amazing pancakes with maple syrup and scrambled eggs with bacon. It was enjoyable to watch the island come to life while sipping Greek coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice.

Kalimera is another favorite of mine and has a warm, homey feel serving a wide variety of Greek and American breakfast options.

The Roosters is a stylish spot right on the waterfront in Chora and also serves breakfast and drinks in the evening.

Grab a pastry and go

One of my favorite things to do when I needed a quick meal but just wanted to go out exploring was grab a pastry and a coffee to go.

Some of the best pastries you can get on the go include Koulouri (a Greek bagel), Tirpopita (cheese pie), or Spanakopita (spinach pie). However, my favorite Greek pastry is tsoureki, a sweet twisted bread often made during easter. I stopped by Vidalis Bakery to pick up a small loaf and freddo espresso to start my morning. It’s located on Panagia Street leading up to the church.

Antilalos Coffee Shop

Tinos has many unique and eclectic coffee shops. My favorite on the island is called Antilalos. It’s a three story coffee shop and bookstore selling a variety of used and second hand books from every genre. The entire coffee shop has an artistic, almost dreamlike atmosphere. The upper floors are lined with bookshelves from the ceiling to the floor.

There are two patios outside which are the perfect place to stay for a while and enjoy coffee with a good book. At night, Antilalos becomes a wine bar, and is the perfect cozy spot to relax and catch up with friends. It’s a welcoming environment that blends the charm of a bookstore with the warmth of a café.

Nightlife on Tinos

The nightlife on Tinos is much more relaxed in comparison to nearby Mykonos, but you can still find crowded streets with cozy tavernas, small cocktail bars, and wine lounges. You won’t experience loud club music here, but you’ll find a laid back vibe to chat and enjoy the night.

If you walk the streets of the Chora at night, you will find many lively corners to relax, mingle, or dance the night away. Some of the best bars to enjoy the vibes of the port at night include Agkinara Apertivobar, Sibylla Club, and Santiago.

There is no place in Greece quite like Agios Minas Beach.

The island of Karpathos has some of the best beaches in all of Greece. My time spent reading, writing, and swimming in the warm waters  of the Mediterranean Sea are some of my most cherished memories of otherworldly Karpathos.

Hidden away in a remote cove is Agios Minas Beach. Identified only by a withered road sign, the barren road to Agios Minas Beach is easily missable. Agios Minas Beach was my favorite beach on Karpathos, but getting to the beach was quite the adventure. If you make the journey, you will be gifted with one of the best beaches in Greece, possibly all to yourself.

Getting to Agios Minas Beach

Driving to Agios Minas

Agios Minas Beach is in the North of Karpathos. Most people who visit Karpathos stay in the south of the island near the main town of Pigadia. To get from the areas around Pigadia to Agios Minas beach, follow the road taking you North towards the village of Olympos. The village of Olympos is the most fascinating village on Karpathos. It has remained unchanged for centuries. Additionally, it’s only a 30 minute drive to Agios Minas Beach making it easy to visit both in a day.

As you drive up the highway, you will see road signs directing you to Olympos, so you know you will be going in the right direction. Additionally, download offline Google Maps for the island of Karpathos and put in Agios Minas Beach to make sure you are going in the right direction. As you drive, you will see some of the most breathtaking views of your life. The road has stunning views of the vast Aegean Sea below and passes through a dense mountain pine reserve. It is unlike any terrain I have experienced elsewhere in Greece, a true Mediterranean paradise.

It will be hard to keep your eyes on the road as you admire the unforgettable views of the sea, the pines and the breathtaking jagged mountains.

As you continue North, you will begin to see Agios Minas Beach start to appear on the road signs before Olympos. There will eventually be a right arrow off the main highway leading to the small barren path down to Agios Minas beach.

The Rugged Road Down to Agios Minas Beach

To be fully transparent, the road down to Agios Minas is wild. The road is unpaved, steep, and has many curves. It is more appropriate to describe the 3 kilometer (1.8 mile) gravel stretch as a dirt path rather than a road. The road is not wide enough for two cars to pass, so I was praying that I did not meet another car coming from the opposite direction. Driving out of Agios Minas beach will be harder as it is uphill.

Evaluate Your Rental Car

I highly suggest evaluating the state of your rental car before driving down to Agios Minas Beach. I was able to make the drive down to the beach in a small Nissan sedan, but it was a challenge (especially leaving). Honestly, renting a 4×4 would be best in visiting this beach and exploring other off road destinations in Karpathos.

Make Sure You Have a Full Tank of Gas

Fill up your car with gas before visiting Agios Minas beach. As I began my drive into the beach, I realized I only had a quarter tank of gasoline left. This made the drive down especially stressful as I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to make it out of the beach and back to Pigadia. The tavern owners reassured me that I had enough gas to circle the island twice, but I still recommend visiting this beach on a full tank to reduce any additional concerns. They were incredibly friendly people and were very interested on my decision to solo-travel Karpathos and the Greek islands as a Greek American,

Once you have driven the worst of the gravel road, you will be greeted by the friendly sight of an olive groove and two Greek taverns. There is also a tiny hill with a chapel on top that offers an incredible view, which I think is a good place to start.

Getting to Agios Minas Beach by Boat

It’s also possible to get to Agios Minas Beach by boat. This may be a good option for those who don’t want the stress of the drive but still want to experience the beauty and serenity of the remarkable beach. There are regular cruises and private boat tours that take you to Agios Minas directly from Pigadia and Diafani. The cost can vary greatly depending on the time of year, but prices usually run from €900 to €1,200. Keep in mind this is for a full day of exploring, with boats usually leaving at 8:00 a.m. and retuning to port at 5:00 p.m. or later.

Chapel of Agios Minas

Agios Minas beach is named for the chapel on the hilltop overlooking the cove dedicated to St Minas. Born in Egypt in 285 AD, St Minas is an important saint in the Greek Orthodox church who served in the Roman army and was martyred for practicing Christianity.  Services are held on the saints feast day.

The chapel inside is humble but a peaceful place to light a candle. There are also traditional Karpathian embroideries covering the icons, further showcasing local island culture.

Outside the chapel is an incredible view of the beach cove of Agios Minas beach. Make sure to take many pictures of the stunning view below!

The Beach

Agios Minas Beach is hands down my favorite beach in Karpathos. One of the nicest things about my trip to Agios Minas Beach is that I had it almost entirely to myself. There were four other travelers at the beach besides the tavern owners.

Agios Minas is a black sand, pebble beach. It has good waves that aren’t too powerful. Because of this, it’s the perfect palace for swimming. With the chapel on the hill, the rugged mountainous surroundings, and the olive groove behind, Agios Minas feels like a hidden Greek oasis. I spent several hours reading, writing, swimming, and relaxing under an umbrella as I watched the waves hitting the shoreline.

You can rent a comfortable beach lounge with an umbrella from the tavern owners or bring a towel and enjoy the beach. The beach lounge was actually quite comfortable so I would suggest renting a chair. It cost around 15-20 euros but I thought it was worth it.

I would recommend spending  a couple of hours at the beach.

The Taverns

After a full day of swimming and sunbathing at Agios Minas, I was very hungry. Luckily for me, there are two Taverns a step away from the shoreline. I ate at Taverna Sotiris. The fresh calamari was especially good. It was the most perfect and authentic Greek food. I am sure the other tavern right across from Taverna Sotiris is just as good. After all, you can’t go wrong with a traditional home cooked Greek meal.

I visited the Akrotiri Peninsula on a day trip from Chania Town as part of my 10-day road trip throughout Crete. I’ve included the most important places to visit on the peninsula so you can make the most of your time exploring this fascinating corner of Crete

Is the Akrotiri Peninsula Worth Visiting

The Akrotiri Peninsula is one of the most extraordinary places in Crete’s Chania Region. I definitely attained a deeper understanding of Crete’s past by exploring the peninsula. The Akrotiri Peninsula features breathtaking gorges, caves, and hikes that offer mesmerizing views of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a place rooted in the natural elements. 

Due to the mesmerizing yet rugged terrain, the Akrotiri Peninsula was home to many early Christian hermits. The monks sought prayer and contemplation in the naturally protected landscapes of the peninsula. As Christianity spread throughout the island, many prominent monasteries emerged. Several on the peninsula would become renowned and some of the most famous in Greece. The Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) and the Gouverneto monasteries remain well-preserved and are still active. 

There are also several iconic beaches in the area. Additionally, the Akrotiri Peninsula contains the Venizelos Graves. This is one of the most important places in the history of Crete and modern Greece. The ancient ruins of Aptera are fascinating to explore and are a short car ride away from the peninsula.

Even if you have a short stay on Crete, I would allot one full day to explore all the Akrotiri Peninsula has to offer.

History of the Akrotiri Peninsula

The cultural significance of the Akrotiri Peninsula stretches back to the ancient Minoan civilization. This is when the Minoans first established temples and shrines in the many secluded valleys and gorges of the peninsula.

The arrival of Christianity on Crete made the rocky Akrotiri Peninsula a refuge for monks seeking prayer and freedom to practice their religion. However, it wasn’t until Byzantine rule that the Akrotiri Peninsula evolved into a center of monasticism and Orthodox Christian spirituality. In fact, many monasteries became important both for spiritual means along with their economic capabilities. Most notable is the production of olive oil and wine by the monks of the peninsula.

During the Venetian and Ottoman control of Crete, the Akrotiri Peninsula remained strategically important due to its close proximity to Chania Town. Like in earlier times, Cretan rebels sought refuge in the rough and remote conditions of the peninsula. It was the perfect place to nourish the wild Cretan identity and organize plans for a deliverance of foreign occupation.

In recent times, the Akrotiri Peninsula played an important role in the Cretan struggle for independence and unification with broader Greece. Today, the cultural, spiritual, and natural wonders of the Akrotiri Peninsula make it one of the most special places to connect with Crete’s history and beauty.

How to get to the Akrotiri Peninsula

If you arrive in Chania by air, you will land at the Chania International Airport which is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula. There are many rental car options at the airport.

It’s around a 30-minute drive to get from the center of Chania Town to the Akrotiri Peninsula. All of the roads were in excellent condition. There are also buses running from Chania to the peninsula.

Tips for visiting

There are several things to keep in mind while planning your visit to the Akrotiri Peninsula. Firstly, remember to pack for your day. I spent the majority of my day outside hiking, visiting the archaeological sites, and soaking up the sun at the pristine beaches. Because of this, I packed lots of water and snacks to keep me going throughout my day.

Remember to dress appropriately when visiting the monasteries. It’s customary to have the knees and shoulders covered when entering. I brought a pair of sweatpants that I could easily take off afterward. Bring close-toe shoes for the hikes and walks in the ancient ruins and olive groves. Also, don’t forget a bathing suit and towel for the Seitan Limania and Stavros beaches.

When to visit the Akrotiri Peninsula

As Europe’s southernmost frontier, Crete gets sweltering summers. However, late May through early June and September boasts pleasant weather and warm seas. You’ll also be able to visit the most remarkable places on the peninsula with significantly lighter crowds.

When I visited the Akrotiri Peninsula I started my day early. This allowed me to enjoy the most important monasteries and sites before many of the tour buses arrived.

Monasteries – A Place of Worship not a Tourist Attraction

Unfortunately, the monasteries of the Akrotiri Peninsula among other famous places of worship on Crete allow tour buses. The influx of tour buses disrupts the energy and feel of the island’s monasteries, many of which are celebrated for their spiritual significance on Crete and the entire Greek Orthodox Church. Additionally, it seems like the tour companies do not emphasize the appropriate behavior for the groups visiting the monasteries. Luckily, I was able to fully experience the monasteries both as a traveler and as an Orthodox Christian pilgrim before 3 large tour buses arrived at the gates.

Where to stay

I visited the Akrotiri Peninsula on a day trip from Chania Town. It’s only a 30-minute drive from the center of the Old Port of Chania. The roads on the peninsula were in excellent condition. Furthermore, the peninsula is heavily militarized with a NATO and American naval base, so the security in the area is remarkable.

How long will you need

A full day gave me plenty of time to explore all the noteworthy sites of the Akrotiri Peninsula and the nearby archaeological site of Aptera.

What to See on the Akrotiri Peninsula

Venizelos Graves

My first stop on my day trip to the Akrotiri Peninsula was the Venizelos Graves. 

This is one of the most significant places in the history of modern Crete. Sitting on a hilltop overlooking Chania Town, Venizelos Graves offers stunning views of the entire Old Port and dazzling views of the Mediterranean Sea. This is one of the best places to experience sunrise or sunset in Chania.

The Venizelos Graves is the final resting place of one of the most renowned prime ministers in all of Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos. Commonly known as the “maker of modern Greece”, Venizelos played a significant role in the liberation of Crete and the island’s unification with Greece. During his seven terms as prime minister, he brought many territories, including Macedonia, Epirus, and the Aegean islands back under Greek sovereignty. Celebrating the work of Venizelos, Greece named the Athens International Airport in his honor. The grounds also include the grave of his son, Sofoklis Venizelos, who served as prime minister of Greece from 1943 to 1952.

The grounds include a small chapel dedicated to the Prophet Elias and a place to light candles. Additionally, there is a bronze statue of Spyros Kagialedakis. A national hero in Greece, Kagialedakis used his body to uphold the Greek flag during the Cretan revolution of 1897.

Despite the scenic views and phenomenal sunsets you can experience at the Venizelos Graves, the sight carries huge national and patriotic significance not just to Cretans, but to all Greeks, something often overlooked by visitors.

The Holy Monasteries of Akrotiri Peninsula

Agia Triada

The Agia Triada Monastery was my favorite monastery I visited on Crete. The grandeur of the Agia Triada monastery was on full display on my drive into the grounds. Large cypress trees line the road and endless olive groves emerse the walled, tangerine-colored monastery. I ascended a steep, narrow set of stairs past the orange walls to the entrance adorned by a set of columns and an icon of the Holy Trinity. The monastery chapel is in the shape of a cross and has 5 orange domes.

Founded by two Venetian monks who converted from Catholicism to Orthodoxy, the monastery feels like an ornate jewel box and showcases the beautiful harmony between the Greek and Italian architectural influences. Inside, I found vividly painted Greek Orthodox icons, many of the saints and holidays I was well acquainted with. Some of the most beautiful icons are large murals of the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the assumption of the Virgin Mary.

I visited on Holy Saturday, the day before Orthodox Easter, and found bay leaves still scattered all over the floor from the earlier divine services. The iconostasis, the wall of icons between the sanctuary and the altar, has many religious images painted with the customary gold-leaf background. Moreover, a large chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome which represents the symmetry of the universe. I saw a monk enter and swing the enormous chandelier, which proceeded to spin around the room. This is done on important feast days of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Tips for Visiting Agia Triada Monastery

To get the best experience and pictures of the holy monastery, I suggest visiting early before the tour groups arrive.

After exiting the chapel of the Holy Trinity, I took a staircase up to the roof of the orange domes to view the monastery complex from up high. I wandered around the grounds past the many monk’s cells. The thing that stuck out to me the most about the Holy Trinity monastery is the remarkable architecture, so unique to Crete and its heritage.

The monastery also includes an icon shop and a small market outside the walls which sells olive oil products and wines produced by the monks. 

Gouverneto Monastery

A ten-minute drive from the Agia Triada Monastery is the Gouverneto Monastery. Known as the Lady of Angels, this walled monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary sits high above the sea and is one of the oldest on the Akrotiri Peninsula. This is a very active and growing monastic community. Visitors may not take photos, smoke, or wear inappropriate clothes while entering. The interior of the monastery includes a beautiful garden with many exotic plants and flowers. I also met several friendly cats who wanted to be petted and jumped on my lap.

When I entered the chapel, there was a divine liturgy taking place with many locals from the surrounding villages in attendance The monastery church has many vivid Byzantine icons that line the walls from the floor to the ceiling. I sat to enjoy the spiritual setting as the Greek monks chanted an eerie “Kyrie Eleison” or lord have mercy and clouds of incense filled the sanctuary.

Hike to the Abandoned Katholiko Monastery 

After exiting the Gouverneto Monastery, I continued on a dirt path past a makeshift gate to the entrance of the hike to the Katholiko Monastery. This is believed to be one of the first monasteries on the Akrotiri Peninsula and on Crete. The path down to the Katholiko monastery is well paved with cobblestone. The entire hike boasts jaw-dropping views of the Mediterranean Sea. Being surrounded by so much untouched natural beauty was very cleansing.

On the way to the ruins of the Katholiko monastery, I stopped at the Cave of the Bear. Right off the main path, locals named the cave for a large stone that resembles a tall bear.

The Katholiko Monastery was founded in the 11th century by St. John the Hermit, one of the fathers of Cretan monasticism. Located in the Avlaki Gorge, the monastery is now completely abandoned. The complex comprises a brick bridge, the old chambers of the Monks, and a church built into the cave.

It took me about an hour each way to walk to reach the ruins of the Katholiko Monastery. The walk down was spectacular. However, the walk-up was more challenging. Overall, this was one of my favorite hikes on Certe due to the remarkable scenery and the historical significance.

Beaches on the Akrotiri Peninsula

Despite the active monasteries and the NATO military bases, the Akrotiri Peninsula is also known for several of the most renowned beaches in Western Crete.

Seitan Limania

Tucked away between a steep gorge is the mesmerizing Seitan Limania. This unspoiled and naturally protected beach hides in a rocky cove and has dramatic landscapes and bright blue waters.

Beware, the hike down to Seitan Limania was quite treacherous. Only a makeshift string railing gave me anything to hold on to while hiking down to the beach. Once I made it down to the beach, the atmosphere was truly magical. I visited at sunset and there was only one other couple on the beach along with a family of mountain goats. It was one of my favorite beaches on the island.

Stavros Beach

Another popular Cretan beach on the Akrotiri Peninsula is Stavros Beach. The beach is popular for its quiet and peaceful surroundings and its mountain views. Located near the village of Stavros, this charming beach is shaped like a horse-shoe and has the backdrop of a large rocky hill. It is famous in Greek culture for the filming of the beach scenes of the movie Zorba the Greek.

Make a Visit to the Archaeological Site of Aptera

Only a 30-minute drive away from the Akrotiri Peninsula is the Archaeological site of Aptera. This is one of the most important ancient sites on Crete besides the Palace of Knossos. Aptera has many well-preserved ancient ruins. Old Greek walls, Roman houses, and a semi-circular amphitheater overlooking Crete’s majestic White Mountains reminded me just how old civilization on the island actually is. An expansive olive grove surrounds the ancient ruins, adding to Aptera’s mystery. I had lunch at the Cretan Corner in the modern village adjacent to the Archaeological site of Aptera. The food was very flavorful and it was one of my favorite Tavernas in Crete. Equally enjoyable is the view of the mountains which the restaurant overlooks.

Everywhere I went in Chania Town I found historical and cultural relics that recited stories of the city’s long and diverse past. The invading armies are a distant memory and Chania has adapted to the changes of the modern world. The small port city welcomes millions of visitors every year from around the globe.

A Brief History of Chania Town

Minoan Founding and Development

Founded 5,000 years ago by the Minoan Civilization, Kydonia (Chania) quickly became one of the most powerful city-states in the region. This makes Chania Town one of the oldest settlements in all of Europe. Benefiting from its unique location, Chania grew as a center of commerce and trade. Emperor Augustus Caesar further emphasized the city’s importance by declaring Chania an independent state and granting it the right to its own currency. Chania Town thrived under Byzantine rule until the Arabs conquered Crete and razed the city to the ground, an occupation that lasted over a hundred years.

Venetian and Ottoman Occupation

Venice arrived in 1204 and forever changed the future of Chania (along with the rest of the Cretan coast). Venetian occupation of Crete lasted for over 400 years and the island became the naval superpower’s most important colony. The period of Venetian rule saw several rebellions, none of which were very successful. As long as Venice respected the local way of life and Orthodox practices, the Cretans generally complied.

The Ottomans conquered Crete in 1645 following the rapid acquisition of territories and islands in the Aegean Sea. The ensuing two centuries of Turkish rule in Chania Town saw times of both peace as well as conflict between different communities. The Ottomans turned all the Catholic churches built by Venice into mosques, and the city introduced fountains and baths to accommodate Islamic purification and prayer rituals. The Ottomans restored the title of the Orthodox bishop of Chania, a privilege lost under the Venetians, and granted greater rights to the Orthodox majority.

The relationship between the Muslims and Greeks deteriorated during the revolts of 1770 and the 1821 Greek revolution on the Peloponnesos. Hostilities escalated well into the 19th century until Crete unified with the rest of Greece in 1913. The Greek flag was raised over the island for the first time in the Old Port of Chania.

WWII and Rebirth

The German aerial bombings during WWII significantly damaged Chania Town. Tragically, the historic Jewish population of Chania was decimated during the atrocities of the Holocaust. After the war, the old city began rebuilding and was declared a historical and cultural monument in 1965.

The port city of Chania has always been a melting pot and cultural mosaic. The Orthodox, Catholic, Jewish, and Islamic communities residing in the city over the centuries have contributed to the city’s multifaceted and cosmopolitan history, and serve as a testimony of multiculturalism and coexistence. 

How to get to Chania Town

You can get to Chania either by plane or by ferry. Chania has an international airport with multiple daily flights from Athens. Most flights are with Greece’s national carrier, Aegean and Olympic airlines. Flights from Athens are affordable and are usually less than an hour. Additionally, there are also regular flights to Chania from other European cities.

You can also ferry to Chania. There are roughly 100 ferry crossings from Piraeus Port in Athens to Chania Town every week. It’s also possible to ferry from one of the other nearby Greek islands, such as Santorini or Rhodes, or from ports in the Peloponnesos. The Port of Souda is where the ferries arrive and is a 20-minute car ride into Chania Town.

How many days should you spend in Chania Town

One full day was sufficient time for me to explore the major highlights of Chania and discover the different neighborhoods of the city. Although I only spent one full day in Chania Town, I stayed 4 nights in the Old Port as my base for exploring Western Crete. I continued getting to know Chania Town by wandering the cobblestone streets, trying different restaurants, and enjoying the evening ambience of the Old Port.

Best time to visit Chania Town:

Due to its captivating atmosphere and its close proximity to the many natural and historical wonders of Crete, Chania is one of the most visited cities in Greece. During the months of July and August, the city swells with tourists. The locals have a friendly attitude and the city is known for being very welcoming to travelers. This is rooted in the Greek cultural concept of philoxenia (love of the foreign).

However, Chania, like so many cities in the world, suffers from the rising problem of over-tourism. Because of this, I would recommend visiting during the “shoulder season” which spans from late May though early June and continues again in September. The weather will be pleasant and the sea will still be warm.

Greek Orthodox Easter in Chania Town

One of the most special and lively times to visit Chania Town is during Orthodox Easter. Greek Orthodox Easter is the biggest holiday in Greece and the atmosphere in Chania Town was festive and exciting. In my opinion, this is the best possible time to visit Chania Town as it provides an unforgettable cultural and spiritually immersive experience. You really feel the connection to the rich traditions during the services and events that take place during Orthodox Holy Week.

How to get around chania town

get to know the city by walking

The best way to get around Chania Town is by walking. Walking allowed me to discover hidden corners of the city and get the fullest feel for Chania’s character and history. Moreover, much of the old town is off-limits to cars, making parking extremely limited in the historic center.

Alternatively, there is also a public bus route that connects many of the neighborhoods of Chania. I can’t vouch for the reliability of the bus, but I have heard mainly positive reviews.

I rented a car in Chania before embarking on my 10-day road trip in Crete. Renting a car gave me the greatest flexibility to see the most important sights in the Chania Region of Crete such as the Akrotiri Peninsula and Balos Beach Lagoon.

Parking in Chania Town

Parking is extremely limited in Chania Town. One place I frequently found parking was Talos Square, which is right next to the Old Port and the center of town. You can park anywhere you find a spot. It’s free game.

What to do in Chania Town:

The best place to start discovering what Chania Town is really all about is the Old Port. The Old Port of Chania is mesmerizing. Here you can find some of the most important landmarks of the city including the Venetian fortress, the orange-domed Mosque of the Janissaries (Mosque of Kuck Hasan Pasha), and the Egyptian lighthouse.

The Old Port has many restaurants and cafes that line the waterfront. Sintrivani Restaurant and Coffee Bar has excellent breakfast and lunch and an amazing view of the entire harbor. I ate here multiple times during my stay to enjoy the sunrise and people-watch. At night, the port area becomes alive with an extensive bar and nightlife scene.

Past the Mosque of the Janissaries following the waterfront, is the old Venetian Shipyards, an incredible relic of almost 400 years of Venetian control of Crete. At the end of the shipyards is the cozy Chania Sailing Club Restaurant, which has excellent views of the shipyards and delicious pizza. After being energized by a good meal at the Sailing Club, continue on the water break for breathtaking views of the sea and then continue walking up to the base of the lighthouse. This is a great spot to take in a view of the entire port along with the White Mountains.

The Municipal Market of Chania sells many local Cretan products and souvenirs. It serves as a modern point of commerce and was established on the foundations of a medieval Venetian fortification. Unfortunately, when I visited Chania Town it was closed for restorations and is undergoing massive repairs. Just down the street is Funky’s Pizza, an excellent place to grab a slice if you need a quick meal. The pizza is very good. Seating is limited but there is room for standing, which is what most of the locals do. Monogram Roasters Coffee has an amazing iced espresso and sells coffee beans that you can bring home. You do not want to miss this coffee spot. It has a special atmosphere and buzz to it and has amazing coffee.

The Greek Orthodox faith and traditions are important to the fabric of daily life in Chania. Throughout centuries of foreign control and occupation, the Greek Orthodox religion nurtured the wild Cretan spirit and grounded local identities during confusing times. There are many impressive churches and cathedrals in Chania. Some were built in the Byzantine form, while others were designed in the Venetian style, inspired by worship in Catholic temples. There are countless churches and chapels with hidden spiritual and artistic treasures. It would be impossible to discover them all on one trip. Below are some of the best churches in Chania Town to include in your itinerary.

Presentation of the Virgin Mary Metropolitan Cathedral

The Presentation of the Virgin Mary Cathedral (Eisodion of the Theotokos) is one of the oldest places of worship in Chania. The first church was built during the 11th century. In 1695, the Ottomans converted the cathedral into a soap factory. After the Orthodox Christian population of Chania pleaded with the sultan to return the cathedral to its original spot and provide a larger place to worship, the sultan commanded the reconstruction of the cathedral church in 1850.

The cathedral has a simple yet pleasant exterior. Inside, the church has many treasures; beautiful painted icons and hanging olive oil lamps that illuminate the interior. The iconostasis, the divider between the altar and the rest of the church, has many icons of Jesus and Mary which are completely plated in silver. A fresco of Jesus floats above the alter. He sits in state of blessing. In his lap is the bible and around him are the authors of the four gospels.

The locals also refer the three-aisled church as the “Trimartyri” in Greek. The right aisle is dedicated to the Three Holy Hierarchs who protected the Greek language and theology. The left aisle is dedicated to St. Nicholas to commemorate the nearby church that was converted into a mosque. The central aisle is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary at the Temple in Jerusalem. Together, the church and its patronage are a manifestation of Orthodox belief and ideas.

Check out the Metropolis Byzantium Gallery store to the right of the church entrance. The shop sells religious gifts and icons painted in the Cretan style (emphasizing blue and red tones).

Assumption Catholic Cathedral

Across the street is the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption, easily identified by its blue bell tower. Although the current church was built in 1879, a notable Catholic community has always existed in the port since Venetian times. The church has a mix of Neoclassical and Renaissance architectural influences. The interior is adorned with traditional Catholic imagery. The cathedral also features a small courtyard garden and a Cretan folk museum. The cathedral holds weekly masses and celebrations on feast days.

Church of Agios Nicholas

The Church of Agios Nicholas is a complex building. Located in the Splantzia neighborhood, the church sits in what used to be the Turkish quarter of the city. The church was originally founded by the Dominican Order and was converted into a mosque and armory during Ottoman times. It served as the largest functioning mosque in the city. A large two-balconied minaret was erected for the call to prayer to be conducted 5 times a day.

In 1928, the Orthodox Church reconsecrated the building for Christian worship and built a bell tower. They left the minaret intact to stand alongside the bell tower, giving testimony to the buildings storied past .

The church has large arches and red columns gracing the nave of the church. Ironically, the large red pillars resemble the columns at the pagan palace of Knossos. Towards the exit of the prayer hall is a staircase on the left which takes you to the upper balcony, giving you an aerial perspective of the church.

In front of the church is Splantzia Square, a lively place with many restaurants and coffee shops. It’s a great place to refuel on food and caffeine.

St Catherine and St John Hermit Church

The church dedicated to both St. Catherine and St. John the Hermit stands just a few steps away from Agios Nicholas Church. This double nave church reflects the Venetian architectural legacy of Chania. The church interior is humble and austere. It is lined with large framed Byzantine icons with the traditional gold leaf background. There is something authentic and alluring about this small church, so unpretentious on the outside but so magnificent and heavenly on the inside.

Jewish and Muslim Legacy

In Chania, the history and blend of different peoples, cultures, and religions is evident everywhere you turn. Walk around the Jewish quarter, Topanas, which had a thriving Jewish population for hundreds of years. Check out the Etz Hayyim Synagogue, in the center of the Jewish Quarter. The architecture of the synagogue is reflective of the many cultural influences that shaped Chania over the centuries. Since i visited Chania Town on Greek Orthodox Good Friday (a public holiday in Greece), I was only able to see the synagogue from outside.

You can also find traces of the former Turkish rule and the presence of the Islamic community throughout Chania. You can still see the minarets that used to cry the adhan or call to prayer. Best preserved are the minarets of Agios Nicholas church and the Ahmet Aga Minaret, which still towers over the street. The Mosque of the Janissaries is an architectural treasure with several orange domes and is unlike any other building I have seen in Greece. It currently holds modern art exhibits.

Greece deported the Cretan Muslim community from Chania after the 1923 population exchange with Turkey. Recently, there has been a small wave of Cretan Muslims seeking to return to their homeland. Many of these families have retained the Greek language. Several Cretan Muslim families have successfully returned to Chania Town, specifically from Syria.

Venizelos Graves

One of the best places to enjoy a panoramic view of Chania Town is from the Venizelos Graves. Located on a hilltop overlooking the city and the Mediterranean Sea lies the resting place of the Venizelos family. Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sofoklis Venizelos both served as prime minister to Greece. The spacious grounds include a small chapel dedicated to Profit Elias and a statue of Spiros Kagialedakis, a national Greek hero. During the Cretan struggle for independence, Kagialedakis used his own body as a flagpole to uphold the Greek flag during the shelling of Chania.

Malmo Historic Hotel: Located in the center of Old Chania, Malmo combines modern comforts and style without losing any of the history and authenticity of the neighborhood. The rooms are literally beautiful.

Scala de Faro: In the center of the old harbor, this is the most perfect spot in the city location-wise. It’s situated right on the waterfront and a stone’s throw away from the Egyptian lighthouse and the Mosque of the Janissaries.

Monastery Estate Venetian Harbor: Originally built as a 16th century mansion, this building now serves as a luxury hotel, retaining all the character and history its stones witnessed through the centuries. This hotel boasts a Turkish style spa and an indoor swimming pool.

Airbnbs

Casa Maritia: This is where I stayed during my time in Chania. This is an updated and cozy room which will give you an authentic feel for the port. It was a very relaxing place to come back to after a full day of exploring. I was able to see the sea from my private rooftop balcony along with the rest of the old city and the Cretan mountains. The views of Chania Town are unbeatable. It can accommodate 2 guests.

If backpacking and meeting like-minded travelers is more your style, there are several hostel options in Chania.

Cocoon City Hostel: A centrally located hostel with a pool and offering both dorm and private style rooms. This is great for those on a budget or solo traveling and looking to make new connections.

Boho City Hostel: Located a step away from the ocean, this hostel is best positioned for those seeking to live it up and experience Chania Town’s exciting nightlife. It is also a great option for spending time leisurely enjoying the atmosphere of the port. This three story hostel has communal dorm accommodations.

Best day trips from Chania town

Chania Town is the best base to explore the Western Chania region of Crete. All of these places are easy to visit on a day trip. Here are some of the best things to do in Chania region:

• Akrotiri Peninsula: The Akrotiri Peninsula contains some of the most famous monasteries in Greece surrounded by olive groves. Hike to an abandoned monastery where the first monks and hermits of Crete sought refuge which offers incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea. End with a visit to Seitan Limania, a hidden beach cove with rock formations and bright blue waters.

• Archaeological Site of Aptera: History buffs will love the archaeological site of Aptera. The Roman amphitheater overlooking the White Mountains is an amazing sight.
• Balos Beach Lagoon: Probably one of the most famous beaches in Greece, if not the world. With crystal clear waters, dramatic mountains, and a sandy inlet in the middle of the beach, Balos feels like it belongs on another planet.
• Elafonissi Beach: Elafonissi is famours for its bright pink sand. The waters of the beach are very warm and inviting for a swim.
• Samaria Gorge: Nature lovers won’t want to miss a visit to Samaria Gorge, the only national park in Crete. Hike through canyons filled with water and overpasses providing unforgettable views of the Cretan mountains.

After visiting Greece for the second time in the summer of 2023 on my first solo trip, I can honestly say Karpathos is one of my favorite places I have ever traveled to. Karpathos is an exciting destination for solo travelers and offers so much to discover for those looking to take a journey by themselves. Below I have included some of the top reasons I think Karpathos is the perfect island for solo travelers visiting Greece (if you will be visiting Karpathos with a group, this blog will still contain information I think you’ll find useful so tag along!)

Rent A Cat

Karpathos is a large island. It will be most convenient and enjoyable for your trip if you rent a car. Additionally, many of the sites, villages, and beaches are spread out throughout the island. Renting a car gave me the most flexibility and allowed me to explore on my own timeframe. Not to mention driving in Karpathos was an unforgettable experience. Many of the highways go through mountain passes with pine forests while offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. It was some of the most scenic drives I ever took.

Many of the main roads on Karpathos are in the mountains and have a lot of curves. Also, the highway running south to north hugs the side of the Karpathian mountain range where falling rocks are not uncommon.  Driving in Karpathos is doable and safe if you take the right precautions. Watch your speed and keep your eyes on the road (it will be hard with the mesmerizing views all around). Many of the main roads were actually in excellent condition.

Note: I added some additional rental insurance on my vehicle. I also took pictures on all sides of the car. I used Hertz and got my car at the Karpathos airport, making for an easy pickup and return.

Karpathos feels adventurous. While other mainstream islands in Greece that cater primarily to couples or families can feel slower and less exciting for solo travelers, Karpathos avoids these problems. From the moment you leave the airport, you will drive towards jagged imposing mountains that invite you to explore this otherworldly island. 

Driving Karpathos is an awesome experience. Each winding pass high in the mountains overlooks some of the most gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea. I discovered some of the most incredible beaches in Greece and visited traditional villages that have been unchanged for centuries. When exploring Karpathos, I came across unique places that captured my attention and was stopped in my tracks by herds of mountain goats crossing the road. If you are feeling extra adventurous, check out some of the hiking trails perched in the mountain peaks offering unbeatable views of Karpathos.

2.Karpathos is Safe

Another reason to visit Karpathos as a solo traveler is that the island is very safe. I felt completely comfortable and safe traveling alone on the island. Crime rates are low and petty crime like pickpocketing is rare. I felt secure walking around at night in Pigadia, the main port town. The streets closest to the water with the shops and restaurants are the best-lit. You should still take measures to protect your safety and be extra aware of your surroundings whenever you are solo traveling.

3.Karpathos is Beautiful

Karpathos is one of the most beautiful places I have visited in the world. The unique, rugged, and mysterious terrain of Karpathos is breathtaking. Lush green pine forests meet the bright blue Aegean Sea, backed by jagged, soaring mountains. The scenery of the island alone is completely alluring and remarkable.

4.Karpathos Has Some of the Best Beaches in Greece

The island has hands down some of the best beaches I have ever visited. I savored perfect sandy beaches with water so clear you can see your feet. It felt like I had been transported to the Caribbean or Maldives. There were also unforgettable black pebble shorelines located in pine reserves and hidden coves.

May to September boasts warm, inviting waters and perfect beach weather. You can either bring a towel or rent a beach lounge. Most beach lounges cost anywhere between €5-€20. I enjoyed reading, journaling, and watching the waves hitting the beach.

My favorite beaches on Karpathos are:

• Apella Beach
• Diakoftis (paradise) Beach
• Agios Minas Beach 

Note: The road down to Agios Minas Beach is completely unpaved and rugged. Be careful when entering the beach cove. If you do make the journey, you will be embraced by one of the most picturesque beaches in your life (and will have it almost completely to yourself).

5.Olympos Will Transport You Back in Time

The mountain village of Olympos was one of the highlights of my visit to Karpathos. This village is located in the north part of the island and was virtually cut off from the rest of Greece and the outside world until the last hundred years. You can feel the profound sense of history when visiting the village. Olympos has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years, with many  of the customs and traditions passed down from the ancient Doric people, ancestors of the modern villagers. Many of the inhabitants still wear traditional clothing and some women wear a headscarf unique to Karpathos. 

The entire village is built on the side of a mountain that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. The houses are colorfully painted and the streets snake around small shops where local women sell beautiful handmade crafts and local products. The atmosphere of the village is really genuine and I felt like I had stepped back in time. Olympos is truly incredible and is unlike anywhere else in Greece.

6.Karpathos Gives You a window Into Traditional Greek Culture

One of the things I appreciated most about visiting Karpathos was that the island retains a special authenticity. As a Greek American myself, the island was a great place to connect with part of my roots. Visiting Karpathos will expose you to the traditional Greek culture, often drowned out by islands that are more mainstream and over touristed. The island has special customs, traditions, and festivities that are unique to Karpathos. While the island has opened up to tourists and the world, the locals fiercely protect and cherish their cultural traditions, which helps preserve their identity in the twenty-first century.

A big part of Greek culture is the Greek Orthodox religion. When visiting Karpathos, I found many beautiful painted churches and chapels dedicated to saints or important holidays. Karpathos is estimated to have over 300 churches, chapels, and monasteries on the island. 

7.The Food is Amazing

One of the first things I look for when choosing a destination as a solo traveler is the food. Karpathos did not disappoint. Greek food is delicious, healthy, and balanced. Every meal was especially fresh and wholesome. Karpathos has many dishes that are unique to the island, especially seafood. It also has special variations of pastries like Spanakopita and Baklava that I have not seen anywhere else in Greece.

Karpathos has several restaurants that serve other cuisines. Harper All Day Cafe & Restaurant has amazing American breakfast with pancakes, scrambled eggs, and a great coffee bar. It’s also right on the water in the main town of Pigadia and is a great place to people watch. I went back multiple times during my stay before starting my day.

8.Karpathians are Helpful and Kind 

The residents of Karpathos (Karpathians) are incredibly friendly, humble, and kind people. Like the rest of Greece, the Karpathians have opened up their island home for visitors around the world to experience and enjoy; rooted in the Greek cultural concept of Philoxenia (love of the foreign). The locals are kind and genuinely curious about the world outside of Karpathos. 

The locals were also extremely thoughtful. They gave me many suggestions on where to visit and provided detailed directions. Those who visit Karpathos will always remember the interactions they have with the islanders.

9.English is Widely Spoken 

Another bonus for solo travelers visiting Karpathos is that English is widely spoken. I honestly don’t recall an interaction on the island where I wasn’t able to communicate with the locals in English. Even in some of the most remote parts of the island, the inhabitants still spoke some English. I never really felt that there was a language barrier. Because of Greece’s dependance on tourism, English is now taught in many schools. Road signs and restaurant menus are in both English and Greek.

10. Accommodations for Every Budget

Karpathos has accommodation options for every traveler’s preference and budget. While there are fewer hostel options on Karpathos, you can find cheap hotels and guest rooms along with boutique hotels and luxury villas. 

Each solo traveler has their own standards and comfort level when it comes to accommodations. Make sure to check all details of where you will be staying. I splurged a little on accommodations and stayed at an amazing property that overlooked the port of Pigadia and the mountains of Karpathos called Istia Luxury Villas. The property was gated and made me feel extra safe as a solo traveler. The layout was modern and luxurious and maintained a clean, white, minimal theme throughout the property that was very calming. There is even an ancient temple to Aphrodite on the grounds of the property. It also has an infinity pool with floating daybeds that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. It was worth every penny.

11. Karpathos is One of the Best Kept Secrets in Greece

Maybe you have figured out reading this far into the blog, Karpathos is one of the best-kept secrets in Greece. With stunning and dramatic scenery, amazing food, top-tier beaches, and a rich authentic culture, Karpathos is truly off the beaten path when it comes to Greece. It is remarkably less touristy than islands like Santorini, Mykonos, and even nearby Rhodes. Because of this, Karpathos has kept its authentic charm and is a genuine, wholesome, unpretentious place to experience as a solo traveler. I would just suggest visiting soon before it blows up as Karpathos has started to gain the attention of the travel community.

12.Karpathos Will Give You a New Perspective of the World

Lastly, I think Karpathos is an amazing solo travel destination because visiting the island will give you a new perspective of the world. Such a beautiful, unique, and well-preserved place fosters new perspectives and sets the backdrop for self-growth and discovery on your trip.
