Crete is one of the most wild and untamed places in all of Greece. Located at the southern edge of the country and surrounded by the endless blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is Greece’s largest island. Crete has always had a fiercely independent and resilient identity throughout its long history. It has unique traditions and customs that differ from the other regions and islands of Greece. Due to its location, it’s significantly warmer than the rest of Greece and its geography ranges from expansive olive groves, towering mountains, and exotic beaches. Visiting Crete truly feels like an adventure.

One of my favorite things about Crete is that there’s plenty of room to spread out, soak in the diverse scenery, and connect with the Greek culture and people on a deeper level. Even several weeks here won’t feel like enough. It would take a lifetime to fully appreciate all of Crete’s treasures.

A Brief History of crete

The history of Crete goes back to the earliest human settlements of both Greece and modern Europe. The Minoan Civilization was the first great power on Crete. They established flourishing port cities at Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania. The Minoans also built the expansive and lavish Palace of Knossos, famous in Greek mythology for the legend of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth.

Following the Minoans, Crete came under the control of the Mycenaean Empire, expanding the island’s cultural connection with the broader Greek world. The Roman and Byzantine civilizations both left their mark on Crete, followed by nearly 500 years of Venetian rule. The years of Venetian rule greatly shaped Crete. Although there was economic prosperity, the Greek Orthodox majority constantly resisted Venice.

The Ottoman Empire occupied Crete for nearly two hundred years. During this time, mosques with towering minarets transformed the skyline of Crete’s ports, many of which still stand today. The Cretans eventually joined the Greek Revolution that started in mainland Greece. Crete’s unification with Greece was finalized in 1913.

Why Visit Crete

Crete is one of my favorite islands in all of Greece. It’s massive, with four distinct regions that vary greatly in terrain and history. There are endless natural wonders, historical landmarks, cultural activities, and pristine beaches where the water remains warm for most of the year.

Exploring Crete feels more adventurous than other Greek islands. This is because of the diverse and exotic scenery that can change drastically within just a couple of miles. Crete will leave you truly inspired. You can visit multiple times and have a completely different experience on every trip.

Best Time to Visit Crete

The best time to visit Crete is April through early June and September through October. The weather is warm and sunny but less intense than during the highs of the summer months. Additionally, Crete is significantly less busy during these periods compared to the summer rush of July and August. The water also remains warm on Crete for the majority of the year.

Visiting Crete during Greek Orthodox Easter

A special time to visit Crete is during Easter. Like the rest of Greece, Crete observes Orthodox Easter, which usually falls on a different date than that celebrated by the Catholic Church and wider Christian world.

There are many beautiful religious services and traditions that take place during Holy Week. These are special opportunities to experience the cultural heritage of Crete, which is strongly influenced by the Greek Orthodox religion. On Easter Sunday, lamb is cooked all over the island.

How Many Days do You Need on Crete

How much time you spend on Crete depends on the length and goals of your trip.

In my opinion, a week is needed at minimum to even crack the surface of Crete. I spent ten days on the island and it was simply a taste of the island’s rich natural and historical beauty. You could truly spend a lifetime here connecting with the scenery and the culture of the place. The depth in Crete is immense.

However, It’s possible to visit Crete within just a few days if you plan right. I would say three days is enough time to visit one of the historic cities like Chania Town or Rethymno Town along with some of the other nearby beaches and sites in the region.

Getting to Crete

You can get to Crete either by plane or ferry.

Crete has three major airports with direct flights from Athens and Thessaloniki. They are located in Chania, Heraklion, and Sitia. The flight from Athens to Crete is less than an hour and tickets are very affordable.

The other option is to travel to Crete by sea. You can ferry from Athens or one of the Greek Islands. There are several ports on Crete, but the largest are in Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno. Ferry times vary, but the ferry from Athens usually takes around 8 hours.

Getting Around Crete

As Greece’s largest island, Crete is truly immense. It can take up to 7 hours to get from one end of the island to the other. The easiest way to get around Crete is by renting a car. However, if you’re nervous to drive on Crete, there are several other options to get around the island.

Renting a Car on Crete

The best way to get around Crete is by renting a car. By having your own vehicle, you’ll have the flexibility to get anywhere on the island whenever you want. Additionally, driving on Crete is incredibly scenic while taking in the diverse terrain which can change drastically within just a couple miles.

If you plan to drive on Crete, there’s a few things you should know. The main highway on the island stretches nearly the entire northern coast. It’s called the VOAK (Northern Road Axis of Crete). It spans all the coastal cities from Chania to Sitia. Other important roads connect the north to the south of the island throughout Crete’s four regions.

Driving on Crete’s smaller mountain roads and gravel passes can be both adventurous and slightly anxiety provoking. I took extra caution when driving through the tight and winding two lane mountain roads. Some of the paths through the gorges are very narrow and often hug steep cliffs. Additionally, if you’re tailgated by impatient locals or work trucks, let them pass. Trust me, you’ll have a much less stressful drive.

Scooters, Motorbikes, and ATVs

You can also rent a motorbike or ATV while on Crete. However, It’s never recommended to rent a vehicle your unfamiliar with, especially in a place like Crete.

Buses on Crete

Crete’s bus system, run by Greece’s KTEL, is a reliable and affordable way to get around the island without a car. It connects all the major cities with frequent routes along the north coast.

From Crete’s main cities, buses extend to beaches, villages, and key sites like Matala, Knossos Palace, and Samaria Gorge. However, these routes run less frequently and are often limited outside summer.

While the buses are a great way to get between Crete’s major cities, it becomes restrictive once you move beyond the main routes. Much of Crete’s beauty lies in its remote corners, where buses don’t usually reach.

Taxis and Uber on Crete

You can also use general taxi services or Uber on Crete. This is a good way to get around shorter distances within cities. Longer trips can also be arranged but costs could rise quickly. Longer distance fares are usually agreed upon in advance.

Where to Stay on Crete

Because of Crete’s size, the island is split up into four geographical regions. Where you stay will help determine travel time between cultural sites and beaches.

Accommodations on Crete range from no frills budget friendly hostels to some of the most luxurious and exclusive resorts in all of Greece.

Acro Wellness Resort

Staying at Acro Wellness Resort was one of the highlights of my first trip to Crete. The entire property is perched on a steep cliff just outside Heraklion that overlook the endless waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The aesthetic and design of the hotel is minimalist and earthy.

The property is very grounding and calming. Acro offers wellness packages such as daily yoga, spa services, and holistic treatments. Additionally, there’s a fully equipped onsite gym that overlooks the sea. There are multiple restaurants within the resort that use local and fresh Cretan ingredients. Breakfast is included on most bookings.

But by far, the most memorable part about staying at Acro is the rooms. Most rooms are private cave suites with a plunge pool that offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.

• Pepi Boutique Hotel, Rethymno: A peaceful, adults only stay hidden within Rethymno’s old town, Pepi Boutique Hotel is known for its leafy courtyard and relaxed atmosphere.

Budget Chasers

• Pension Eva, Chania: A simple, family run guesthouse with incredible harbor views, this hotel is truly one of the best value stays in Chania Town.
• Hotel Eleni, Matala: An affordable and laid back option near the famous caves of Matala Beach, perfect for travelers looking for a no frills stay by the sea.

Travel Hostels

• Cocoon City Hostel, Chania: A modern and social hostel with clean design and a welcoming atmosphere, ideal for meeting other travelers while staying close to the city center.
• Intra Muros Hostel, Heraklion: Set within the old city walls, this hostel offers a more intimate, communal feel with easy access to Heraklion’s main sights. The property has clean, calming Grecian architecture.

Below are the top places I visited while exploring Crete. Since Crete is colossal, I’ve broken down the most important places to see on Crete by the island’s four regions.

Chania Region

Chania is the Westernmost region of Crete. It’s often considered the most beautiful part of the island.

Chania is known for its exotic beaches, dramatic mountain gorges, and for having some of Crete’s best preserved architecture. Chania Town is a fascinating place to explore, with Venetian shipyards and churches that were once mosques (some with both belltowers and minarets still intact). It’s one of the prettiest coastal cities in all of Greece.

• Explore Chania Town: Chania Town is the center of Crete’s Western region. Explore the stunning churches, mosques, shipyards, and watch the sunset by the waterfront. It’s easy to take day trips into the broader Chania region from Chania Town.
• Balos Beach Lagoon: Balos Lagoon is one of the most famous beaches in all of Greece. It has shimmering and warm turquoise waters backed by rugged mountains.
• Akrotiri Peninsula: The Akrotiri Peninsula is a wild and hilly stretch of land that houses some of Crete’s most important monasteries. It’s blanketed by dense olive groves.
• Seitan Limania Cove: This is one of Crete’s greatest hidden beaches. It’s tucked away in the Akrotiri Peninsula. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunset.
• Aptera Archaeological Site: A low key historical site with an ancient amphitheater and columns amongst the olive trees. The site is backed by Crete’s White Mountains.
• Samaria Gorge: One of the most famous hikes in Greece. It’s one of the longest gorges in all of Europe.
• Elafonissi Beach: An expansive beach with soft pink sand and crystal clear water. It’s a great place to soak in the Cretan sea and sun.

Rethymno Region

Rethymno is situated between Chania and Heraklion. The Rethymno region is known for having some of Crete’s best beaches, authentic Cretan cultural events, and several important historic sites. Rethymno Town is a beautiful relic of Venetian and Ottoman architecture, with many mosques and churches dotting the port’s skyline.

• Rethymno Old Town: One of the best preserved historic towns on Crete, Rethymno’s Old Town is filled with Venetian alleys, Ottoman minarets, lively cafes, and a growing nightlife scene. Sunsets here are unforgettable near the old stone lighthouse.
• Preveli Palm Forest and Beach: Preveli may just be one of the most unique beaches in all of Greece. The beach is filled with wild date trees native to the island and a freshwater stream which runs directly into the sea.
• Arkadi Monastery: This is one of the most important historical and religious sites on Crete. Arkadi Monastery was famous for Its role in Crete’s struggle for independence against the Ottoman empire. It’s often dubbed “Crete’s Alamo”.
• Kalypso Bay: Hidden within a now semi abandoned resort, Kalypso Bay is one of the most idyllic places to swim in all of Crete. It’s a perfect place to spend the afternoon diving from the rocks into the Mediterranean Sea.
• Kourtaliotiko Gorge: Another beautiful gorge on Crete is the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. Towering limestone cliffs conceal a series of hidden waterfalls along with several mountain chapels.

Heraklion Region

As Crete’s capital and largest city, Heraklion has an abundance of places to visit both within Heraklion Town and the broader region. Heraklion is known for Its wild hills and mountains, historical sites, and traditional villages.

• Heraklion Town and Venetian Harbor: There are many things to discover within Heraklion’s historical city center. The Venetian Harbor, historic churches, and lively cafes make Heraklion an epicenter of Cretan culture.
• Acro Suites Wellness Resort: A luxurious adults only all inclusive wellness resort with breathtaking cliff views of the Mediterranean Sea. Many villas are cave suites with private plunge pools and sea views.
• Knossos Palace: Crete’s most famous archeological site, once the epicenter of the islands legendary Minoan Civilization. Knossos Palace is legendary for the labyrinth and mythical battle of the Minotaur.
• Agios Myron Greek Orthodox Shrine: A shrine with two churches commemorating Saint Myron, a 4th century bishop of Crete. His relics are miraculous and stream myrh or holy oil.
• Matala Beach: Matala was famous in the 1960s as a place hippie’s would gather and sleep in natural caves overlooking the sea. It is one of the most eclectic beaches in all of Crete.
• Master Christ the King Chapel: Situated high on the top of a mountain, this chapel is often blanketed by clouds. It’s a great place to connect with nature and light a candle in complete stillness. On a clear day, it offers unobstructed panoramic views of the Heraklion region.

Lasithi Region

Often less explored and traversed than the other regions of Crete, Lasithi is the most peaceful part of the island. The Lasithi region has a fertile elevated plateau with stunning sea views and green rolling plains. This is the best place to connect with the scenery and culture of Crete on the island’s easternmost region.

• Vai Beach: This is one of Crete’s most unique beaches. The shoreline is covered by a wall of tall date trees. Vai is Europe’s largest natural palm beach.
• Lasithi Plateau: Green and rolling hills with olive groves and iconic white windmills. Lasithi Plateau is also home to several traditional Cretan Villages. 
• Agios Nikolaos: Possibly the prettiest seaside town in all of Crete. Agios Nikolaos is centered around a very deep lake, which myth says is bottomless.
• Faneromeni Monastery: One of the most sacred monasteries on Crete famous for a miracle from the Virgin Mary. It’s a yearly pilgrimage destination for Cretans and visitors from all over Greece. 
• Itanos Beach: A concealed beach cove shaded by Tamarisk and Date trees, Itanos Beach is a perfect place to get away from the crowds and savor the joy of the Mediterranean Sea.

Beaches on Crete

Greece’s largest island has an abundance of beaches. From perfect stretches of soft sand to exotic coastlines covered by palm trees, there is a beach for every type of traveler who visits Crete.

• Balos Beach Lagoon: A breathtaking turquoise lagoon with shallow, crystal clear water and soft white sand, Balos feels like one of the most exotic beaches in all of Greece.
• Seitan Limania: Tucked between steep cliffs, Seitan Limania is a wild and dramatic cove known for its bright blue waters. Visitors often share the beach with local mountain goats.
• Elafonissi Beach: Famous for its soft pink sand, Elafonissi is one of the most unique and serene beaches in Crete.
• Preveli Beach: Where a river meets the sea beneath a lush palm forest, Preveli feels like a hidden oasis unlike anywhere else on the island.
• Kalypso Bay Beach: Set within a deep rocky cove, Kalypso Bay is a rugged, fjord-like beach known for its warm waters and rock diving.
• Vai Beach: Backed by Europe’s largest natural palm forest, Vai Beach brings a rare tropical feel to Crete with golden sand and clear blue water.
• Matala Beach: Known for its iconic cliffside caves and laid back vibe, Matala blends history, culture, and beautiful coastal views.
• Itanos Beach: A peaceful and lesser known beach near ancient ruins, Itanos offers a quiet escape from the crowds.

Monasteries on Crete

The monasteries on Crete have preserved both the spiritual and cultural fabric of Cretan life for thousands of years. They are more than religious institutions, they function as a living testimony to Crete’s history and resilience. Many have beautiful domes and bougainvillea filled courtyards that overlook the endless waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, many monasteries are painted from floor to ceiling with vivid and colorful Byzantine icons.

• Agia Triada Monastery: A beautifully preserved Venetian era monastery in Chania, Agia Triada is known for its stunning architecture, peaceful courtyards, and surrounding olive groves. It’s recognizable from It’s five orange domes.
• Arkadi Monastery: One of the most historic monasteries in Crete, Arkadi stands as a powerful symbol of Cretan resistance and sacrifice. 
• Gonia Monastery: Perched near the sea on the Rodopou Peninsula, Gonia Monastery has a fortress like design and offers sweeping views of the surrounding coast.
• Chrysoskalitissa Monastery: Dramatically set on a cliff above the sea, Chrysoskalitissa is known for its breathtaking location with panoramic views of the Mediterranean.
• Toplu Monastery: A fortified monastery in eastern Crete, Toplou is known for its imposing tower, rich history, and surrounding vineyards.
• Faneromeni monastery: Set in a quiet mountainous landscape, Faneromeni Monastery is literally built into the rock. It’s famous for a yearly pilgrimage in honor of the Virgin Mary which takes place every August.
• Preveli Monastery: Overlooking the Libyan Sea, Preveli Monastery is both a scenic and historic site tied to Crete’s resistance during wartime.

Discover Oman’s authentic mountain heritage and timeless hospitality at the Suwgra, nestled high in Jebel Akhdar -Old Soul Explorer

Tucked in the Rose Scented Fold of the Jebel Akhdar Mountains

High above the coastal shores of Muscat rise the soaring peaks of Jebel Akhdar. Known as the “Green Mountains”, the highlands of Jebel Akhdar isn’t very green at all for the most part. The most beautiful time of year to visit Jebel Akhdar is during the Damask Rose bloom, where 3 ancient villages connected by cliff hugging stone paths are covered in pink, fragrant flowers.

Tucked high in the rose scented fold of the Jebel Akhdar mountains lies one of Oman’s most authentic places to stay. The Suwgra is built into the side of a cliff and is a 500 year old mountain village turned bed and breakfast. All of the traditional elements in the Suwgra have been retained while adding modern comforts like private bathrooms with warm water and internet. When visiting Oman, the Suwgra is one hotel you simply can’t miss. Reasonably priced, it provides a glimpse into traditional Omani living and will be a stay like no other. The Suwgra isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an experience.

What is the Suwgra

Nestled deep in Oman’s Al Hajar mountain range, the Suwgra is Jebel Akhdar’s oldest cliffside village. Nearly 500 years old, the Suwgra was named for the once abundant “Suwgra” trees that were used to build homes and sturdy ceilings. The original inhabitants of the Suwgra carved their homes into limestone terraces and used olive, walnut, and juniper wood for additional construction and decorative elements.

Oman underwent rapid development beginning in the 1970s. The development continued into the early 2000s, with a gravel road being built just short of the Suwgra in 2004 for the first time.

By 2014, most of the Al Sheriqi family, descendants of the village’s original residents, had relocated to newer homes down the road seeking modern utilities and convenience. The family began to restore the mountainside village in 2015, using local clay and timber, while preserving and honoring traditional Omani architecture. Intricate wood carvings, some centuries old, still adorn the doors and ceilings

Today, the Suwgra has emerged as a beacon of sustainable tourism, including 11 rooms, each with their own private bathroom and terrace. While the accommodations are simple and clean, they remain true to the spirit of this storied Omani village. At the heart of the village is Anat Cafe, a small coffee shop with stunning views of the entire village. There are also multiple activities to either find peace and solitude in the mountains or pursue adventures in Jebel Akhdar.

The Suwgra isn’t just a hotel, it’s a fully immersive encounter with the heritage and spirit of Oman’s Al Hajar mountains. While maintaining a serene air of mountain minimalism, every detail feels deeply intentional. From vibrant red rugs to intricate wood carvings on thick earth toned walls, staying here will transport you to another time. You’ll wake to the call to prayer echoing through the canyon, recited by one of the younger family members who still live and work in the village. The cooler mountain air offers a welcome relief from the unrelenting heat of the Arabian Peninsula.

Still run by the same family that nourished the Suwgra trees, this bed and breakfast retains tradition and comfort in the same breath.

My Experience at the Suwgra

From the second I arrived at the Suwgra, I was greeted with the warmth of Omani hospitality. Locals greeted me and took my luggage. A minute later, my suitcase and Louis Vuitton duffle were flying across the canyon on a zipline, the only way to transport luggage to the hotel.

I descended a steep stone staircase which offered remarkable views of the Suwgra, carved into the mountainside, like something out of a novel or a dream. I walked through the garden where pomegranates, grapes, and olives grow in abundance. It’s important to note that trespassing in the garden without permission and guidance is not allowed.

In winter, a wooden bridge is the only safe way to cross as the river rages with fresh mountain water.

When I ascended the last of the stone steps, I was received with fragrant Omani coffee with cardamom and dates. My room was simple yet rich in traditional charm, everything I needed for my stay in the Jebel Akhdar mountains. It had a beautifully carved door, Arabian rugs, and arched windows. I had a private bathroom which was very clean and had hot water. I also had a private terrace with a porch swing on it. There are multiple room types, from simple dwellings like mine to more spacious suites.

I spent lots of time at Anat cafe, enjoying the peaceful energy of this cliffside coffee shop.

Road to the Suwgra

Be advised the road to The Suwgra is unpaved and extremely steep in sections.

A 4WD vehicle is required to access the village. In fact, there is a local police checkpoint at the base of the mountain and you will not be allowed to pass unless you driving a 4WD. All other vehicles are turned away.

Anat Coffee

Perched just above the entrance to The Suwgra, Anat Cafe offers a serene, grounded spot to sip espresso and take in panoramic views of the mountain village and surrounding canyon.

Even if you aren’t staying overnight, visitors are welcome to stop by Anat and order a drink. Just like the rest of the village, Anat features local wood accents and earthen tones. It’s simple, rustic, and tasteful. The coffee was excellent.

Meals at the Suwgra

Breakfast and dinner are included as part of the stay. Breakfast consisted of shakshuka, Omani pancakes, afoul medames (stewed fava beans) along with fresh juice.

Dinner featured grilled meats, spiced rice, traditional Omani bread, and seasonal vegetables. Before the meal, all guests gather together in a communal space to hear stories about the history of the Suwgra.

Lunch isn’t typically included but can be arranged upon request.

Activities at the Suwgra

There’s no shortage of things to do at the Suwgra. Whether you’re seeking stillness and solitude in the mountains or a more adventurous experience in Jebel Akhdar, the Suwgra offers a rich variety of activities.

Three Villages Walk | Exploring Jebel Akhdar’s Ancient Settlements

One of the highlights of my stay was the Jebel Akhdar Three Villages Walk. Led by a guide from the Suwgra, the Three Village Walk includes stops at all three of Jebel Akhdar’s biggest historical settlements. The route winds past terraced farms with panoramic views of Jebel Akhdar and closely follows the ancient falaj irrigation channels.

While Al Aqr and Al Ayn remain partially inhabited, Al Shirayjah is now mostly comprised of renovated Airbnbs. Many families who once lived in traditional stone dwellings have since resettled in the nearby ‘modern village’ just above the road, with quicker access to modern amenities.

The Damask Rose Season in Jebel Akhdar

One of the reasons I decided to visit Oman in early April was to experience the damask rose season of Jebel Akhdar. Typically, the roses of Jebel Akhdar bloom from March to mid-April each year. The traditional villages and terraced farms are covered in pink and pungent damask roses. It’s a beautiful springtime activity.

My guide from the Suwgra, Mohamed, explained the cultural importance of damask roses in producing traditional Omani rosewater. I even got to help pick roses and learn the traditional process of distilling rosewater.

The Making of Shuwa | A Traditional Omani Experience

If you are lucky enough as I was, you’ll have the rare chance to watch the cooking of the Shuwa. Literally translated from “grilled” or “roasted” in Arabic, Shuwa is marinated meat (often goat of lamb) slow cooked underground for up to two days.

Marinated with garlic and Omani spices and wrapped in banana or palm leaves, the Shuwa is the true definition of a slow burn. The meat and leaves are often placed in a sack made of palm fiber or cloth.

I had the privilege to watch the cooking of the Shuwa during Eid Al-Fitr during the end of Ramadan. Shuwa is a tedious process and usually prepared during holidays or weddings. It’s a symbol of pride for Omani heritage and culture. It was one of those moments that made staying at the Suwgra feel truly immersive.

Hiking Trails and Mountain Views at the Suwgra

There are several trails around the Suwgra that are worth exploring.

Hike to the Top of the Mountain

One of the shortest and most stunning is the path that leads directly above the cliffside village. Ascending upwards on a series of steep granite stairs leads to the top of the mountain. Along the way, I passed by herds of mountain goats and suwgra trees. At the top of the summit, there was an incredible panoramic view of Jebel Akhdar.

I sat under a large tree and admired the incredibly serene and stunning views of Oman’s Al Hajar mountains. It was the perfect place to pause and breathe in the fresh mountain air, a moment of tranquility and appreciation for my first visit to Oman. The hike from the Suwgra to the top of the mountain takes about an hour. It’s an easy hike but be careful for uneven rocks and slippery steps.

Hike to Al Wakan Village

For a more off the beaten path experience you can hike to Al Wakan, a traditional mountain village with terrace farms and large date trees. Al Wakan truly feels like a desert oasis, less traveled than other villages in Jebel Akhdar.

Previously used as a path for donkeys, the hike to Al Wakan is rocky and uneven at parts. It’s an all day hike, around 10 hours in total. If you decide to do the hike, start early, bring lots of food and water, and wear sturdy hiking shoes.

Hike to Al Masdara

Known as the Hidden Lakes Trail, the path to Al Masdara is one of the most adventurous hikes in Jebel Akhdar. This 3.7 mile (6km) hike takes you through lush wadis, cascading waterfalls, and past secluded freshwater pools. It’s approximately 4 hours round trip from the Suwgra.

Solo travel is where you truly meet yourself – Old Soul Explorer

Travel is one of modern life’s great luxuries. It’s never been easier in human history to traverse new worlds and explore foreign cultures, to catch glimpses of daily life in a different corner of the globe.

There are many styles and preferences when it comes to travel. Some people enjoy staying at all inclusive resorts to truly disconnect from life’s constant rushed pace. Others prefer guided tours, which eliminates the extra work it takes to plan trips independently. Many people like to travel in groups, with friends and loved ones, to share memories and split expenses. For me though, I have fallen in love with the art of solo traveling and I’ll explain why.

Solo traveling gives me the flexibility to discover places and chase experiences that I find the most meaningful, enriching, and impactful. It has led to personal growth I can’t fully describe and broadened my horizons. Although I’m often seeing the world alone, I don’t feel lonely. In fact, I prefer it. You meet locals in unexpected places and write stories that will last a lifetime. Solo travel builds confidence, creativity, and problem solving skills. For anyone compelled to go on an adventure by themselves, I encourage them to do so, even if just once.

I have included everything I’ve learned from my many solo trips traveling Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, along with safety tips, and recommended countries for planning your first solo adventure.

Intention and Goals of Solo Travel

I think a good place to start planning your first solo trip is defining the reason you want to go on a new adventure by yourself.

Do you want to foster newfound creativity, immerse yourself in foreign cultures and exotic landscapes, or meet other like-minded travelers. Maybe it’s a combination of factors.

Asking yourself why you want to solo travel will establish intentionality and purpose behind your trip.

Benefits of Solo Travel?

There are countless benefits of solo traveling that I’ve personally experienced.

I still remember how I felt getting ready to embark on my first solo trip at 22 years old, sitting in DFW’s international terminal and looking down at my passport and my Turkish Airlines boarding pass. I waited in what sat between curious anxiety and childlike excitement as I boarded the fourteen hour flight to Istanbul all by myself.

Solo travel shows you things about yourself you never knew and grows you into a stronger, more conscious, and well rounded person.

Here are the top benefits I have experienced while solo traveling:

Increased Confidence

Solo travelers quickly become decision makers. They decide which flights to catch, how long to stay at each destination, and the overall feel and goals of traveling alone. The feeling of accomplishment acquired during these milestone experiences will leave solo travelers with greater overall confidence that carries into everyday life.

Broadened Horizons and New Perspectives

Solo traveling has made me overall more well rounded and open to the world, which is why I encourage all people, especially young adults to try solo traveling.

Some of my biggest and boldest ideas, business and personal, have come to me while solo traveling. Exposure to unfamiliar architecture, foreign languages, and exotic terrain have led to heightened moments of creativity. One of my personal favorite benefits is the flexibility to be able to travel how I want. Travel is a luxury. For me, having the freedom to decide what I want to see and where I want to visit on my trip is crucial. Close friends may plan an expensive trip and have the possibility of being left disappointed because they have different goals, perspectives, and preferences while traveling. Solo travelers isn’t for loaners, it’s for those who are intentional in the experiences they want to have while traveling the world.

Controlled Pace and Budget

Solo travelers control the schedule, mood, and the bill. This has helped me avoid awkward money talks while allowing me to travel more efficiently and maximize personal value.

How to Solo Travel | Essentials and Tips

The hardest part about solo traveling for the first time is organizing and planning all the logistical aspects. It’s easiest to start with the essentials and work your way down to smaller details. Here is a brief list of essentials to start planning your first solo trip:

• Have a valid Passport (check the expiration date)
• Visas: Some countries issue Visa on arrival for specific nationalities. Other countries require a Visa be obtained before entering their country 
• Book flights, accommodation, and transportation 
• Bring a credit card but have some of the local currency. Some of the best places to shop only take cash
• Create a travel budget
• Have portable charger ready
• Consider SIM cards or an eSIM
• Download Offline Google Maps for navigation (directions further along below)
• Vaccinations if doctor recommended 
• Share your travel plans with loved ones back home 
• Keep copies of passport, visas, and other important documents 
• Document a personal list of reservations 
• Bring TSA approved travel locks for your bags

Safety First | Trust your Instincts

When traveling alone, safety takes on a new urgency. You’ll be in a foreign country all by yourself. It’s essential to stay aware of your surroundings and trust your judgment at all times.

To make yourself more at ease before your trip, do research on the country and area you’ll be visiting. Read other travelers’ reviews and opinions on safety. Book reputable hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs and arrive during daylight if possible. Always share your accommodation locations with family or friends.

Keep Your Money and Belongings Secure

Wear a money built under your clothes in crowded areas and make sure your passport is always secured. Make sure your valuables where you are staying are safe and secure with locks or in safes.

Stay alert in cities

In cities, try staying in areas frequented by travelers. These areas tend to be more upscale and developed. For example, cities like Athens, Amman, and Palermo all have historic city centers with monuments, restaurants, shops, and attractions. These cities also have slums and even refugee areas which aren’t the safest for solo travelers.

Blend in For More Conservative and Traditional Environments

If appropriate, consider wearing local clothing or following unspoken dress guidelines for settings where culture and modesty are extremely important. This can include many countries in the Middle East along with regions in Africa and Asia.

When I solo traveled Oman, I watched a traditional Omani bullfight in the village of Liwa near the UAE border. All of the men in attendance wore the dishdasha, the traditional thobe of the region. This was not a tourist attraction. To respect the local feel of the event and to both blend in and feel more safe, I wore a white dishdasha to the fights, a small effort to try and blend in.

Create An Itinerary But Leave Room for Spontaneity

I start planning my solo trips by building a rough itinerary.

I use Google Maps and start pinning important destinations and places that peak my interest. Sometimes, I organize by color or by neighborhood. Having a rough map allows me the structure to save my most important priorities while leaving space to wander and get lost.

Here are some of the common topics I use when organizing my maps?

• Monuments and top sights
• Personal places that peak my interest
• Nature: mountains and beaches
• Restaurants and cafes
• Lodging (hotels, hostels, airbnbs)
• Transit points (airports, subways, ferry ports)

Really, any place you want to visit can be saved to your map.

Here is an example of how I structure my itinerary with Google Maps when I was planning my trip to Sicily and visiting the capital Palermo.

If you plan to travel without an international phone or data plan, I suggest downloading the offline version of Google Maps before you leave.

2. Select your map and tap the three dots in the upper right corner
3. Choose “Download offline map”
4. Adjust the map to your needs
5. Tap the “Download” button

Don’t Overbook and be open to Unexpected Experinces

While I suggest having a basic itinerary to guide your solo-trip, I highly recommend leaving room to wander and find hidden gems and be ready for unexpected adventures. I find that having daily highlights helps give my trips direction, but leaving room for unplanned experinces sometimes leads to the best stories.

When I visited Jordan and the ancient city of Petra in Wadi Musa, I meet bedouin cousins who invited me to their weekly Friday chicken bbq. We collected water to put out the fire from a well struck by the Prophet Moses staff housed in an old shrine. We ate chicken and drank whiskey while watching the sunset fall over the valley during the last call to prayer. It wasn’t anything fancy, just plastic lawn chairs overlooking Wadi Musa and sharing stories between new friends.

Another time, on my trip to Oman, I left one of my travel days more open and got to explore different seaside neighborhoods I hadn’t planned on visiting. This widened my perspective of Muscat, only knowable through the many distinct but seperated quarters of the coastal capital.

Solo Travel Activities

Below are some of the things I enjoy doing while solo traveling. They include a balance between exploration and relaxation. Ultimately, the magic in taking a solo trip is you get to decide how you travel and what you do.

• Take a roadtrip by renting a car
• Explore photography
• Wander lively souqs and bazaars
• Walk the historic center to get a feel for a new city
• Journal on the beach or mountain peaks

Best Countries for Solo Travelers

Not all countries are created equal when it comes to solo travel potential. Some destinations naturally call those seeking personal exploration and independent travel. They offer safety, hospitality, cultural depth, and accessible transportation. But above all, they create spaces to learn more about yourself and the world. Here are a few of my favorite countries I’ve solo traveled to and why I think they would make a great choice if you’re looking to go on an adventure by yourself.

Greece

Greece was the first country I ever solo traveled to and will always hold a special place in my heart. Sitting in the southeasternmost corner of Europe, Greece is the rugged, breathtaking last frontier of the “West”. It’s where mountains, seas, and myths merge. 

Greece has over 200 inhabited islands for solo travelers to discover. From the jagged mountainside villages of Karpathos that plunge vertically into the Aegean Sea, to the volcanic moonscape beaches of Milos, and the wild, expansive terrain of Crete, the Greek Islands are one of the most special places on earth.

Besides Greece’s islands, the Peloponnese in the South of Greece is truly extraordinary and is dotted with ancient ruins, sandy beaches, and cultural treasures. In the north, Thessaloniki, Meteora, and Mt. Athos offers more off the beaten path experiences with Greece’s historical, archaeological, and spiritual heritage. Athens is an underrated European capital with lively nightlife, cafes, and tavernas. It has a special energy that can’t be found anywhere else.

Greece has expansive ferry connections and regular daily flights to larger islands, making transportation cost effective and efficient.

Jordan

Another great country for solo travelers is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Jordan is a great country for those seeking outdoor desert adventure and the chance to explore historical and archaeological marvels, beautifully weathered by the sands of time. Jordanian hospitality is unmatched. Wherever you visit, you will be welcomed with a steaming cup of tea or Arabic coffee and a smile. From then on, you are no longer a stranger but a friend.

Exploring the sandstone cliffs in the vast orange desert of Wadi Rum, wandering the ancient carved streets of Petra, and floating in the middle of the Dead Sea are truly once in a lifetime experinces. It’s the perfect setting to foster creativity or seek a new perspective. Amman is an exciting city, the heart of Jordan, with a suprising creative side and up and coming art scene.

Highways in Jordan are in excellent condition and remarkably safe for solo travelers.

Italy

Italy is one of the most special countries in the world. Filled with mouthwatering food, jaw dropping art, and dreamlike landscapes, a solo trip to Italy will leave you rejuvenated and inspired. From the green rolling hills of Tuscany to the azure coasts of Sicily, time moves remarkably slower in Italy.

The cobble-stoned streets or Rome is the perfect starting point for solo travelers discovering Italy and will transport you back in time. Day trips to cities like Venice, Florence, and Naples are easy and quick thanks to Italy’s modern train system.

My favorite part of Italy is the south, especially Sicily. Palermo is an underrated European city, full of culture and character. The Valley of the Temples sits in an ancient olive grove and offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. Taormina, under the watchful volcanic eye of Mt. Etna feels like Italy’s own Hollywood hills.

No matter how many times I visit, Italy will always have something both new and timeless to show me.

Turkey

At the crossroads of East and West, Turkey ignites all the travelers senses. Situated between both Europe and Asia, Turkey is the meeting point of the world. It’s the intersection of religions, cultures, and ethnicities. It has always been a nation at the nexus of both geopolitical coexistence and tension.

Istanbul is a historical and cultural mosaic. The complex layers of past empires and nations that have come and gone give the city its distinctive beauty. The Hagia Sophia is a sight to behold sitting proudly on the Bosphorus. The energy in Sultanahmet during the call to prayer is ancient and electric.

Besides Istanbul, Turkey has remarkable off the beaten path destinations, many of which can easily be visited on a road trip through Anatolia or along the Turquoise Coast.

Oman

Oman will reshape the way you see the world. It is one of the most peaceful, traditional, and orderly countries I’ve ever solo traveled. And at the same time, it has embraced the benefits of modernization. Yet, while neighboring countries like the UAE and Qatar have shifted deeper into futuristic aspirations and towering skyscrapers, Oman has retained its deep cultural authenticity.

The sprawling capital of Muscat, walled by soaring rose-colored, granite mountains and bordered by the Arabian Sea is a compelling destination to explore. It’s appeal comes not so much from the monuments but from the port capitals chill and coastal ambiance. Muscat is best discovered slowly, the real beauty is found between old souqs, sleek corniches, and roadside beaches.

The mountains of Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar provide opportunities for personal reflection while watching the sunrise or climbing rugged peaks offering panoramic canyon views. Salalah is a solo traveler’s fever dream. Thousands of wild camels roam freely across roads and powdery, white-sand beaches. The otherworldy beaches are backed by soaring cliffs and tropical palm forests where bananas, mangos, and papayas are harvested. You can also catch a glimpse of local traditions at Oman’s bull fights, camel races, and Friday goat markets.

Traveling in Oman is easiest if you rent a car. Roads and highways are in excellent condition. Additionally, flights between Oman are fast and affordable. It takes less than an hour to fly from Muscat to Salalah.

Discover Bull Fighting in Oman, an off the beaten path experience and deeply rooted cultural tradition – Old Soul Explorer

Oman is a country rich in authentic experiences and unforgettable moments. My first trip discovering this otherworldly corner of Arabia was filled with remarkable adventures watching the sunrise on the cliffs edge of Jebel Shams, wandering the wild camel-filled shores of Salalah, and exploring the modern sprawl of Muscat.

However, the most exciting moment of my trip came in a more rural, less-traveled encounter with Oman. In fact, it was one of the most off- the beaten path experiences I’ve had in all my travels, watching the bull fights of Oman

Bullfighting in Oman is an ancient tradition. Centered on the battle of two large bulls, the Omani bull fights are a community event and symbol of cultural pride. However, bullfighting in Oman is not a tourist event. Being prepared to properly attend while understanding the risks is crucial to fully enjoy this once in a lifetime experience.

This blog is designed to serve as a guide for those who wish to spectate one of Oman’s unforgettable bull fights.

Where to Watch the Bull Fights

The bull fights in Oman are a centuries old event rooted in the cultural identity of the Northern provinces of Oman which are called governorates. The Omani bull fights are practiced in the governorates North of Muscat and are most common in cities and towns including Barka, Sohar, and Liwa. However, many of the bulls are bred in Salalah in Oman’s southern Dhofar region.

Smaller spontaneous fights occur throughout the year (mainly on Fridays) while bigger events are held on major holidays like Eid Al-Fitr, at the end of Ramadan. I attended a very big battle on the 4th day of Eid.

I spectated an Omani Bull Fight in the small village of Liwa close to the border with the United Arab Emirates. In fact, many Emiratis crossed the border to watch the event, mixing in their traditional white clothing often seen in Dubai with the more colorful Omani dress.

What is Omani Bull fighting

The rules of bullfighting in Oman are pretty simple. Two large bulls of similar stature and strength enter an open field arena and are brought together to push and wrestle each other. The goal is not for the injury of the bulls, but rather for one to overpower the other and force it to retreat. When it is clear there is a winner, handlers break up the match, often needing the help of the crowd. Bull fights usually last a few minutes with multiple matches.

How does Omani Bull Fighting Differ from other Cultures

Unlike the bullfighting in Spain and Latin America, there is no matador and the bulls are not killed. According to Omani custom, no harm is intended for the bulls. It is a contest between the bulls themselves and not the people.

Additionally, Omani bull fights are not touristic in nature. Attendance is free but usually consists of farmers, breeders, and local families. As a symbol of social dominance, important community members often sit towards the front of the crowd.

What is it like to attend a local Bull Fights

When I first pulled up to the Omani bull fights, I was both incredibly excited and a little overwhelmed. For starters, people were parking along the edge of the freeways and in the center divider. Cars lined the road and thousands of people were crossing the highway without warning.

As exciting as the bull fights in Oman are, I found them to be both culturally immersive and a little overstimulating. There is just so much to take in. Coming from a sleepy suburb in Dallas, it was certainly an exotic experience.

As I walked into the open air arena, I saw bulls tied to a stake, some screaming. Local Omani farmers and families brought lawn chairs around the ring, while others stood on tall mounds of dirt. I squeezed in on one of the hills to get good views. Helpful locals made room for me to spectate. I was the only Westerner in attendance. No women were present.

Men with loud speakers yelled in Arabic to excite the crowd. Throughout the matches, the organizers would wail into their megaphones, adding to the drama. The first bulls were eventually brought out. When they were released, they locked horns and began to wrestle. Sometimes, the bulls would break free and charge the crowd, sending the audience scrambling.

Atmosphere of the Omani Bull Fights

The vibe at the Omani Bull Fights is laid back and social. Friends chat in a loving but aggressive Arabic, probably betting on the battle and catching up on life. People move freely, getting different vantage points and seeing the bulls up close as they wait patiently under sidr trees for their match. Several people saw me and made conversation with me in English. I met a man with his sons who lived in Minnesota for a number of years. He helped me break through the crowd at sunset to get last minute footage of the main event with the largest bulls.

The entire bull fights lasted around 4 hours until sunset.

What to Wear

If you plan to spectate a bull fight in Oman, I suggest wearing traditional clothing. Nobody will be wearing t-shirts and jeans here. Travelers should respect the cultural atmosphere and setting of the event.

Usually, a full length thobe or dishdasha as it’s called in Oman is worn by men. The most traditional color is pure white, but many Omanis wear blue, tan, and olive green dishdashas. Many men also wear a skull cap and kashmir turban, although this isn’t required. I also brought my wood stick I got in Nizwa called a Assa. You can also wear a Khanjar, the ceremonial silver dagger, although this is a more formal object usually worn at weddings.

Women should wear a Hijab covering their hair and should be dress modestly. An Islamic dress called an abaya would be best since it covers the arms and legs fully. However, I will note that I didn’t see any women at the Omani bull fights.

Finding out about Bull Fights in Oman

The Bull Fights in Oman are not well publicized. Events are planned by a few organizers who share vague details that are entirely in Arabic.

I had to do extensive research to find out more details on the exact date, time, and location of the Omani bull fights. I even reached out to two of the organizers to confirm the specific location of the bull fights with Google Maps. The organizers were very friendly and hospitable and invited me to the event. If you would like the event organizers contact information, message me directly. Afterwards, I thanked them and they invited me to attend again any time i’m in Oman.

I attended one of the biggest bull fights of the year on the 4th day of Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan. There were over 3,000 people watching.

Safety around the Omani bullfights

It’s important to understand the safety risks before attending the bullfighting in Oman. The matches are in open air arenas with no barriers present. Sometimes, bulls break loose and charge the crowd, sending the crowd running. Knowing this, I stood mostly on the mounds to both get panoramic shoots but also to stay safe. Occasionally, I ventured to the front to capture a few pictures and videos.

Unfortunately, if the bulls break loose, it can occasionally be fatal. At the very end of the fights, as I was walking to my car, I saw the audience begin to rush. Later that night on my social media, I found out that a local young man from the village of Suwaiq passed away after one of the bulls attacked him at the last battle.

Attending the Omani bull fights should be done with absolute precaution and respect for the animals. I would recommend spectating from a spot you feel safe at.

Additionally, there is no protection from the sun except a few Sidr and date trees on the perimeter of the dirt field.

Oman is renowned for its 2,000 miles (3,200 km) of wild and rugged coastline. Jebel Shams is the highest point in Oman and is the first place in the country to be greeted by the sunrise. Translated from Arabic as the “Mountain of the Sun”, Jebel Shams will surely set the travelers imagination on fire. Up here, high in the Al Hajar mountains, is a sort of peace that words can’t fully describe. It’s the perfect place to witness the birth of a new day or lose yourself in a mountain sky full of stars. This is truly one of the most special places in all of Oman. It’s up here where you can gain a new perspective, overlooking the formidable and breathtaking Grand Canyon of Arabia.

Why Visit Jebel Shams

Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, offers some of the most breathtaking views and cliffside trails in the Arabian Peninsula. Towering over the vast Wadi Ghul, a rugged canyon plunging 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) deep, Jebel Shams has rightfully earned the nickname “The Grand Canyon of Arabia.” With its raw natural beauty and otherworldly landscapes, Jebel Shams is one of the most unforgettable places in the Middle East. In my opinion, it’s an absolute must-see when visiting Oman.

Hiking in Jebel Shams

There are many hiking trails in Jebel Shams. The most famous is the Balcony Walk, a cliffside route that hugs the canyon rim and offers 360 degree panoramic views of the sheer vertical drop.

Hikers embarking on the Balcony Walk should take precaution as there are limited safety railings and the path can be quite rocky and uneven. Those afraid of heights may want to sit this one out. However, for those that make the journey, there are remains of several abandoned mountain villages carved into the canyon that are worth discovering. These previous mountain dwellings are similar to the Suwgra in Jebel Akhdar, a former Omani village turned into a bed and breakfast.

Camping on the Canyon Rim

Another immersive way to experience Jebel Shams is to go camping. One thing I quickly learned about Omani culture is that camping is a big deal. Local Omani’s come to the mountain prepared with high tech camping gear to cook full meals and brew traditional Arabic coffee and tea. They often take pictures for social media with the beautiful cliffside backdrop and their meticulously prepared camping set up.

Sunrise and Sunset at jebel Shams

My favorite time of day at Jebel Shams is at sunrise and sunset. This is the best time to photograph Jebel Shams as the shifting shadows paint the canyon walls and mountain peaks a thousand shades of terracotta, amber, and rose. It’s also when the harsh Arabian sun softens, making it the perfect time to take photos and admire the sheer natural beauty on the mountains edge.

Watching the sunrise from the ridge of Oman’s highest mountain was one of the most peaceful experiences of my entire trip. Sitting alone on a rocky edge of the canyon rim, I witnessed a new day taking shape in complete stillness. The only sounds were the soft clinking of goat bells in the distance and the occasional song of local birds carried through the mountain gorge by the breeze. It’s the kind of rare moment that slows everything down, the kind of moment that only seems to happen once a trip.

Sunset brings a moodier palette to Jebel Shams, as the setting sun washes the mountains in tones of lavender and blue-grey before the vastness of the canyon goes completely dark. Small campfires begin to glow along the ridge, tiny flickers of warmth against the night. Overhead, the sky unfolds into a blanket of stars, so clear and numerous it feels like you’ve stepped into another world.

How many days do you need at Jebel Shams

I think how much time you spend in Jebel Shams depends on what your plans are.

For me, one day in Jebel Shams was more than enough time to experience the sunrise, enjoy all the various mountain viewpoints, and admire a sky full of stars. My purpose for visiting Jebel Shams was simply to appreciate the stunning scenery and admire the changing colors of the canyon during the morning and sunset.

If you are camping in Jebel Shams or want to do more of the hikes, then I would stay for two or three days. I also heard the Wadi Ghul at the base of Jebel Shams is incredible. I’m pretty sure the roads in Wadi Ghul are only accessible by 4WD.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Jebel Shams is between October and April. Additionally, the weather is more hospitable this time of year and the sky is clear for stargazing.

Daytime temperatures range from 68°F – 86°F (20°C – 30°C). I visited in early April and the weather was perfect. However, the temperatures can drop significantly at night, so I recommend bringing a light jacket and long pants. If you’re going to camp at Jebel Shams, I suggest having plenty of blankets.

Getting to Jebel Shams

It takes around 3 hours to get to Jebel Shams from Muscat. I passed though the historic city of Nizwa and stopped to see the famous fortress and lively souqs before continuing onwards to Al Hamra. Along the way, I passed by lush Wadi’s with date trees and large green fields. True desert oases.

The Road up to Jebel Shams

As I approached the Al Hajar mountain range, the road began to switch back and take multiple twists and turns as I started my ascent. The last 5 miles to the summit of Jebel Shams is an unpaved and rocky road. I suggest having a 4WD. I did see several smaller cars on the side of the road overheating with the drivers trying to cool the engine with what little water they had with them.

Take your time reaching the top of Jebel Shams. The road offers stunning panoramic views of the rugged mountain terrain and exotic scenery.

Viewpoints

In my opinion, there are remarkable views anywhere you look in Jebel Shams. Here are some of the best viewpoints on the mountain.

Balcony walk

The balcony walk offers stunning panoramic views of Jebel Shams and the deep Wadi Ghul. The balcony walk is around 5 miles round trip. I didn’t get to do the balcony walk on my first visit, but I hope to do it when I return to Oman.

Sunset Point Jebel Shams

Near the Jebel Shams Resort, the Sunset Point is an amazing place to watch the mountain turn new colors by the changing afternoon light and get wide range photos of the canyon.

Viewpoints 1 and 3

Right off the main road, viewpoints 1 and 3 on Google Maps are relatively close together. These spots are perfect to get shots of the depth of Wadi Ghul gorge and the nearby mountains. It’s an easy walk along the canyon rim between the two points to take in the views.

My Spot – Best View in Jebel Shams

The best view of Jebel shams is past the small mosque. Veer slightly left off the trail and past the uneven granite boulders, incense trees, and families of local mountain goats to a small rocky shelf offering the best views of the canyon.

This secluded spot gives a full view of the mountain and is the perfect place to sit in admiration of this natural wonder. It’s where I watched the sunset and woke up early before dawn to experience sunrise the next day. It’s also a step away from where I stayed at the Jebel Shams Domes.

Jebel Shams Domes

I stayed in the Jebel Shams Domes, close to the rim of the canyon. The dome was spacious and included large windows, a private bathroom, and heating. Free breakfast is also included as part of your booking at the Jebel Shams Resort Restaurant just down the road. It was also pretty affordable and more comfortable for those who aren’t into camping.

Cliffside Cafe

Cliffside cafe is a great place to grab a cup of coffee and admire Arabia’s Grand Canyon. They have a rooftop patio where you can enjoy panoramic views of the ridge. They also have a decent food menu as well.

• A 4WD to drive up to the mountain
• A charged phone and navigation system (Google Maps is my favorite)
• Cash (Omani Rial). Some of the smaller stores and restaurants only take cash
• Hiking shoes for better grip

Visit the nearby Jebel Akhdar “Green Mountains”

Nearby the Grand Canyon of Arabia is another must see destination in Oman, Jebel Akhdar. Known in Arabic as the “Green Mountains”, Jebel Akhdar offers enchanting views of ancient stone villages hugging the cliff, terraced gardens connected my rugged stairs, and blooming rose fields. Jebel Akhdar is another destination that will make you fall in love with the mountainous side of Oman.

The best time to visit Jebel Akhdar is during the Damask rose season, when the hills are covered in thousands of pink and pungent roses.

In my guide to Salalah, I’ve included my itinerary, places to explore, travel tips, and the most important things to know before visiting Salalah, the Eden of the Middle East.

Oman is the gateway to the Middle East. It’s the serene, often overlooked corner of Arabia. Compared to the other flashy, oil-rich monarchies of the region, the Sultanate of Oman has retained its unique character and authenticity. It’s truly one of my favorite countries I’ve visited in the region and I’m already planning my next trip back.

Yet, while many people visit the coastal capital of Muscat, the walled historic city of Nizwa, and the soaring peaks of Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, fewer travelers head further south. Just an hour flight from the cosmopolitan, date tree-lined boulevards of Muscat, Salalah and the Dhofar region are another world entirely. Tropical forests blanket the coast, with palm trees extending all the way to the shoreline. Concealed within Salalah’s lush and mysterious tropical forests are vast banana, mango, and papaya plantations.

Thousands of wild camels roam freely across pristine white-sand beaches, framed by soaring mountains and rugged cliffs that seem to plunge directly into the sea. Salalah isn’t just a destination, it’s a travelers real life fever dream. It’s the soul of Dhofar, Arabia’s Eden.

Despite this, Salalah is still considered off the beaten path and is one of the Middle East’s best kept secrets. It’s gaining more popularity though. When I visited in early April, I was the only traveler swimming on postcard worthy tropical beaches and trekking the wild and exotic coastline dotted with camels as far as the eye can see. I’ve compiled everything I did and loved about exploring Salalah in my guide to the otherworldly and mystical Dhofar region of southern Oman.

Why Visit Salalah

Salalah is unlike anywhere I’ve ever traveled to and is probably unlike anywhere I’ll ever visit again. It’s truly one of a kind, a place that surpasses all expectations. It’s astonishing such a destination exists in the heart of the Middle East.

Some of my favorite memories of Salalah include shopping for local fruit and juices at night from the street stalls, exploring the rugged and wild coastline, and driving my car directly on the beach. This is the Arabian Gulf’s tropical, camel-filled oasis. The only regret i had was not having more time to explore even more of the otherworldy terrain, breathtaking scenery, and fascinating stories of the locals. There is simply too much untamed beauty to experience on one visit.

Best Time of Year to Visit

The best time overall to visit Salalah is between October and May. During these months, Salalah boasts warm but pleasant weather, clear skies, and empty beaches. It’s the perfect time to wander the shores and hills of Dhofar with virtually no other tourists.

I visited Salalah in early April. The weather was amazing and I was generally the only traveler I saw on my road trip around the Dhofar region. Additionally, camels roam freely this time of year across the beaches and hills and often came up to my car to say hello.

Khareef Season | Salalah’s Monsoon

Salalah is already magical 365 days of the year. However, the shores of Salalah truly transform into something special during the Khareef or monsoon season. Mist blankets all the beaches and climbs up the jagged, vertical cliffs. It becomes a mysterious place, a lush paradise as all of the mountains, hills, and wadis of Salalah turn green. I hope to return to Salalah in all its glory during the Khareef season sometime soon.

Getting to Salalah

The easiest way to get to Salalah is by plane. It’s only an hour flight from Muscat. The flight was very smooth and enjoyable, offering stunning aerial views of Oman’s towering mountains and expansive 2,000 miles of coastline.

Alternatively, you can make a road trip out of it and drive to Salalah. It takes around 16 hours to drive from Muscat, so it’s best to split up the driving over two or three days. I would take the coastal route which offers views of the Arabian Sea the entire drive and goes through the quiet but charming city of Sur. It’s also possible to road trip from Dubai, if the rental car company allows you to drive from the UAE to Oman.

Getting Around Salalah

The best way to explore Salalah is by renting a car. Many of the clifftop ocean views and tropical beaches are spread far apart from each other. The main roads are paved and well maintained. Driving here isn’t too challenging once you get the hang of it. In rare instances of Arab road rage, simply let the impatient drivers pass.

Also watch your speed. Oman is notorious for its speed camera towers all along the highway, especially in the Dhofar province. Tickets will be deducted from your rental deposit.

I used Enterprise when renting my car at the Salalah airport, so I was ready to start exploring as soon as I landed.

Do you need a 4×4

While you technically don’t need a 4×4 when visiting Salalah, I highly recommend it. Having a 4×4 will make off roading on gravel and sandy roads much easier. Most of the cliffside views, hidden wadis, and secluded beaches are only accessible by 4×4. Even then, many of these rugged roads were pretty easy to drive on.

Where to Stay in Salalah

Salalah has accommodation options for every traveler style and budget. Here are a few places to check out.

Luxury Seeker

The Antara Al Baleed Resort is a luxury 5-star resort with an infinity pool, spa, and private villas ($300-$500 a night).

Mid-Range Affordability

More affordable but just as stylish, the Fanar Hotel and Residences offers ocean views, direct beach access, and a large pool area ($120–$180 per night).

Budget Travelers

Despite being considered a “budget” hotel, the Salalah Plaza Hotel is no motel. The rooms are spacious, modern, and clean. It’s a real steal. A hotel like this in the US would be triple the price. The hotel is also centrally located, making it easy to explore Salalah and the coast of Dhofar ($50-$80 per night).

Travel Hostel

The Salalah Social Club is a relaxed hangout where locals and expats come together to play sports, sip coffee, and unwind. It’s a great place to get a glimpse into everyday life in the Dhofar region. Rooms are simple but well maintained. It’s an excellent place to meet like minded travelers ($15-$30 per night).

Private Airbnb with Ocean Views and Beach Access

I stayed in Taqah, just 20 miniutes outside Salalah. The Airbnb I stayed at was a private condo overlooking the Arabian Sea. It had direct beach access where I watched the sunrise and sunset from my balcony each day.

The Airbnb was clean and recently renovated. It was modern and very comfortable. The host even burned bakhoor, the traditional Omani incense in the condo as a gesture welcoming me to Salalah. I totally recommend staying here. It was the perfect place to come back to after a full day of driving, hiking, and swimming in Oman’s mystical Dhofar province.

Salalah Things to Do and Highlights

Salalah is a destination full of diverse experiences waiting to be explored. From pristine white sand beaches backed by dense palm forests, to cliffside views of the Arabian Sea, where clouds drift low enough to touch, you’ll find a rare kind of magic here that stays with you long after you leave.

Tropical Plantations and Local Fruit Stands

Salalah’s dense tropical forests make it the perfect place to harvest bananas, mangos, and papayas. Dirt roads wind through massive plantations that are concealed in an endless wall of palm trees and birds of paradise.

The tropical plantations amidst the dense palm forests turn into a magical and mysterious place at night. Along Sultan Qaboos Street, makeshift stalls sell fresh and affordable fruit and juices into the earliest hours of the morning.

Al-Qawf Souq

The Al-Qawf Souq is Salalah’s one stop shop for traditional Omani clothing, fine goods, and last minute souvenirs. I was guided by the bright neon signs written in Arabic and the smell of frankincense, collected from the hills on the nearby coastal mountains. The bazaar is open late.

Driving on Salalah’s White-Sand Beaches

One of the most remarkable things to do when visiting Salalah is to drive on the beach. Cars are allowed to drive directly on Salalah’s expansive white sand beaches. It felt like I was living in a dream while cruising on the spotless ivory-white beaches lined by a wall of a million palm trees. It’s best to stay on the hard sand designated for driving, as going off the path can lead to your car getting stuck.

Salalah’s beaches had some of the warmest waters I’ve ever swam in. I had the entire beach all to myself with not another soul in sight. After swimming in the Omani sea, I opened the trunk of my car and watched the waves under a canopy of palm trees. It felt like I was on a beach in Hawaii rather than the tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

My favorite beach to drive on was the Al Haffa Beach, which I included in my map of Salalah.

West Salalah | 100 Miles of Wild Coastline to Yemen

I spent my second day in Salalah driving West, all along Dhofar’s expansive and rugged coastline, past an abundance of wild camels and cliffside turns all the way to Oman’s last frontier, the border with Yemen.

Eftalquot Cliffside Roads

Less than 45 minutes from the city of Salalah is the Eftalquot Cliffside Roads. These rugged dirt tracks twist through the hills and are made for 4×4 off-roading, offering a once in a lifetime drive. There are dozens of roads to choose from, each leading to a secret wadi or hidden beach. Ultimately, the main road leads down to Eftalquot Beach, a remote cove with an untouched and private coastline.

I drove for miles on the edge of the cliff which offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea. A weathered metal fence marks where it’s still safe to drive. Beyond that, it’s just crashing waves on the towering cliffs and jagged rocks below.

Along the entirety of the cliffside road, wild camels roam freely. Some even came up to my car and stuck their head directly into my window to say hello. You can get here by following Google Maps to Eftalquot Viewpoint.

Shipwreck Beach ViewPoint

One of the most dramatic of the Eftalquot Cliffside Roads leads to Shipwreck Beach. Tucked beneath the shadow of the rugged cliffs lies a rusting cargo vessel, driven into the rocky shore by Cyclone Mekunu in 2018. Since then, the ship has remained frozen in time. An eerie monument to the power of nature, it’s one of the most iconic viewpoints along Salalah’s coast.

Despite the name, Shipwreck Beach isn’t really a beach you can walk on. It’s a cliffside vantage point showcasing the ship, now forever trapped amongst the waves.

I didn’t make it to Shipwreck Beach on my trip to Salalah since the section of the cliffside road to reach the beach was in poor condition. I didn’t want to risk damaging my rental car. Still, just knowing the ship is out there, slowly being reclaimed by the sea, adds to the mystery of Dhofar’s untamed coastline.

Mughsail Beach

Mughsail easily takes the crown as Salalah’s most impressive and inspiring beach. This long coastal stretch of marble white, perfectly soft sand is backed by soaring mountains, creating a dramatic contrast between the rugged terrain and the Arabian Sea. The water was so clear I could see my feet and it was also very warm. It was the perfect place for a swim and to cherish my time in Oman, the Eden of the Middle East.

When I visited in the morning, I had the entire beach to myself with not another car in the parking lot. Wadding in the warm waters of the sea, I let the gentle waves wash over me, a simple moment of peace connected to the beauty and stillness of Salalah.

Afoul Beach

The beautiful Afoul Beach is another untamed, secluded gem on Salalah’s western coastline. Tucked between two sets of rugged coastal mountains, Afoul Beach is a stretch of pristine white shoreline.

A narrow gravel path winds down to the beach, making for an adventurous drive. I recommend renting a 4×4 if you plan to drive down to Afoul Beach. Once again, I had the entire beach all to myself. A small lookout point showcases the hidden cove and is the perfect place to photograph Salalah’s unparalleled and exotic beauty.

Shaat Top View

One of the highest vantage points to admire both the Dhofar region’s otherworldly terrain and the vastness of the Arabian Sea is Shaat Top View. Located atop Jabal Al Qamar, Shaat Viewpoint truly feels like the edge of the Middle East.

It’s incredibly quiet up here. The only thing I could hear was the sound of muffled waves and the songs of the occasional birds. I watched in awe as giant clouds floated directly in front of me before disappearing into the soul of Oman.

Salalah’s Wild Camels

As I explored Salalah’s exotic and untamed coastline, I discovered what makes this corner of Arabia truly magical, thousands of wild camels roaming freely across the hills and highways. These gentle creatures cross roads without warning, moving at their own unbothered pace.

On my drive west from Salalah toward the Yemen border, I passed endless herds of camels. Some even wandered right up to my car, curious and calm, greeting me as if I was an old friend. Moving with quiet confidence, Salalah’s camels are a defining part of Oman’s southern Dhofar region, home to the world’s highest concentration of wild camels.

The camels contribute to Salalah’s otherworldly atmosphere and are one of the most memorable aspects of my first visit to Oman.

Drive to the Yemen Border

I pulled over at a tiny hole in the wall shawarma spot in the middle of nowhere to grab two sandwiches. It was noon, and after a day without eating, I was starving. Refueled, I continued westward toward Sarfayt, the quiet border town on the border with Yemen.

The road to the Yemen border winds across an elevated plateau where clouds drift silently over the towering cliffs, spilling into the heart of Arabia. Every mile offers breathtaking views of the sparkling azure sea. An abundance of incense and baobab trees dot the hills. Wild camels, donkeys, and cows roam freely, crossing the road and forcing cars to stop as they graze on weeds. I watched local pickup trucks honk at the camels, who unbothered, continued to eat in the middle of the road. Unlike the workers I was in no rush.

I passed through about five military checkpoints on the way to Oman’s last town. I even asked the police for water. They generously provided me a large water bottle for me to keep.

As I got closer to Yemen, the landscape only increased in both beauty and mystery as the road took dramatic turns into the clouds and along the soaring green mountains all the way to the sea.  I could only imagine the road on the Yemen side of the border would be just as alluring.

Almost Getting Detained at the Border Crossing

I drove right up to the armed border, marked by an arched Arabian style gate and peered into the heartland of Yemen. Omani police with rifles in hand quickly approached and made me delete every photo I took of the militarized border crossing. Additionally, my rental car was temporarily unusable as Enterprise probably thought I was taking the Chinese 4×4 into war-torn Yemen. Finally, after restarting the car 4 times, I sped out of the border crossing, my hands still shaking.

// I do not recommend driving into the armed border crossing checkpoint as I did. This was a miscalculation on my behalf. Like the border guards did with me, they will force you to delete any pictures or videos of the militarized border with Yemen. Unfortunately, Yemen is still one of the most unstable countries on the planet. I am thankful I wasn’t detained.

Hopefully, the Civil War will end in Yemen in the near future, restoring peace to the lives of the Yemeni people and increasing tourism which could bring some relief to the stressed economy.

Riding a Camel on the Beach

When I was planning my trip to Salalah, one of the top things I wanted to do was ride a camel. Getting to ride a camel was a dream of mine ever since I was a child. I was both excited and a little anxious when the camel stood up for the first time, raising me high into the air as he carried me across the beach. It was my first time riding a camel. It was an experience of a lifetime for me.

Eating Camel for the first time

For dinner, I headed to a traditional Omani restaurant. Madhabi Alsultan Restaurant, is a hole in the wall right off the side of the road. If you weren’t looking for it, it would be hard to find. The owner placed a plastic placemat on the table and began to bring out plates of hummus, fresh chicken, and meat pies.

My favorite part of the meal was the camel skewers. It was my first time ever trying camel. It was one of the tastiest things I’ve ever eaten!

I can honestly say my whole day in Salalah revolved around camels; spotting camels, riding camels, and eating camels.

Another restaurant I ate at that served tasty Middle Eastern food and camel meat was Ayal Al-Fareej. It is a family restaurant with origins from Kuwait. the restaurant also has private seating so women can eat with their families and take off their head scarfs.

The Hills North of Salalah

I spent my last day in Salalah exploring the Northern Hills of Dhofar, just above Salalah’s wild shoreline. As I drove above the city, a drastically different geography and terrain emerged. The tropical coastline transformed into arid, Mars-like rolling hills. Along the way, I passed herds of wild donkeys, camels, and bulls roaming freely across the rugged terrain. Adorning the clay colored hills are unique species of frankincense, baobab, and acacia trees only found in Dhofar.

Tomb of Job | One of the Bibles Oldest Prophets

Hidden away on an elevated and forested plateau is the tomb of Job (Ayyub), one of the Bible’s oldest prophets. Highly revered in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam for his obedience to God, I was the only visitor that morning to the simple shrine marked by a small green dome. Several prayer mats and an Arabic tapestry mark the resting place of Prophet Job. It was a moment of peaceful reflection and gratitude for my trip to Oman.

Salalah guide Itinerary

Below is everything I did when exploring Salalah. I’ve added everything I did in my two days in Salalah along with what you can do if you have an additional day.

I was originally planning to stay in Salalah for three days, but I was invited to watch a traditional bull fight on the fourth day of Eid Al-Fitr in the village of Liwa close to the UAE border. There is no place in Greece quite like Agios Minas Beach.

The island of Karpathos has some of the best beaches in all of Greece. My time spent reading, writing, and swimming in the warm waters  of the Mediterranean Sea are some of my most cherished memories of otherworldly Karpathos.

Hidden away in a remote cove is Agios Minas Beach. Identified only by a withered road sign, the barren road to Agios Minas Beach is easily missable. Agios Minas Beach was my favorite beach on Karpathos, but getting to the beach was quite the adventure. If you make the journey, you will be gifted with one of the best beaches in Greece, possibly all to yourself.

Getting to Agios Minas Beach

Driving to Agios Minas

Agios Minas Beach is in the North of Karpathos. Most people who visit Karpathos stay in the south of the island near the main town of Pigadia. To get from the areas around Pigadia to Agios Minas beach, follow the road taking you North towards the village of Olympos. The village of Olympos is the most fascinating village on Karpathos. It has remained unchanged for centuries. Additionally, it’s only a 30 minute drive to Agios Minas Beach making it easy to visit both in a day.

As you drive up the highway, you will see road signs directing you to Olympos, so you know you will be going in the right direction. Additionally, download offline Google Maps for the island of Karpathos and put in Agios Minas Beach to make sure you are going in the right direction. As you drive, you will see some of the most breathtaking views of your life. The road has stunning views of the vast Aegean Sea below and passes through a dense mountain pine reserve. It is unlike any terrain I have experienced elsewhere in Greece, a true Mediterranean paradise.

It will be hard to keep your eyes on the road as you admire the unforgettable views of the sea, the pines and the breathtaking jagged mountains.

As you continue North, you will begin to see Agios Minas Beach start to appear on the road signs before Olympos. There will eventually be a right arrow off the main highway leading to the small barren path down to Agios Minas beach.

The Rugged Road Down to Agios Minas Beach

To be fully transparent, the road down to Agios Minas is wild. The road is unpaved, steep, and has many curves. It is more appropriate to describe the 3 kilometer (1.8 mile) gravel stretch as a dirt path rather than a road. The road is not wide enough for two cars to pass, so I was praying that I did not meet another car coming from the opposite direction. Driving out of Agios Minas beach will be harder as it is uphill.

Evaluate Your Rental Car

I highly suggest evaluating the state of your rental car before driving down to Agios Minas Beach. I was able to make the drive down to the beach in a small Nissan sedan, but it was a challenge (especially leaving). Honestly, renting a 4×4 would be best in visiting this beach and exploring other off road destinations in Karpathos.

Make Sure You Have a Full Tank of Gas

Fill up your car with gas before visiting Agios Minas beach. As I began my drive into the beach, I realized I only had a quarter tank of gasoline left. This made the drive down especially stressful as I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to make it out of the beach and back to Pigadia. The tavern owners reassured me that I had enough gas to circle the island twice, but I still recommend visiting this beach on a full tank to reduce any additional concerns. They were incredibly friendly people and were very interested on my decision to solo-travel Karpathos and the Greek islands as a Greek American,

Once you have driven the worst of the gravel road, you will be greeted by the friendly sight of an olive groove and two Greek taverns. There is also a tiny hill with a chapel on top that offers an incredible view, which I think is a good place to start.

Getting to Agios Minas Beach by Boat

It’s also possible to get to Agios Minas Beach by boat. This may be a good option for those who don’t want the stress of the drive but still want to experience the beauty and serenity of the remarkable beach. There are regular cruises and private boat tours that take you to Agios Minas directly from Pigadia and Diafani. The cost can vary greatly depending on the time of year, but prices usually run from €900 to €1,200. Keep in mind this is for a full day of exploring, with boats usually leaving at 8:00 a.m. and retuning to port at 5:00 p.m. or later.

Chapel of Agios Minas

Agios Minas beach is named for the chapel on the hilltop overlooking the cove dedicated to St Minas. Born in Egypt in 285 AD, St Minas is an important saint in the Greek Orthodox church who served in the Roman army and was martyred for practicing Christianity.  Services are held on the saints feast day.

The chapel inside is humble but a peaceful place to light a candle. There are also traditional Karpathian embroideries covering the icons, further showcasing local island culture.

Outside the chapel is an incredible view of the beach cove of Agios Minas beach. Make sure to take many pictures of the stunning view below!

The Beach

Agios Minas Beach is hands down my favorite beach in Karpathos. One of the nicest things about my trip to Agios Minas Beach is that I had it almost entirely to myself. There were four other travelers at the beach besides the tavern owners.

Agios Minas is a black sand, pebble beach. It has good waves that aren’t too powerful. Because of this, it’s the perfect palace for swimming. With the chapel on the hill, the rugged mountainous surroundings, and the olive groove behind, Agios Minas feels like a hidden Greek oasis. I spent several hours reading, writing, swimming, and relaxing under an umbrella as I watched the waves hitting the shoreline.

You can rent a comfortable beach lounge with an umbrella from the tavern owners or bring a towel and enjoy the beach. The beach lounge was actually quite comfortable so I would suggest renting a chair. It cost around 15-20 euros but I thought it was worth it.

I would recommend spending  a couple of hours at the beach.

The Taverns

After a full day of swimming and sunbathing at Agios Minas, I was very hungry. Luckily for me, there are two Taverns a step away from the shoreline. I ate at Taverna Sotiris. The fresh calamari was especially good. It was the most perfect and authentic Greek food. I am sure the other tavern right across from Taverna Sotiris is just as good. After all, you can’t go wrong with a traditional home cooked Greek meal.

The Valley of the Temples is a magical place.

Perched on a set of hills overlooking the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, is a sanctuary of history and cultural heritage that plays with the imagination. Here, in the Southern corner of Sicily, lies one of the most mesmerizing collection of ancient Greek temples found anywhere in the world.

Ancient Greek settlers inhabited the coasts of Spain, Southern Italy, and Sicily as part of their manifest destiny of establishing Magna Graecia, or greater Greece. Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples quickly became one of the most prominent sea colonies in Magna Graecia.

Although the Greeks are long gone from Sicily, the testament of their architecture and ambition remain. The timeless orange and amber temples stretching among hundred-year old olive trees, native plants, and cacti attest to the Greek Golden age on Sicily. Many equate these temples in importance and grandeur to the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens.

My guide contains everything you need to know before visiting the Valley of the Temples. I’ve also included personal tips and insight for making the most of your time exploring these storied hills. I hope you come to cherish the Valley of the Temples as much as I did.

History of Valley of the Temples – It’s All Greek to Everyone

As a half Greek American, I was amazed at the presence of Greek Temples along the coast of Southern Sicily. Surprisingly, this area was part of the region in the Mediterranean Sea called Magna Graecia (Greater Greece) and included Sicily and the south of the Italian Peninsula.

Akragas, modern Agrigento, quickly emerged as one of the most powerful and prosperous colonies in the ancient Greek speaking world. The lush and serene port city was renowned for its art, culture, and majestic temples dedicated to the Greek gods.

Greek Temples with a Sicilian Flare

The Greek settlers used all of their techniques and styles from the mainland to decorate and adorn their new home. But unlike the imposing Parthenon of the Acropolis in Athens which was made of marble, the Valley of the Temples were built out of local sandstone called calcarenite. The gold-orangish color among the dense Mediterranean plants and olive trees give these soaring temples a distinctive feel from what the Greeks had built before. Using material that was indigenous to the area complemented the surrounding landscape. Indeed, the most magical time to be at Valley of the Temples is at sunset and sunrise, when the Mediterranean light casts the temples into different shades of orange and amber. Additionally, it’s when the temples have the fewest tourists.

Eventually Agrigento was conquered by the Carthaginians and then the Romans. All of the temples were renamed with the Roman god’s new and flashy Latin titles. The port city and the temples gradually diminished in importance. Many of the temples became churches with the rise of Christianity and Byzantine rule on Sicily. Because of this, many ruins were preserved and protected from complete abandonment (most notably Temple Concordia).

Interest in the Valley of the Temples increased during the Renaissance, when classical buildings and styles became important again in Italy. Moreover, efforts in the modern age resulted in the Valley of the Temples becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

How long do you need at Valley of the Temples

How much time you dedicate to exploring the Valley of the Temples depends on the objectives of your trip to Sicily. Most people can see the entire archeological site and all the temples in 2-3 hours.

However, I personally recommend spending at least 2 full days exploring the Valley of the Temples and the surrounding area. This will allow you time to go at sunrise when the sun casts early morning colors on the temple and at sunset. In the afternoon, as the sun starts to disappear over the Mediterranean Sea, the ruins become illuminated by soft orange lights. Personally, visiting the Valley of the Temples was one of my highlights of my trip to Sicily. I thought it was worth it to spend more time here on my trip. You can also go to some of the nearby beaches which are some of the best in Sicily.

Spending two days at the Valley of the Temples will also alow you ample time to visit the Scala Dei Turchi, which I discuss at the end of this blog.

Is it possible to do a day trip to the Valley of the Temples

Yes, it’s possible to take a day trip to the Valley of the Temples. Most people need 2-3 hours to see the highlights, leaving plenty of time to see the site.

If you are planning to do a day trip, I recommend leaving early. This will help to maximize your time exploring the ancient ruins and temples.

While a day trip to the Valley of the Temples is possible on paper, it may feel overwhelming. Furthermore, you may feel like the majority of your day is being spent getting to and from Agrigento and not actually exploring the temples.

Valley of the Temples Opening Times

The valley of the Temples is open daily from 8:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. There are extended evening hours during summer.

Getting to Valley of the Temples

There are several ways to get to the Valley of the Temples.

Car

The easiest and fastest way to get to the Valley of the Temple is by car. I rented a car on my weeklong road trip to Sicily. Renting a car in Sicily gave me the flexibility to explore and venture off the beaten path. I recommend renting a car so you can explore the surrounding area or visit one of the phenomenal golden beaches nearby.

It takes 2 hours to get to the Valley of the Temples from Palermo and 3 hours from Catania. Also, there are free and paid parking options available.

Buses

There are public busses that run from Palermo and Catania to Agrigento. You can see schedules and pre purchase your tickets below.

• Palermo Bus providers include SAIS Autolinee and Autoservizi Cuffaro
• Catania Bus providers include SAIS Autolinee, FlixBus, and Itabus

Trains

Another option is to take the train to Agrigento. You can check the train schedules here.

• Palermo to Agrigento: The ride is usually around 2 hours. There are around 20 train departures to Agrigento per day.
• Catania to Agrigento: It usually takes 5-7 hours to get to Agrigento from Catania by train.

Getting Around Valley of the Temples  

Car

Having a rental car was very beneficial to get around Valley of the Temples and to visit nearby beaches like Scala Dei Turchi.

Walking

If you are staying in Agrigento town, it’s a 30-45 minute walk to the Valley of the Temples entrances. It can be a scenic route to see the temples, rolling hills, and old town. However, it involves an incline on the way back. Keep in mind, this walk can be quite extreme during the hot Sicilian summers.

Taxi / Rideshares

Rideshares, like Uber, are available in Agreigento along with regular taxis.

Hotel Villa Athena

Staying at the hotel Villa Athena was a more luxurious and immersive way to experience the Valley of the Temples. Original built as an 18th century private villa, Hotel Villa Athena is now the premiere accommodation for travelers looking to get the full experience in the Valley of the Temples.

Patio Garden and Direct Temple Views

The moment I arrived, someone immediately greeted me and parked my car for me. Afterwards, A hotel staff member proceeded to give me a tour of the pristine hotel grounds which includes a pool with direct temple views, a private herb garden where fresh ingredients are used for all the meals, and an outside patio with upfront views of the ruins. The patio garden was the perfect place to truly disconnect under an oversized umbrella surrounded by mature olive and citrus trees under the gaze of the withered orange temples. Enjoying savory margarita pizzas and sweets towers during breakfast while admiring the temples was a truly once in a lifetime experience.

There are two restaurants on the property Federico is an outside patio restaurant and cocktail bar while Terrazza Degli Dei offers Sicilian specialities in a more formal setting. There are also frequent communal dinners in the private garden where guests at the property can meet one another over a home cooked meal. Also, there is a fully functioning spa at the villa.

Sicilian Luxury at the Valley of the Temples

The Hotel Villa Athena is a 5 stay luxury property and is everything you would expect of a boutique Italian hotel. No detail was spared and the feeling of leisure enjoying direct views of the temples was the true definition of luxury. The hotel staff also displayed a level of professionalism and attention to detail and went out of their way to make sure I was having a great stay.

Although rooms can be pricey, staying at the Hotel Villa Athena definitely elevated my experience at the Valley of the Temples. Not only was I able to visit the archaeological site multiple times, but I was able to admire the temples by gazing at the ruins during meals and while enjoying drinks by the pool. The screwdrivers were my favorite while contemplating the beauty of Temple Concordia.

Private Temple Access

Another perk of staying at the Hotel Villa Athena is that the hotel offers a private entrance to the Valley of the Temples. While regular visitors enter through the main points at either the East or West entrance of the archaeological park, hotel guests have an exclusive entry point through an ancient olive grove.

Room Prices

The Hotel Villa Athena is on the pricier end of accommodations in Agrigento. Rooms can range from $300-$1,000 depending on the time of year and type of room you book. The earlier you make your reservation the better prices will be.

Although my room didn’t have a full view of the temples, I was able to see part of Temple Concordia from my patio balcony. Rooms without direct temple views are much more affordable, and since you can see the Valley of the Temples from anywhere in the villa, it seemed like a fair sacrifice.

Tickets for the Valley of the Temples

Entry tickets cost between €10–€12 for adults depending on the time of year. Children can visit the Valley of the Temples for free and EU adults ages 18-25 can visit for €5–€7.

Additionally, admission is free the first Sunday of the month for all visitors. Understandably, the archaeological site is usually much busier this day.

I recommend getting the ticket that also has access to the museums and Kolymbethra Gardens, which cost between €15–€20.

Eastern Vs. Western Zones

The Valley of the Temples is generally split between a Western and Eastern zone to make navigating in the 3,200 acre archaeological park easier.

Eastern Zone

Temple Concordia

The Temple Concordia is one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world. Showcasing the iconic Doric style, the Temple Concordia is definitely the most beautiful of the temples.

Also look out for the winged Fallen Statue of Icarus in front of the temple.

Temple of Hera

Just above Temple Concordia is the Temple Hera. Situated on a hilltop, the Temple of Hera overlooks the entire Valley of the Temples, the dense olive groves, and the expansive Mediterranean Sea below. Furthermore, many of the columns show signs of burning, likely from animal sacrifices. The Temple of Hera remains remarkably well preserved.

Temple of Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux)

All that remains of the Temple Dioscuri is a corner of the original foundations. It has become a symbol of Agrigento.

Roman and Byzantine Necropolis

The Roman Necropolis is located between the Temples of Concordia and Hera. It is filled with olive trees and has burial holes that were built into an ancient cistern.

Olive Groves

Directly adjacent to Temple Concordia, across the main road that runs through the Valley of the Temples is an olive grove. There are several paths you can wander and see centuries old olive trees, native plants, and cacti. You may also see some indigenous goats that have long-spiral horns roaming about.

Cafe

Caffetteria Degli Arcosoli is a local cafe within the park. It sells gelato, sandwiches, and Sicilian specialties.

I ordered a double espresso over ice and the employees laughed at me. They were actually very nice and playful about it, but iced coffee is still not super common in Italy.

Western Zone

Temple of Zeus

The Temple of Zeus was the largest of the temples built in Agrigento. It is remarkable to see how the temple has been weathered by time and just how large in scale it would have been.

Temple of Hercules

People say the Temple of Hercules was the first temple built in the valley. Dedicated to the son of Zeus, the Temple of Hercules still has several original Doric columns standing.

Eastern Or Western Entrance – Which is Better

While there are pros and cons of using the Eastern and Western entrances, I believe the Eastern entrance is the best choice for most travelers.

The Eastern Entrance is closest to the best preserved temples of Concordia and Hera and is a downhill walk. If you arrive early enough, you will get to photograph the temples with their higher views with significantly fewer crowds.

The Western Entrance is an uphill walk and takes more time to get to the center of the archaeological park.

Shuttles

You can also use the shuttle which costs between €3–€5 to get from the Eastern to the Western zones of the Valley of the Temples. This way you don’t have to walk back uphill once you have finished exploring the park at the Western zone.

Practical Tips

Below are a couple more tips before you explore the Valley of the Temples

• Visit Early: The early mornings and late afternoons have cooler weather and fewer crowds. It also has the best light for pictures.
• Take the Heat Seriously: Sicily can get brutal in the Summer. Remember to wear airy clothes, take breaks in the shade, and drink lots of water. Also remember to wear sunscreen.
• Wear Comfortable Shoes: A day in the Valley of the Temples is a lot of walking. Make sure to wear shoes you will be comfortable in for a few hours
• Buy tickets in Advance: This will save time waiting in line just to enter.
• Be a Respectful Traveler: The UNESCO-protected archaeological park lacks proper fencing in many areas. Stay on the proper paths and don’t climb or alter the ruins.

Scala Dei Turchi – Stairs of the Turks

The Scala Dei Turchi (also known as the Stairs of the Turks) is a limestone cliff formation that projects into the Mediterranean Sea and resembles a large staircase. As one of the island’s top geographic landmarks, it stands out for its various layers of smooth white limestone shaped by the wind and waves. The weathered cliff gracefully meets the sea.

I recommend visiting in the early morning or late afternoon to beat the worst of the crowds. It takes around 20 minutes by car to get to the Stairs of the Turks from the Valley of the Temples.

Venice is one of the most mesmerizing and unique places in Italy and the world. This legendary and historic city on the water once dominated the Mediterranean Sea. Today, it is a must see destination for travelers from all walks of life. Its canals, serving as arteries, keeping the storied city alive in the 21st century. It’s survival attests to the ingenuity and ambitious aspirations of the city’s founders, leaders, and artists who built and adorned this legendary metropolis known as the “Queen of the Adriatic”. Taking a day trip to Venice from Rome was one of my favorite adventures in Italy.

Although it’s possible to spend several days or weeks exploring this city’s many neighborhoods  and surrounding islands, many people only have a day to visit Venice as part of a broader Italian or European itinerary. My blog includes a comprehensive guide to planning a seamless and unforgettable day trip to Venice from Rome. I have included practical tips, advice, and lessons learned from my day trip to Venice that I hope make your visit to the floating city smooth, memorable, and enjoyable.

Is it possible to do a day trip to Venice from Rome

There is a lot of conversation and confusion on the internet and social media amongst travelers about whether it’s even possible to do a day trip to Venice from Rome. During my first trip to Italy, while staying in Rome, I nearly chose to skip Venice because so many people claimed it would be too rushed or even impossible. I’m here to tell you that it’s totally possible to visit Venice on a day trip from Rome. If you organize your day effectively, you will be able to visit the most important sites of Venice and have plenty of time to explore and stumble across unique places at a relaxed pace.

Day Trip to Venice Fee

The city of Venice has implemented a new fee for travelers visiting Venice for less than 24 hours. The tax for day trip visitors is 5 Euros.

Currently, Venice is running a trial on certain days to see how effective the 5 Euro day pass is. If you plan to visit during one of the trial days, you will have to pay the day trip fee. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during peak season are expected to be included in the 2025 calendar as days requiring the day trip pass.

If the day you are planning to visit Venice requires the 5 Euro day fee, you can purchase your day pass here. You simply select the day you are visiting, pay the fee, and receive a QR code. Authorities have fined tourists up to 300 Euros for failing to obtain the proper day trip pass. The day trip fee is a relatively new approach to curbing the city’s struggle with overtourism. It was not in effect during my first solo-trip to Italy.

In my opinion, a 5 Euro day fee for a day trip to Venice from Rome is well worth it. Hopefully, the small fee will assist the city in preserving and maintaining the city for years to come.

Is it worth it to do a day trip to Venice from Rome

If you are in Italy for a short trip and only have one day to see Venice, I think it’s totally worth it. Venice is one of the most enchanting places you can visit in Italy. A day in the city gives you more than enough time to visit the most significant landmarks, explore the storied neighborhoods and impressive canals, and experience the timeless charm of the city built on the waters of the Adriatic.

Whether you are traveling with a significant other, a group of friends, or traveling solo, Venice will not disappoint. Venice is a great city for romantics and history lovers alike; the tiny city state controlled ports, islands, and vast territories across the Mediterranean.

Just visiting this magical city for a day will instill a sense of wonder and imagination that such a place can exist. I thought it was well worth the effort and planning to do my day trip to Venice from Rome.

How to get to Venice from Rome

There are many ways to get to Venice from Rome. The best and most enjoyable way to get to Venice from the Eternal City is by high speed train. Italy has a fantastic network of bullet trains that can take you all over the country. I highly recommend paying the small fee to upgrade to the business class cabin, which has leather seats and extra leg room and just overall feels much more luxurious.

To arrive in Venice by train, you will need to depart from the train station in Rome, called the Roma Termini station. The Roma Termini station isn’t in the best part of Rome. Watch your belongings outside the train station. Inside feels safer and more secure once you pass through security.

Train Schedule

One of my top tips for planning a day trip to Venice from Rome is to take one of the earliest trains. The earliest train departs Roma Termini most days around 5:30 am (with arrival in Venice at 9:30).  I highly recommend catching this train if you can. It’s an early start, but if you can make this train you will have the entire day to explore the city. The last trains leaving Venice usually depart around 11:00 pm. I recommend departing Venice no later than 6:00-7:30 pm or else you will be arriving well after midnight in Rome.  The Italian trains are scheduled on the 24 hour system.

It takes around 4 hours to get to Venice from Rome by train. I enjoyed the train ride by eating an Italian breakfast served in the train café, reading my book, and admiring the expansive green countryside and charming towns. Most trains also have seat chargers and free wifi.

I definitely recommend booking your tickets as soon as possible. The earlier you book your train ticket, the cheaper it will be. Since I bought my tickets quite late, they were much more expensive. I purchased my tickets online, and Google gave me all the available options.

Downloading Offline Google Maps

As I have mentioned previously on other blogs, offline Google Maps is one of my favorite resources as a solo traveler since I often have limited access to wifi or cellular data plans internationally. I was able to navigate Venice entirely by using Offline Google Maps. Just remember to include all the sights you wish to see in advance or simply download the map I’ve included in my blog before your day trip to Venice from Rome.

Day trip to Venice from Rome Itinerary

Arrival in Venice

After a short passage through an underground  tunnel, the train came out along the tracks over the water, graced by two statues of winged lions, symbols of Venice. Seeing Venice for the first time was an unforgettable experience. It felt like something out of a novel or a movie. The waters of the Adriatic Sea surround the entire city like a garland. The train station in the historic part of the city, Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia, serves as the main arrival point (ensure you select this station when purchasing your tickets). As you exit the station, the bustling Grand Canal greets you, offering an amazing first glimpse of the city.

Getting to St. Mark’s Square

One of the top places you should visit on your day trip to Venice from Rome is St. Mark’s square. This is the historic, cultural, and social heart of Venice. There are multiple ways to get to St Mark’s Square from the Santa Lucia train station. You can take the vaporetto, or water bus which sells tickets right outside the train station. Additionally, you can also rent a private water taxi or a gondola to take you to St. Mark’s Square.

In my opinion, the best way to get to St. Mark’s square is by walking. Along the walk to St. Mark’s Square, I found countless charming streets and bridges with views of the canals. My walk took about 45 minutes as I explored canal-lined streets, beautiful churches, and eclectic shops. After four hours on the train, it felt great to stretch and explore while getting plenty of steps.

St Mark’s Square

After navigating through the countless alleys and turns leading to the city’s most important meeting point, I descended on the grand St Mark’s Square. The ornate and imposing exterior of St. Mark’s Basilica and the towering campanile, or bell tower, immediately greeted me.

St Mark’s Square is the most important gathering place in Venice for both locals and visitors alike. There are many Italian restaurants and shops lining the columned square. You can see the Adriatic Sea crashing against the foundations of the square. Nearby gondolas gently sway in the waves waiting for riders. Although it is undeniably a touristy area, it has a nice feel to it.

You can climb the campanile in St Mark’s Square. Tickets can be purchased at the base of the tower or online in advance. I did not climb the tower, but I’ve heard the views of the city at the top are breathtaking. St Mark’s campanile is the tallest point in Venice.

Practical Tips

NOTE: If you visit St Mark’s Square in the winter, it can be flooded by sea waters. St Mark’s Square is one of the lowest points in the city. Wooden catwalks are put up to get around the square and prevent people from getting their feet wet. When I visited in late October, the water was pretty low but the catwalks were still out. I have seen images where the waters are at peoples knee levels.

Alternatively, if you visit Venice in summer, crowds can surge. The city may feel more overwhelming, especially at St Mark’s Square.

Venice, like many highly desirable travel destinations, is battling with the growing problem of over tourism. The city is struggling to maintain it’s unique cultural identity and quality of life for the local population.

St Mark’s Basilica

History

St Mark’s Basilica is a beautiful and complicated building with a fascinating history. The cathedral took inspiration from many of the famous churches of Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey) thanks to its trade interaction and sometimes volatile relationship with the Byzantine Empire. The church contains many precious objects that the Venetians took from Constantinople during the 4th Crusade, including statues, icons, liturgical articles, and a magnificent gold altarpiece displayed in the center. The most famous loot taken from Constantinople were 4 bronze horses proudly welcoming visitors over the main entrance of the church. These 4 stallions once stood in the ancient Hippodrome of Constantinople, where chariot racing and other imperial sports took place in the ancient Roman and Byzantine empires. The 4 horses you see today on the exterior of the basilica are replicas with the original bronze horses in the museum in the attic and roof of the basilica.

The interior of St. Mark’s Basilica features incredibly intricate and ornate designs. Artists covered the cathedral from floor to ceiling in golden, glistening Byzantine mosaics depicting the life of Christ, the saints, and the most important political and spiritual moments in Venice’s history. The basilica interior reflects Venice interactions with other countries and cultures, along with its storied wealth from its maritime commercial dominance. The mosaics and ambiance differ from other Italian cathedrals, highlighting Venice’s connection to the East. Visit the church museum for a few euros to see the origional four bronze horses. The museum’s balcony offers views of St. Mark’s Square, the campanile, and the sea.

Important Tips for Visiting St Mark’s Basilica

One of the biggest mistakes I made on my day trip to Venice from Rome  was not purchasing a ticket to St Mark’s Basilica in advance. The cues to enter St Mark’s are long, even during quieter times of the year. If you purchase a skip the line ticket, you will save a lot of time waiting in line to enter. If you forget to purchase a ticket in advance, the line does go relatively quickly though (I waited for 30-45 minutes in late October). I imagine the line in summer could be hours to enter the basilica

It is also important to note that the church has a strict backpack policy. I have read that many travelers have had difficulty bringing backpacks and bags into the church. If you have a larger backpack or bag, you may have to check it at the coat room to the left of the basilica where they will store and secure your bag.

Remember to dress modestly when visiting the basilica or you may be denied entry. Men and Women should both cover their knees and women should cover their shoulders when visiting St. Marks Basilica.

Doge’s Palace Venice

The Doge’s palace is another of the top places I visited on my day trip to Venice from Rome. This is where the Doge of Venice, the city’s ruler, lived and governed the city state and its vast ports and colonies throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The architecture of this building is distinctly Venetian, and the palace is specially designed to adapt the structure from the physical confines and limitations Venice’s geography imposes. On the staircase leading into the palace is a depiction of Atlas holding up the globe, a unique tribute to Venice and its ambition to discover, control, and conquer different territories it came across.

Throughout the palace, artists painted beautiful frescoes portraying life in the city and famous war scenes. Leaders made important decisions that shaped Europe within the many lavish halls of the palace. When visiting the Doge’s Palace, you can also cross the Bridge of Sighs. This is where convicts would get their last glance of freedom before facing long imprisonment or execution. The Bridge of Sighs is one of the most iconic bridges in all of Venice.

I would suggest booking your tickets in advance so you can skip the line. I also purchase an audio guide after security to learn about the significance of each room in the palace. After you pass security, you will have to check your bag once inside the palace courtyard in the cloak closet.

Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge is one of the top bridges to cross over in the city. The bridge divides the districts of San Marco and San Polo in Venice. There are three sets of stairs on the bridge and there are many unique shops. It is also the  oldest and most important bridge in Venice. Completed in the late 16th century, it was the only way to cross the Grand Canal for 300 years. The stone crossing gradually became a hub for commercial activity between San Marco and San Polo.

There are jewelry and local artisan stores on the bridge, and a cool antique shop that sells many old items from across the world.

Other Sights to Visit

St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and the Rialto Bridge are three of the most important cultural and historically significant places to visit in Venice.  The below list are other sights that I visited during my day trip to Venice from Rome. I recommend doing your research to plan accordingly and prioritize places that are of the most interest to you.

Santa Maria di Nazareth Church

Located in the Venetian district of Cannaregio, this small but ornate church is a one minute walk from the train station along the grand canal. The church of Santa Maria di Nazareth is a masterpiece of the late Venetian Baroque period and serves as a church for the Carmelite order in Catholicism. The church is very elaborate, and the altar is especially beautiful. Because of its close proximity to the train station, this is a great first stop on the itinerary.

Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari

The church of Santa Maria Gloriosa is one of the most important churches in Venice. Although the red brick exterior is quite simple, the majestic interior more than makes up for the humble facade. The church took nearly one hundred years to build and has the second tallest bell tower in the city. Inside the church has several incredible works of art including the Renaissance masterpiece the Assumption of the Virgin by Titian.

Venetian Arsenal

The Venetian Arsenal was critical in maintaining the cities extensive navy and was the largest industrial scale operation before the industrial revolution. The Venetian Arsenal mass-produced galleys and other ships on an assembly-line process, restoring and creating naval vessels for the purpose of trade and conquest. The former military complex is closed to the public, however you can still admire the grand entrance guarded by two medieval towers and winged lions. It’s still visible to see the large area where the ships were built.

San George Dei Greci

The St George church is the place of worship and center of community life for the sizable Greek population in Venice. Granted the right to build a church in 1539, the church was built by Greek soldiers serving in the Venetian military and Greek intellectuals. Many of the first 16th Greek immigrants arrived fleeing the collapse of the Byzantine Empire. It is also the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Italy. The church has traditional Orthodox icons with a noticeable Italian influence. There’s also a Byzantine icon museum on the church grounds. St George church is easily recognizable by it’s leaning bell-tower.

Bridge of Sighs

You can admire the little but significant bridge of sighs from a bridge just to the right of St Mark’s square. 

Waterfront Views of Venice

If you continue walking past the bridge of sighs along the waterways, you will get some incredible views of the city and its most cherished landmarks. This is a great moment to take some pictures and remind yourself that you are in Venice, Italy. For the best views, walk along the waterfront until you reach the park called Giardini Della Marinaressa.

Campo di Ghetto Nuovo- the Jewish Quarter

Venice housed a thriving Jewish population, with refugees from around the  world. The Jewish Quarter includes a museum  highlighting the Jewish culture in Venice, 5 synagogues, and many kosher restaurants and bakeries. Buildings here are taller, housing families and communities who wanted to live in close proximity to each other.

Food in Venice

The food in Venice is very delicious and high quality. You will not struggle to find a good meal here. The city has great Italian food, but also remarkable seafood dishes, not found elsewhere in Italy. There are many charming bistros, restaurants, pizzarias, and bakeries that are very welcoming and cozy. There are also nice bars and gelaterias to enjoy some ice cream with views of the city

If your itinerary only permits one day to visit Venice,  a day trip from Rome is both possible and worthwhile. If you leave early and plan carefully, you will get a full day to explore the city’s most important highlights and get a strong feel for the unique surroundings of Venice at an enjoyable pace. Just remember to alot sufficient time to make your way back to the Santa Lucia train station. Although the day will be packed, you will have time to sufficiently experience Venice and create many new memories in this unforgettable city.

I visited the Akrotiri Peninsula on a day trip from Chania Town as part of my 10-day road trip throughout Crete. I’ve included the most important places to visit on the peninsula so you can make the most of your time exploring this fascinating corner of Crete

Is the Akrotiri Peninsula Worth Visiting

The Akrotiri Peninsula is one of the most extraordinary places in Crete’s Chania Region. I definitely attained a deeper understanding of Crete’s past by exploring the peninsula. The Akrotiri Peninsula features breathtaking gorges, caves, and hikes that offer mesmerizing views of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a place rooted in the natural elements. 

Due to the mesmerizing yet rugged terrain, the Akrotiri Peninsula was home to many early Christian hermits. The monks sought prayer and contemplation in the naturally protected landscapes of the peninsula. As Christianity spread throughout the island, many prominent monasteries emerged. Several on the peninsula would become renowned and some of the most famous in Greece. The Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) and the Gouverneto monasteries remain well-preserved and are still active. 

There are also several iconic beaches in the area. Additionally, the Akrotiri Peninsula contains the Venizelos Graves. This is one of the most important places in the history of Crete and modern Greece. The ancient ruins of Aptera are fascinating to explore and are a short car ride away from the peninsula.

Even if you have a short stay on Crete, I would allot one full day to explore all the Akrotiri Peninsula has to offer.

History of the Akrotiri Peninsula

The cultural significance of the Akrotiri Peninsula stretches back to the ancient Minoan civilization. This is when the Minoans first established temples and shrines in the many secluded valleys and gorges of the peninsula.

The arrival of Christianity on Crete made the rocky Akrotiri Peninsula a refuge for monks seeking prayer and freedom to practice their religion. However, it wasn’t until Byzantine rule that the Akrotiri Peninsula evolved into a center of monasticism and Orthodox Christian spirituality. In fact, many monasteries became important both for spiritual means along with their economic capabilities. Most notable is the production of olive oil and wine by the monks of the peninsula.

During the Venetian and Ottoman control of Crete, the Akrotiri Peninsula remained strategically important due to its close proximity to Chania Town. Like in earlier times, Cretan rebels sought refuge in the rough and remote conditions of the peninsula. It was the perfect place to nourish the wild Cretan identity and organize plans for a deliverance of foreign occupation.

In recent times, the Akrotiri Peninsula played an important role in the Cretan struggle for independence and unification with broader Greece. Today, the cultural, spiritual, and natural wonders of the Akrotiri Peninsula make it one of the most special places to connect with Crete’s history and beauty.

How to get to the Akrotiri Peninsula

If you arrive in Chania by air, you will land at the Chania International Airport which is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula. There are many rental car options at the airport.

It’s around a 30-minute drive to get from the center of Chania Town to the Akrotiri Peninsula. All of the roads were in excellent condition. There are also buses running from Chania to the peninsula.

Tips for visiting

There are several things to keep in mind while planning your visit to the Akrotiri Peninsula. Firstly, remember to pack for your day. I spent the majority of my day outside hiking, visiting the archaeological sites, and soaking up the sun at the pristine beaches. Because of this, I packed lots of water and snacks to keep me going throughout my day.

Remember to dress appropriately when visiting the monasteries. It’s customary to have the knees and shoulders covered when entering. I brought a pair of sweatpants that I could easily take off afterward. Bring close-toe shoes for the hikes and walks in the ancient ruins and olive groves. Also, don’t forget a bathing suit and towel for the Seitan Limania and Stavros beaches.

When to visit the Akrotiri Peninsula

As Europe’s southernmost frontier, Crete gets sweltering summers. However, late May through early June and September boasts pleasant weather and warm seas. You’ll also be able to visit the most remarkable places on the peninsula with significantly lighter crowds.

When I visited the Akrotiri Peninsula I started my day early. This allowed me to enjoy the most important monasteries and sites before many of the tour buses arrived.

Monasteries – A Place of Worship not a Tourist Attraction

Unfortunately, the monasteries of the Akrotiri Peninsula among other famous places of worship on Crete allow tour buses. The influx of tour buses disrupts the energy and feel of the island’s monasteries, many of which are celebrated for their spiritual significance on Crete and the entire Greek Orthodox Church. Additionally, it seems like the tour companies do not emphasize the appropriate behavior for the groups visiting the monasteries. Luckily, I was able to fully experience the monasteries both as a traveler and as an Orthodox Christian pilgrim before 3 large tour buses arrived at the gates.

Where to stay

I visited the Akrotiri Peninsula on a day trip from Chania Town. It’s only a 30-minute drive from the center of the Old Port of Chania. The roads on the peninsula were in excellent condition. Furthermore, the peninsula is heavily militarized with a NATO and American naval base, so the security in the area is remarkable.

How long will you need

A full day gave me plenty of time to explore all the noteworthy sites of the Akrotiri Peninsula and the nearby archaeological site of Aptera.

What to See on the Akrotiri Peninsula

Venizelos Graves

My first stop on my day trip to the Akrotiri Peninsula was the Venizelos Graves. 

This is one of the most significant places in the history of modern Crete. Sitting on a hilltop overlooking Chania Town, Venizelos Graves offers stunning views of the entire Old Port and dazzling views of the Mediterranean Sea. This is one of the best places to experience sunrise or sunset in Chania.

The Venizelos Graves is the final resting place of one of the most renowned prime ministers in all of Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos. Commonly known as the “maker of modern Greece”, Venizelos played a significant role in the liberation of Crete and the island’s unification with Greece. During his seven terms as prime minister, he brought many territories, including Macedonia, Epirus, and the Aegean islands back under Greek sovereignty. Celebrating the work of Venizelos, Greece named the Athens International Airport in his honor. The grounds also include the grave of his son, Sofoklis Venizelos, who served as prime minister of Greece from 1943 to 1952.

The grounds include a small chapel dedicated to the Prophet Elias and a place to light candles. Additionally, there is a bronze statue of Spyros Kagialedakis. A national hero in Greece, Kagialedakis used his body to uphold the Greek flag during the Cretan revolution of 1897.

Despite the scenic views and phenomenal sunsets you can experience at the Venizelos Graves, the sight carries huge national and patriotic significance not just to Cretans, but to all Greeks, something often overlooked by visitors.

The Holy Monasteries of Akrotiri Peninsula

Agia Triada

The Agia Triada Monastery was my favorite monastery I visited on Crete. The grandeur of the Agia Triada monastery was on full display on my drive into the grounds. Large cypress trees line the road and endless olive groves emerse the walled, tangerine-colored monastery. I ascended a steep, narrow set of stairs past the orange walls to the entrance adorned by a set of columns and an icon of the Holy Trinity. The monastery chapel is in the shape of a cross and has 5 orange domes.

Founded by two Venetian monks who converted from Catholicism to Orthodoxy, the monastery feels like an ornate jewel box and showcases the beautiful harmony between the Greek and Italian architectural influences. Inside, I found vividly painted Greek Orthodox icons, many of the saints and holidays I was well acquainted with. Some of the most beautiful icons are large murals of the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the assumption of the Virgin Mary.

I visited on Holy Saturday, the day before Orthodox Easter, and found bay leaves still scattered all over the floor from the earlier divine services. The iconostasis, the wall of icons between the sanctuary and the altar, has many religious images painted with the customary gold-leaf background. Moreover, a large chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome which represents the symmetry of the universe. I saw a monk enter and swing the enormous chandelier, which proceeded to spin around the room. This is done on important feast days of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Tips for Visiting Agia Triada Monastery

To get the best experience and pictures of the holy monastery, I suggest visiting early before the tour groups arrive.

After exiting the chapel of the Holy Trinity, I took a staircase up to the roof of the orange domes to view the monastery complex from up high. I wandered around the grounds past the many monk’s cells. The thing that stuck out to me the most about the Holy Trinity monastery is the remarkable architecture, so unique to Crete and its heritage.

The monastery also includes an icon shop and a small market outside the walls which sells olive oil products and wines produced by the monks. 

Gouverneto Monastery

A ten-minute drive from the Agia Triada Monastery is the Gouverneto Monastery. Known as the Lady of Angels, this walled monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary sits high above the sea and is one of the oldest on the Akrotiri Peninsula. This is a very active and growing monastic community. Visitors may not take photos, smoke, or wear inappropriate clothes while entering. The interior of the monastery includes a beautiful garden with many exotic plants and flowers. I also met several friendly cats who wanted to be petted and jumped on my lap.

When I entered the chapel, there was a divine liturgy taking place with many locals from the surrounding villages in attendance The monastery church has many vivid Byzantine icons that line the walls from the floor to the ceiling. I sat to enjoy the spiritual setting as the Greek monks chanted an eerie “Kyrie Eleison” or lord have mercy and clouds of incense filled the sanctuary.

Hike to the Abandoned Katholiko Monastery 

After exiting the Gouverneto Monastery, I continued on a dirt path past a makeshift gate to the entrance of the hike to the Katholiko Monastery. This is believed to be one of the first monasteries on the Akrotiri Peninsula and on Crete. The path down to the Katholiko monastery is well paved with cobblestone. The entire hike boasts jaw-dropping views of the Mediterranean Sea. Being surrounded by so much untouched natural beauty was very cleansing.

On the way to the ruins of the Katholiko monastery, I stopped at the Cave of the Bear. Right off the main path, locals named the cave for a large stone that resembles a tall bear.

The Katholiko Monastery was founded in the 11th century by St. John the Hermit, one of the fathers of Cretan monasticism. Located in the Avlaki Gorge, the monastery is now completely abandoned. The complex comprises a brick bridge, the old chambers of the Monks, and a church built into the cave.

It took me about an hour each way to walk to reach the ruins of the Katholiko Monastery. The walk down was spectacular. However, the walk-up was more challenging. Overall, this was one of my favorite hikes on Certe due to the remarkable scenery and the historical significance.

Beaches on the Akrotiri Peninsula

Despite the active monasteries and the NATO military bases, the Akrotiri Peninsula is also known for several of the most renowned beaches in Western Crete.

Seitan Limania

Tucked away between a steep gorge is the mesmerizing Seitan Limania. This unspoiled and naturally protected beach hides in a rocky cove and has dramatic landscapes and bright blue waters.

Beware, the hike down to Seitan Limania was quite treacherous. Only a makeshift string railing gave me anything to hold on to while hiking down to the beach. Once I made it down to the beach, the atmosphere was truly magical. I visited at sunset and there was only one other couple on the beach along with a family of mountain goats. It was one of my favorite beaches on the island.

Stavros Beach

Another popular Cretan beach on the Akrotiri Peninsula is Stavros Beach. The beach is popular for its quiet and peaceful surroundings and its mountain views. Located near the village of Stavros, this charming beach is shaped like a horse-shoe and has the backdrop of a large rocky hill. It is famous in Greek culture for the filming of the beach scenes of the movie Zorba the Greek.

Make a Visit to the Archaeological Site of Aptera

Only a 30-minute drive away from the Akrotiri Peninsula is the Archaeological site of Aptera. This is one of the most important ancient sites on Crete besides the Palace of Knossos. Aptera has many well-preserved ancient ruins. Old Greek walls, Roman houses, and a semi-circular amphitheater overlooking Crete’s majestic White Mountains reminded me just how old civilization on the island actually is. An expansive olive grove surrounds the ancient ruins, adding to Aptera’s mystery. I had lunch at the Cretan Corner in the modern village adjacent to the Archaeological site of Aptera. The food was very flavorful and it was one of my favorite Tavernas in Crete. Equally enjoyable is the view of the mountains which the restaurant overlooks.
